Spacewalking astronauts move crane, skip shields

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Two spacewalking astronauts moved a construction crane outside the International Space Station on Thursday, a cumbersome job that took so long they scrapped hanging shields to protect against space junk.

Russians Oleg Kononenko and Anton Shkaplerov spent more than three hours struggling to move the 46-foot crane, using another boom. By the time it was locked into its new position, the two were beat.

"It's huge. We're all hot and bothered," one of the spacewalkers told Mission Control outside Moscow.

The crane wobbled and flapped back and forth as the astronauts relocated it on the Russian side of the orbiting complex. Flight controllers urged them to be careful and avoid banging into the space station.

"It's a little closer ... than I'd like it to be," a voice called out. The astronauts said the crane was awkward to handle.

Spotty communications complicated the work. At times, the radio links were so poor that the controllers repeatedly informed the spacewalkers, "unintelligible, unintelligible." And at the beginning of the spacewalk, a balky ring at the hatch held the two men up.

In the end, Kononenko and Shkaplerov did not have enough time to install any micrometeorite shielding on one of the station's oldest compartments.

Space debris is a major threat to the space station. NASA's compartments were launched with armor already in place, while Russia's were not. Station construction wrapped up last year, with the close of the shuttle program.

The shielding will be saved for a future spacewalk; the next one isn't scheduled until August. The pace of spacewalks has slowed considerably since construction ended at the 250-mile-high lab.

Besides the crane work, the spacewalkers hung out a science experiment and, before going back inside, took a sample swab from an area covered by thermal blankets to check for any growth.

There wasn't even time for picture-taking. As the six-hour spacewalk came to a close, one of the astronauts commented: "I cannot believe we have not taken a single shot of anything."

The crane relocation was the main objective, though, and Mission Control congratulated the two for accomplishing the "enormous task."

The space station's four other residents — Americans Daniel Burbank and Donald Pettit, Russian Anatoly Ivanishin and Dutchman Andre Kuipers — monitored Thursday's spacewalk from inside.

Opted not to do the shield, huh? Now I don't feel so bad about the two screws leftover from my Ikea table.

Obama killed our space program so these comments are relevant.

We need to devote more time and effort to the Space Station. I'm afraid we're neglecting it.

at long last: space exploration is in real life just like it was when i was a kid and watched Captain Video on b & w tv...and the original Flash Gordon series.

Flash Gordon never had to poop in a sandwich bag.

"It's huge. We're all hot and bothered," ??? Only a kook would choose to quote that.
Look up base in the dictionary and you will see a picture of Ms. Dunn.

Isnt it funny how we allegedly sent a dozen astronauts 237,000 miles to the moon and back in the early 70s, and since then for over 40 years we've only sent people a few hundred miles above the earth. Makes you wonder, dont it. Talk about a technological "moon walk" (as in backwards) Lol

Awkward to handle? You think? They have a control box no bigger then a R.C. helicopter control box and they say it's awkward to handle this crane.
All i can say is good job guys.

Astronauts? . . . I think it was Cosmonauts . . . and 6 hours of it was broadcast live . . . and free . . . on RT on-line. Let the engineers explain why the shields weren't placed . . . this site was probably not written by someone with that knowledge.

Seems the Space Station has a problem similiar to Yahoo... Stories without photos ...

"We're all hot and bothered?" Makes you wonder what they do when they're alone in the capsule.

        Kinda what I was thinking, then I realized . . . there's not a woman on board.

        Scary.

This sounds like the most dangerous job... I started to say, on Earth, but you know what I mean.

Obviously, the priority was the crane not protection. What's up with no pictures, since the spacewalk was being monitored from inside, couldn't they operate the camera? You would think it would be set up for inside use as normal..hmmm a little fishy perhaps?? Just saying..

I thought this was an international space station. why was the crane moved to the "RUSSIAN" side of the craft. isn't the whole thing "INTERNATIONAL"?
    • LastTrueConservative  •  3 mths ago
Wow, I've seen tall constructions cranes, but never thought they'd get in the way of the space station. ;) Picture of the real thing would have helped alleviate the confusion probably.

"Move the crane first, worry about shielding to keep people alive later."That had to be a decision made by some guy on the ground who never has been and never will be going to that station...no way the austronauts themselves actually said, "Hey, instead of putting up armor to keep the station from exploding from decompression if a micrometeorite hits us, let's move the crane. We can live here for half a year without the armor...after all, nothing#$%$ us yet!"

Obama has destroyed our space program.
    • Andrew  •  3 mths ago
Well, if they need some help maybe NASA can help... oh, wait, they can't; we scrapped our only manned launch system before the next one was finished being designed.

      Great job, NASA - NOT!

Why are US tax dollars supporting a Holiday Inn Express, even if it is 200 miles above earth?
