    New Solyndra Emails Surface

Seeking to ease a subpoena standoff with Congress, the White House on Friday turned over to House investigators 135 pages of new documents detailing presidential aides’ discussions about the Solyndra loan guarantee and offered to let lawmakers personally inspect other memos that detail more sensitive deliberations.

The new memos, obtained by The Daily Beast from a government source, mostly detail efforts by the White House to plan a political event at Solyndra with Vice President Joe Biden in summer 2009, when the Energy Department was announcing the $535 million loan to the now-bankrupt solar firm.

In one string of emails from August 2009, shortly before Biden’s appearance at the California company by video, White House environmental adviser Heather Zichal raised concerns “from the funding community” about the Energy Department’s plan to give the loan guarantee to the solar firm.

“That was a concern about the financial status of Solyndra,” an administration official told reporters on Friday afternoon. “If you’re going to do an event, [Zychal wondered] is there communications concern about the financial condition of the company that we should be aware of?”

Zichal’s worries were communicated to higher-ups at the White House, including Biden’s then-chief of staff Ron Klain, but officials proceeded with the Biden event and the loan. The emails state then-White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel was the official who suggested the administration hold a political event touting Solyndra in connection with loan approval, the memos show.

“[Klain] has talked to Rahm about this and feels Rahm wants this too (barring any concerns)—POTUS’s involvement was Rahm’s idea,” Aditya Kumar, a White House director of special projects, wrote in an email to other officials in August 2009.

In late 2010, when the administration had decided to renegotiate the loan as Solyndra’s financial troubles worsened, one official laments in an email that the administration wouldn’t be in jeopardy of a loan default by Solyndra had it relied instead on tax credits to spur clean energy growth.

The loan and Solyndra’s subsequent bankruptcy have become a focal point of investigations by House Republicans into whether Democratic donors and fund-raisers associated with the company exerted any pressure on the administration to approve a loan to the company despite its shaky financial situation.

Administration officials directly familiar with the new documents stressed repeatedly Friday that they showed there was no political pressure or influence by campaign contributors who backed Solyndra that influenced the Energy Department’s decision to award the loan.

The new emails support the administration’s general storyline about how it awarded the loan guarantee amid some internal concerns about the financial health of the company and why the administration later agreed to renegotiate the terms of the loans to put taxpayers’ interests behind those of Solyndra’s private investors in case of a default.

It also is unclear whether the new gesture by the White House, releasing some memos and offering to let congressional investigators come to the White House to read others, would ease the demands of the House Energy and Commerce Committee that more documents be produced under a subpoena issued recently.

White House officials have said that subpoena was too broad and that they have now produced 185,000 pages of documents to answer all the legitimate oversight questions Congress should have.

Since when did a person have the right to tell the law that they would only hand over certain papers related to a subpoena. What is obama and his administration hiding? EVEN HIS FOLLOWERS SHOULD WONDER WHAT THEY ARE HIDING BUT THEY WON'T!
      • Bruce 6 mths ago
When has obama followed the law?

Solyndra is just a slightly bigger example of what happened at SEVERAL companies. The one that comes to my mind is Evergreen Solar ( smaller scale, same deal ).
The CEO convinced the Board of Directors to give him a percentage of the money he would save the company, after the company got a huge loan from the state.
He then made arrangements to EXPORT ALL THE COMPANY WORK TO CHINA, and collected about SEVEN MILLION DOLLARS in bonuses at the same time that all the employees were laid off. He then stopped coming to work..........didn't quit, or retire, he just disappeared.
Once China got the work ( and the technology to do it ) they basically stole the technology and used it to create a competing product. Evergreen is now Bankrupt, a lot of people are out of work, China is happy, the CEO is on easy street, and the
State who made the loan is totally bug-nuts about being swindled........

It started as a good idea, honest and straightforward. Then the DISHONEST BEAN COUNTERS got control of it, made it a Political selling point, bloated it with loans that should never have been made, and gutted it for their own gain...........
      Quote: " GREED IS GOOD " ????
      • Tiantan 6 mths ago
.....before I forget, the Evergreen private investors ( including many employees ) LOST EVERYTHING due to a "reverse stock split" that made their stocks WORTHLESS........

but bill clinton said by selling our manufacturing base to china we could balance the budget and he would be revered.

Solyndra and the Whitehouse have been shredding documents, travel records and dumping emails. They did miss a few though. there should be 40 to 60 people go to jail for this but I bet it will only be 3 to 4 who are sacrificed so the others can slither their way out.

Soyndra is not the only corrupt green company either, they are 4 more being investigated and some others that will be investigated as well. Seems like they all used the same MO. Made trips to the Whitehouse, gave large donations, and then got millions of seed money, and then went broke and the CEOs got big bonuses. And the Whitehouse is attempting to shield these CEOs and companies. Was actually going to give these some more money. May still yet give them some more money because some of these same green people are starting other green companies and applying for seed money again. I don't think we can afford 4 more years of this. But I am sure all of the liberal environmentalists are perfectly OK with this.

Biden and Rahm need to cough up $535 Million and put back in the TaxPayers Coffer !!!!!!!
    • dd  •  Reno, United States  •  6 mths ago
Why did the administration later agreed to renegotiate the terms of the loans to put taxpayers’ interests behind those of Solyndra’s private investors in case of a default. That is the question that needs to be answered. The GM investors lost everything they invested when the Government loaned the struggling car company. GM investors must not of been Obama supporters.

In earlier reports, e-mail concerns from the Obama Administration warned that taking that visit to Solyndra could result in political backlash if the company failed. Yet, Obama went anyways, even touting Solyndra as the future of Green Energy.
I really don't care if Obama was involved in helping his crony bundlers or he was just pushing his Green agenda. Either way, if that loan was agreed to be restructured putting the tax payer interest behind Solyndra, in the backdrop of what they obviously knew already, Obama should be impeached.

      2012..a great year for impeachment
    • Steve O  •  6 mths ago
What I see evidenced here is that there were experts who questioned the validity of even making this loan but that the Administration chose to ignore those warnings. That speaks very highly of arrogance when you won't listen to the experts that you hire. Why does a President appoint experts? To advise him in areas where his knowledge or expertise is lacking.

This is one email that Heather Zychal is going to be glad she sent, and that Biden and Obama are going to wish she hadn't. In my forty years in the business world, when a subordinate expresses concerns to a superior, the consequences are passed on and borne by the superior.

Everything about this administration stinks to high heaven.....please America, throw these bums out next year and don't ever allow another democrat within 100 miles of D.C.
