Sought-After Tattoo Artist Inks People Free – But There’s A Catch

Would you get a tattoo done if you couldn’t choose the design or see what it looked like until it was finished? That’s tattoo artist Scott Campbell’s deal.

As part of his project “Whole Glory” he doesn’t charge his clients, but he doesn’t let them have any say in the ink they get either.

It’s a way of him spreading his skin art and a game of trust.

Campbell, from Louisiana but based in Brooklyn, isn’t any old tattoo artist. Over the years, he’s made quite a name for himself and built up an elite client list.

In fact, it was a celebrity that kick-started his career back in 2005. Four years after he moved to New York and opened his studio Saved Tattoo in the up-and-coming neighborhood of Williamsburg, “an impatient Australian” came in and asked for a small bird in flight to be tattooed onto his left forearm, he told The New York Times.

The following day, journalists swarmed the place, asking him about the tattoo he had just given Heath Ledger.

Since then, he’s inked the likes of Marc Jacobs, Orlando Bloom, Robert Downey Jr. and Penelope Cruz and has gained much acclaim from fine art communities globally for his work in mediums other than skin.

So it’s fair to say that whatever tattoo he settles on will be pretty exceptional.

Nevertheless, sticking your arm in a whole and hoping that you won’t hate what’s on it when you pull it back out is a little daunting, to say the least.

You can get an idea of his style by perusing his Instagram account. He’s clearly a fan of skulls, snakes and roses and likes to dabble in geometric patterns, too.
