It appears that good and bad things come in threes this week. After reporting about three marriages that occurred this past weekend, now it's time to comment on three marriages that have ended.
Singer Ben Harperfiled for divorce from wife Laura Dern after five years of marriage. Harper filed the papers on Friday, citing irreconcilable differences, and asked the judge to deny the actress spousal support. Harper is also attempting to gain joint legal and physical custody of their children, Ellery and Jaya.
Allegedly, singer Christina Aguilera has separated from her husband, music producer Jordan Bratman. According to UsMagazine.com, the couple is in the midst of a trial separation to determine whether or not to divorce. An unnamed source told UsMagazine that the couple "were very much in love," but that over the past several months, they seemed more like friends than a couple. The announcement comes a month before Aguilera's musical Burlesque is released.
The most surprising of these three is the split of "Friends" star Courteney Coxand actor David Arquette after 11 years of marriage. The couple, who met on the set of the first Scream film, allegedly broke up several weeks ago and are going through a trial separation. The couple released a very dignified statement explaining the reason for their split, saying:
"We are comfortable with the boundaries that we have established for each other during this separation and we hope that our friends, family, fans and the media also show us respect, dignity, understanding and love at this time as well."
Too bad Arquette couldn't stay classy. In a Tuesday morning interview with Howard Stern (this should be your first clue of bad things to come), Arquette spilled the beans about the failure of his marriage and all the dirty little details, including his affair with celeb party-hopper Jasmine Waltz. However, he stated that this took place after the separation and that he was not unfaithful during his marriage.
Arquette also denied that Cox was having a physical affair with "Cougar Town" co-star Brian Van Holt, but was vague when Stern pushed the limit, asking if they had had an emotional affair.
According to Arquette, it was after Cox told him on their 11th wedding anniversary, "I don't want to be your mother anymore," that things truly unraveled. Arquette then filled Stern in on the details of their marital dysfunction, including all the things we really didn't want to hear.
Let's hope that Cox can ignore this interview and chalk up Arquette's post-breakup babbling to a severe case of forlorn love-nostalgia.
Happy Endings
Just so we end this on a positive note, "Friends" star David Schwimmer has apparently been married to photographer Zoe Buckman since June! Was this late announcement an attempt to draw the media away from co-star Cox's sudden split? We'll never know, but way to be a good friend, Schwimmer.
