Sony to Adapt Sci-Fi Comic ‘Descender’ from Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen
The first issue of “Descender” may not be out yet, but Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen’s comic book series is already headed for the bigscreen.
Sony has picked up feature film rights for the sci-fi series.
New York Times bestselling author Lemire and comic artist Nguyen will exec produce, with Josh Bratman producing the film adaptation. Sony’s Michael De Luca and Rachel O’Connor will oversee the project.
“It was a competitive situation for ‘Descender,’ and we are thrilled that it ended with Sony Pictures acquiring the series,” Lemire and Nguyen said in a statement. “We know that their film translation will do justice to the original comics, and we are thrilled with their belief in the franchise potential.”
The sci-fi space opera, which will be released on March 4 from Image Comics, follows a lifelike boy robot whose machine DNA may hold the key to the origin of the planet-sized bots that wiped out entire worlds. He’s therefore the most wanted robot in a universe that has outlawed androids.
Lemire is best known for his comics “Sweet Tooth,” “Trillium” and “Animal Man,” while Nguyen’s credits include “American Vampire, “Batman Eternal” and “Batman Li’l Gotham.”
Lemire and Nguyen are repped by Cheng Caplan Company, and Stone, Meyer, Genow, Smelkinson & Binder.
