Sony gets into wearables with Core SmartBand and Lifelog app
Sony on Monday at CES 2014 unveiled its own new wearable device that includes smart technology, the Core SmartBand, alongside the Lifelog companion application for mobile devices. Combined, the two products will let users track various aspects of their lives. The small Core gadget can be further embedded in other products, including Sony’s upcoming SmartBand. The Core features a three LED lights and a vibrating motor that can offer quick notification alerts when paired with a mobile device. Sony’s wearable concept offers battery life of up to five days and has a button that can help users record moments in their life on their Lifelog application.
“[…] this could be the tiniest gadget Sony has ever made, but it’s at the heart of our vision. We call this Core. Through the Lifelog application, this tiny waterproof device will capture many aspects of your life,” Sony Mobile CEO Kunimasa Suzuki said on stage. “We’re not just about motion, but emotion… this is not just about logging your motion. It makes recommendations for you.”
The app will be able to keep track of a variety of things and display them in a side-scrolling timeline on a mobile device. Lifelog will display communications, pictures and weather details, track exercise sessions and sleep, and even record a history of content consumption on mobile devices including movies watched and songs listened during workouts. The app can also map routes.
The Core will start selling in the U.S. and Europe in the first quarter of the year for €99 (around $135), while packs of three colorful SmartBands for the Core will cost €15 to €20 ($20 to $27).
