Spaceballs 2 Posters Appear In New York

The long-awaited sequel to Mel Brooks’s 1987 ‘Star Wars’ spoof ‘Spaceballs’ looks like it could finally be happening as teaser posters for the film have mysteriously popped up in a New York subway station.

However, we’d urge you to take them with a huge pinch of salt. Check them out below…

The teaser posters for ‘Spaceballs: The Search For More Money’ were first reported by The Mines Press, a New York based printing company, so the source isn’t exactly official and the way they appear to have been taped up “in a lower Manhattan subway station” adds a certain amount of suspicion to the whole story.

They are impressively presented though and seem to have been inspired by ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ with the chuckle-inducing tagline “The Schwartz awakens with an even greater helmet”.

A sequel to the cult spoof has been rumoured for a long time with the original’s writer-director Mel Brooks stating in 2015 that he thinks now - riding on the back of the success of ‘The Force Awakens’ would be the right time to make it.

“I’m thinking now, if I said, if I did a movie that came out right after ‘Star Wars’ comes out, you know, maybe a couple of months later, ‘Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money’, I’d have a big weekend,” he told Adam Corolla, “you know, no matter what, even if it fell on its a** and you know, didn’t get that money back.”

Assembling the cast would prove problematic though, as John Candy who played the film’s Chewbacca-alike Barf, and Joan Rivers who voiced the gold-plated fembot Dot Matrix have both passed away since the film’s release.

Rick Moranis, who played the film’s bumbling villain Dark Helmet, has also effectively retired from Hollywood and hasn’t made a movie since 2016.

So until we get official confirmation from MGM, take this as an unconfirmed rumour for now.
