Spain's Belmonte wins 1,500 race at Euros

BERLIN (AP) — Mireia Belmonte Garcia claimed gold for Spain with a continental record in the women's 1,500-meter freestyle at the European swimming championship on Saturday.

Belmonte won in 15 minutes, 57.29 seconds, ahead of Hungary's Boglarka Kapas in 16:03.04 and Italy's Martina Rita Caramignoli in 16:05.98.

Poland's Konrad Czerniak won the men's 100 butterfly in a continental record of 51.38 seconds, beating Hungary's Laszlo Cseh by 0.51 seconds. Pavel Sankovich of Belarus claimed bronze, 0.54 off the pace.

Another Pole, Radoslaw Kawecki, won the men's 200 backstroke in 1:56.02, ahead of Germany's Christian Diener in 1:57.16 and Hungary's Gabor Balog in 1:57.42.

Adam Peaty won the men's 50 breaststroke after setting a world record of 26.62 seconds in his semifinal heat the day before. The Briton claimed gold in 27.00, ahead of Giedrius Titenis of Lithuania in 27.34 and Damir Dugonjic of Slovenia in 27.48.

Federica Pellegrini of Italy won the women's 200 freestyle, finishing in 1:26.47 ahead of Hungary's Katinka Hosszu in 1:26.62 and Dutch swimmer Femke Heemskerk in 1:26.65.

Francesca Halsall led a British 1-2 in the women's 50 backstroke, clocking 27.81 to edge Georgia Davies by one hundredth of a second. Mie Nielsen of Denmark claimed the bronze in 27.87.

Home fans had reason to cheer when the German team won the 4x200 freestyle final ahead of Russia and Belgium.

In diving events, Russia's Victor Minibaev claimed gold in the men's 10-meters, while Italian pair Tania Cagnotto and Francesca Dallape won the women's synchronized 3-meter final.

"It was our sixth gold medal in this event. This is the first reason to be happy. And the second one is the score because we performed well," Cagnotto said.
