Spin Magazine Premieres Nirvana Cover Album on Facebook

Nirvana's iconic album Nevermind turns 20 this year. To celebrate, Spin magazine is releasing a cover album that will be available in its entirety Tuesday on Facebook .

The album -- cleverly titled Newermind -- is a companion to Spin's August tribute issue (see the cover to the right) and features a melange of musical styles: Titus Andronicus, The Vaselines and Surfer Blood all cribbing Cobain's crooning.

Check out an exclusive stream below of JEFF the Brotherhood taking on "Something in the Way" to get a taste of what to expect. (The band recorded this version in a van at Bonnaroo on cassette and then digitized it. How retro.)

[More from Mashable: MuteMath Releases New Track Via Interactive Audio/Visual Remix Board]

You'll be able to check out the whole stream Tuesday on Spin's Facebook Page. The content will be behind a "Like Gate," so you'll have to "Like" Spin before accessing the tunes.

The magazine is also offering artist reflections of the disc via a gallery packed with musings from the likes of Eddie Vedder, Dave Grohl and Wayne Coyne.

When it comes to injecting digital into old media, Spin has stood as one of the most innovative music publications from its excellent iPad app (featuring a streaming playlist for every issue), to its integration with Shuffler.fm (which allows you to listen to all the tracks of a music blog as you read). Spin has also offered tunes for Likes -- it's currently featuring a Bonnaroo mixtape in exchange for some love.

What do you think of the magazine's Nirvana tribute?

So many of you who are complaining don’t understand the influence that Nirvana had. Regardless what you think of the music itself or Kurt Cobain you cannot make light of what he had accomplished. Up to that point the music that was popular was buttrock Glam "metal" like Poison or Motley Crew. Nirvana paved the way for simple high melody music that was accessible to everyone that had emotion. So Kurt didn’t play ten thousand notes a second or have intricate solos but I challenge you to say he cant play. Listen to the Unplugged album. Kurt can play and he plays very well.

"Jesus Don't Want Me For a Sunbeam" is a Mormon Hymn called "Jesus Wants Me For a Sunbeam," played backwards. To anyone who denies that Kurt was a genius, let it be recanted. May you have the peace you deserve, Mr Cobain.

Zeppelin and Sabbath did that shit years ago, and they were ripping off the Beatles.

The Vaselines wrote that song. Cobain gives them credit on Unplugged before he plays it.

"Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam" is a song originally recorded by Scottish alternative band The Vaselines for their EP Dying for it. It is a parody on the children's hymn, "I'll Be a Sunbeam", which has the opening line "Jesus wants me for a sunbeam".

In 1992, The Vaselines re-released the song with a slight title change ("Jesus Doesn't Want Me for a Sunbeam") on the compilation album The Way of the Vaselines: A Complete History.

Nirvana released a cover of "Jesus Doesn't Want Me for a Sunbeam" on their live acoustic album MTV Unplugged in New York. Nirvana also released two more versions of this song on their 2004 box set With the Lights Out. This included an acoustic version recorded in Europe in 1994, along with a live electric performance on the DVD section of the box-set.

On the version contained on the MTV Unplugged in New York album, Kurt Cobain refers to the song as: "a rendition of an old Christian song, I think. But we do it the Vaselines' way."

I'll take Nirvana on top of the pop charts any day over what's out now. Club music. Come on. I'm not saying Nirvana was the most talented bunch of musicians ever, but their music inspired a generation to pick up the guitar. We could use another Nirvana right about now.
      • Christopher 10 mths ago
I give credit to the Black Keys for my renewed interest in the guitar. The music is out there, it's just not found on all the radios. MTV killed real music when they stopped playing music.

They only had the one good CD so they truly weren't as iconic as say REM or Eric Clapton Beatles and so forth
      • Purnell Meagre 10 mths ago
REM - oh no!!!! You just posted REM is better than Nirvana! Oh No!!!!!!!! What's next? The Pet Shop Boys?
      • Lamont Doodlenicker 10 mths ago
Nirvana turned to REM producer Scott Litt to get the sound they wanted on some songs. And yes, REM is a way better band.

Nevermind was all it took to change everything. It killed the butt rock like Poison and Crew. Thank God.

Curt Cobain was a whiney dirty low life and everyone is making him out to be some icon in the music industry. Just proves that the industry tells us what popular, not the other way around. Take me back to the days when music was real and meaningful.

        You know nothing about music.
    • Bass Man  •  10 mths ago
20 years ago...."The day the music died"...and I still don't understand the "influence" of a guy that couldn't play guitar...
      • jmcal408 10 mths ago
Keep listening to those corporate sell outs, the Rolling Stones then.
    • Lamont Doodlenicker  •  10 mths ago
Nirvana was about as influential as the last bowel movement I took. Their influence came from record execs. And Curt Cobain was a greedy, egotistical fool.
    • Richard  •  10 mths ago
nirvana was a boring untalented overly hyped college circuit band and THEY REALLY " NEVERMIND"...
    • Richard  •  10 mths ago
nirvana ????????????...whats that ??some kind of hippie grunge rich kid heroin thing or something ...there is nothing more boring then a grungy hippie anti-establishment rich kids music or lack of music ..
    • Richard  •  10 mths ago
what a piece of crapola put out by the heirs to the nirvana music ....this band and its lead singer clueless cobain SUCKED ..nothing but a lousy college band trying to act like junkies ..
    • JOhn  •  10 mths ago
a crappy magazine putting a crappy band on it's facebook page whoopie doo
    • David  •  10 mths ago
Why buy the tribute album when you can buy the real thing? I've never understood tribute albums. If I want to hear someone else play a song by Nirvana, I'll do it myself. Otherwise, I'll just listen to Nirvana play Nirvana songs.

change spin to spun and do a tribute to how good they were
    • Purnell Meagre  •  10 mths ago
Will Liza Minnelli be on it?
    • fuzz  •  10 mths ago
Ok he may have been a genius but he wouldn't haven't gotten anyway in music without the help of drugs that eventually took his life. Why pay homeage to a drug infested rock star who probably wouldn't have amounted to anything without drugs. Is this what we want to pass on to generations after that its cool to do drugs if it makes you rich and famous?????
