Sounding hoarse, looking tired, pope leads new "princes" of church in Mass

VATICAN CITY - Sounding hoarse and looking tired, Pope Benedict XVI is leading 22 new "princes" of the church at Mass in St. Peter's Basilica a day after installing them as cardinals.

Many of the men who sat before the pope Sunday in white robes will likely vote in secret conclave for Benedict's successor after his death. Benedict, who turns 85 in April, read a long homily in a hoarse voice and appeared weary on the third day of public rituals for the new cardinals. Benedict told the 22 new members of the College of Cardinals their main task is to "bear witness to the joy of love."

The Vatican has seen months of intrigue involving alleged corruption and apparent jockeying for power within the hierarchy.

I am not out to offend anyone, especially the Catholic community with my comment... “Vicar of Christ” is not a priest, high priest, bishop, or pope. The only biblical “Vicar of Christ” is the Holy Spirit. John 14:26 declares, “But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” John 14:16-18 proclaims, “And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counselor to be with you forever, the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you know Him, for He lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.” The Holy Spirit is Christ’s “replacement” on the earth. The Holy Spirit is our Counselor, Teacher (John 14:26), and guide into all truth (John 16:13).In claiming that the pope is the “Vicar of Christ,” the Catholic Church rejects the sufficiency and supremacy of Christ’s priesthood, and grants to the pope roles that Christ Himself declared would belong to the Holy Spirit. It is therefore blasphemy to ascribe to the pope the title of “Vicar of Christ.”

Very insightful comment, Joe. Thanks for sharing these cogent thoughts. I find it odd that the main task of a cardinal is to "bear witness to the joy of love." Where does Jesus figure in the grand scheme of things? Never have I heard of His name, and I find it odd to say the least.

The princes of the church live like kings in palaces and robed in cloth of gold, and the poor of the world suffer. What is wrong with this picture?

Hm that would be interesting if it made any sense.

False Profits! (Folks getting rich in the name of God, Allah, Jehova, Budda, Mohammed, Jesus, ect!)
People need to quit giving them money and instead give directly to the poor!

I wonder what Jesus must think of these proud, pompous "princes". Can you picture Christ wearing those valuable vestments and prancing about in those comical, conical caps?
      • A Yahoo! User 3 mths ago
Of course, Christ is the eternal high priest of the new covenant, the high priest of the old testament had fancy vestments based on archeological evidence and since the new testament fulfills the old testament I see no reasons why not. Any more clichés you need to get off your chest?
      • ANDROLOMA 3 mths ago
Eternal high priests sure wear some fancy clothes, hee-yuk!

I think the Popes should be able to take retirement when they become elderly and ill.
      • Shane H 3 mths ago
except they're elderly and ill before they ever take office...so maybe just do away with 'popes' entirely and save everyone a lot of irritation and money.

One can, though it's only been done once.

Princes? What the heck? No wonder the church is in the state it is, what is the Pope, King? They should declare themselves Jesus and God and get it overwith.

Isn’t it cute to see these trailer park theologians trying to outdo each other at bashing the Catholic faith? No matter what the actual article is about, if it includes the word Catholic, the comments will be exactly the same.

My intentions is not to offend anyone, especially Catholics...The Pope of Rome is usually addressed as :Holy Father" But his Italian staff often address him as Santissimo Padre, means "Most Holy Father."The Title "Holy Father" is a title that appears only once in the Bible in John 17:11. It is the exclusive title of the Supreme Being , God.

When theory and reality meet on the dance floor reality leads: Theory-the christian church(including catholicism) is good, it follows and upholds Christ's moral teachings. Reality-The Christian church has a long history of decidedly UN-Christ-like behavior. Mass murder and hiding Pedophiliac Priests being the most glaring examples of the church gone wrong.

I see no difference between the Pope, Rick Santorum, or Osama Bin Ladin.
All are religious terrorists and threats to freedom in America!(And they are a threat to Americas National Security!)

I do not like the pope, but I also do not enjoy seeing the elderly suffer. What Catholics are now doing to the pope is unconscionable. How about breaking from the rigmarole and give the guy a well desired holiday. He could use some time off.

Want Religion out of the Political Process? Tax them!! No more Free Ride, Tax the #$%$ out of them!! My freedom of religion does not warrant a presidential candidate, backed by Religion, to exercise my Rights as a Citizen of this Country nor My Right as a Human Being to pursue happiness in my Lord's Kingdom. The Catholic Church is out of touch with the 21st century and is trying to place itself before God, as Sole Religious Ruler. These are MEN attempting to rule the world based on "Phoney Theology." God will Judge ye as he will judge me.

The Mass??? Jesus died once for all. There is no need for a continuing sacrifice for sin.
