    Spain sees good demand in $6 billion bond sale

    MADRID (AP) — Spain raised euro4.56 billion ($6 billion) Thursday in a bond auction that showed strong investor demand and a drop in the country's borrowing rates, extending a run of successful debt sales suggesting market confidence is improving.

    The total sold was just above the Treasury's maximum target of euro4.5 billion.

    It sold euro2.5 billion in three-year bonds at an average yield of 2.9 percent, down from 3.4 percent in the last such auction on Jan. 17. Demand was 1.6 times the amount on offer, less than the 1.8 oversubscription rate seen last month.

    The agency also sold euro984 million in bonds maturing in 2016 at an interest rate of 3.5 percent and euro1.05 billion falling due in 2017, at a yield 3.6 percent. For these two, there were no strictly comparable rates from previous auctions. In these cases, demand outstripped the amount sold by ratios of 3.6 and 2.7.

    Earlier, the Labor Ministry reported the number of people filing for unemployment benefits rose by 177,470 in January, taking the overall total to a rounded 4.6 million.

    Spain's jobless rate stands at 22.9 percent, the highest in the 17-nation eurozone. The economy posted negative growth in the fourth quarter of 2011 and is expected to enter recession this quarter.

    The new right-leaning Popular Party government is promising a major labor reform next week in a desperate bid to reboot the economy.
