SPCA: NYC vet dumped euthanized pets along highway

HARRISON, N.Y. (AP) — A New York veterinarian has been charged with dumping 35 euthanized pets alongside a highway.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Westchester tells the Journal News (http://lohud.us/JruGzq ) that Andrew Manesis took payments to properly dispose of 26 euthanized cats, eight dogs and a lizard. Instead, they say, he dumped them alongside Westchester County's Hutchinson River Parkway over several months.

A Transportation Authority worker found the carcasses on April 5. It appeared the pets had been cared for well while they were alive.

Manesis faces misdemeanor charges of petit larceny, scheme to defraud and a violation of environmental code. His court appearance is scheduled for June 5.

A message left at Throgs Neck Animal Hospital in the Bronx wasn't immediately returned.

Manesis lives in New Canaan, Conn.

    • Why is AT&T milking subscribers for an extra $500 million? ‘Because they can’

AT&T said earlier this week that it will add a new administrative fee to each of its wireless subscribers’ monthly bills. The fee is only $0.61, which doesn’t sound like much, and an AT&T spokesperson was quick to point out to several news sites that this new fee is lower than similar fees charged by rival carriers. Subscribers were still outraged. Now that the shouting has died down a bit, however, people are looking for a batter explanation for the new charge they’ll see each month. According to one industry watcher, that explanation couldn’t be simpler: “Because they can.” “Why would AT&T do this? Because they can, and it is all in the pricing strategy,” Joe Hoffman, principal analyst at ABI Research
