SOPA Author Attacks Wikipedia, Schedules Debate on Bill

The architect of SOPA, Rep. Lamar Smith, has scheduled a markup session next month in which the bill might be altered.

In a markup session, a bill is opened to members of the House Judicial Committee for debate, amendments and other changes. The House will not be taking a final vote on SOPA. The markup session was announced via a statement from the House Committee on the Judiciary, of which Rep. Smith (R-Texas) is the chair.

In another statement, Rep. Smith lambasted Wikipedia for its decision to blackout in protest of SOPA:

"It is ironic that a website dedicated to providing information is spreading misinformation about the Stop Online Piracy Act," reads the statement. "The bill will not harm Wikipedia, domestic blogs or social networking sites. This publicity stunt does a disservice to its users by promoting fear instead of facts. Perhaps during the blackout, Internet users can look elsewhere for an accurate definition of online piracy."

[More from Mashable: On the Street: Do You Understand SOPA? [VIDEO]]

On Friday, Rep. Smith announced he would remove the DNS blocking and rerouting provisions of the bill, considered the most onerous by many in the tech community. As first written, SOPA would have allowed copyright holders and the federal government the ability to remove infringing websites from the DNS (Domain Name System). Many tech experts claimed this would have had negative consequences for the stability, speed and security of the Internet.

DNS works as a sort of “phone book” for the internet. When a user types a URL into a browser, DNS helps the users’ computer find and speak with the correct server hosting the content the user wants to access. If a website is taken off the DNS system, it becomes more difficult for the average Internet user to arrive at that site.

The news comes after House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) assured a colleague there would not be a vote on SOPA unless there was "consensus" on the bill. After Cantor's statement, many presumed SOPA dead in the water, and the focus shifted to a similar Senate bill (the Protect IP Act).

Rep. Smith's scheduling of a markup session suggests SOPA isn't quite dead yet.

Proponents of SOPA, such as Viacom and the MPAA, argue that it's a necessary legislative tool to combat online piracy and content theft. The MPAA has said that DNS provisions are now "off the table," but is still encouraging Congress to pass a bill to help fight intellectual property theft.

Detractors, including many in the tech industry (and tech giants like Google and Facebook), argue that SOPA would result in a slower, less stable and less secure Internet while hampering digital innovation.

Wikipedia, Reddit and Imgur are planning blackouts, while Google will add links to SOPA-related information on its main page. A public rally to protest SOPA and PIPA is planned for Wednesday afternoon.

      SOPA: Black out

Unless you want the US Government “starting” the first step to controlling the information “You” are allowed to see or receive, YOU MUST get involved.
Freedom of information and outside interactions is the first thing a domestic abuser or a Government does to control and isolate YOU.
Once your source of information is restricted you can slowly be feed a selected philosophy of news. That is what is being attempted now in the US.

YOU! Right NOW! Not in the future should be, must be the defender of informational freedom. It takes all Americans to defend “The Freedom of the press” which is the bedrock of this Republic.

No more free porn. That should be enough to get the neutrals against SOPA. However, on a serious note, I live in a country where the internet is censored and trust me, it is not a good thing.

SOPA goes Hand in Hand with NDAA. Bloggers and anyone posting anti-government comments will disapear.

Oh Lamar Smith you are so cute with your outdated fears of the interwebs and not noticing the hypocrisy of controlling information and being old to have grown up around Red Scare times. I guess he didn't hear how Communist Russia loved to control information isn't that adorable!

I don't see how watching a show I missed two months ago on a video-viewing website is a harm to the MPAA...

Looks like the author is going to have to find another way to keep the public down. It was a good try though.

If you look at the players, this issue is CORPORATIONS against users (the people), where once again the gov't has chosen to back the corps.

Like about everything else in the USA, SOPA and PIPA are about protecting the interests of the super rich. Fight your own battles, corporations!

Honorable Representative Lamar Smith, Name one time in the history of the US that the Government has known when to stop at what they say the original intent was. I can answer that for you, NEVER. You politicians will twist that which ever way you want. Don't like what is being written about you or your peers, shut them down. The only other reason I can think of for this bill, other than protecting yourselves, is that you owe the big money and this is what they want. If their copy rights and patents are so important to them, explain why we the tax payers are the one protecting their property?

Congress as become the lackey of Big Business.

Lamar, I don't know you before. Now I do. And I'll do whatever I can, to the full extent of the law and under the Constitution of the United States of America, to get you out of your office.

It's a new Freedom! Why aren't all of you excited? Congress may just give us the "freedom" to be 'Allowed to View" internet content. Wow ! /s

Seriously though, do the Hollywood producers and Celebrities need to be protected ? The NFL ? Gosh, we saved the too big to fail banks, now we are being forced to provide special protection for a certain class of content providers. This legislative attempt to tame the internet will make Sarbanes-Oxley look cheap.

SOPA has everything to do with using your tax money to protect the profits of the members of the RIAA and MPAA, and little to do with protecting intellectual property. If online piracy was something that didn't hurt corporations, but only harmed independent film maker and musicians, then there wouldn't be a bill at all, and the politicians would be saying "It's not our job to protect your creations, take them to civil court." But as soon as lobbyists and money gets involved suddenly it's vital to stop these horrible crimes. Independent artists know that while online theft is an issue, the authors of this bill couldn't give a #$%$ about anything but their own profits. (in fact if independent artists were driven out of business the RIAA would stand up and cheer, more money for them.)

We don't want the bill marked up, we don't want it period. I'm tired of the new police state.

I thought Repubes were for "less government looking over our affairs, telling us what to do, blah blah..."?
      • Matt 4 mths ago
The problem is there are congressmen on both sides backing it. I'm a repub, but I hate SOPA. Most Repubs do not support SOPA.
      • Ryan Chandler 4 mths ago
Haha, sure they do Matt. Republicans just talk less governments. Since 1981 we have had 20 years of Republicans and 11 years of Dems, yet the government grows bigger and bigger year after year. If Repubs were really against big government they would have used their time office to decrease the size.
    • EH  •  4 mths ago
I'm willing to pay a reasonable amount of money for creative content, provided most of it ends up with the artist. I think nine people out of ten think that way. If those that are supposed to gather the cash for artists would not put so much in their own pockets and would stop making things so complicated for artists as well as the general public, people would be even more agreeable than that.

Virtually unknown congressman from Oklahoma rails against Wikipedia, the third most trafficked website on the internet. Good luck with that one, Lamar.
