SpongeBob in hot water from study of 4-year-olds

CHICAGO (AP) — The cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants is in hot water from a study suggesting that watching just nine minutes of that program can cause short-term attention and learning problems in 4-year-olds.

The problems were seen in a study of 60 children randomly assigned to either watch "SpongeBob," or the slower-paced PBS cartoon "Caillou" or assigned to draw pictures. Immediately after these nine-minute assignments, the kids took mental function tests; those who had watched "SpongeBob" did measurably worse than the others.

Previous research has linked TV-watching with long-term attention problems in children, but the new study suggests more immediate problems can occur after very little exposure — results that parents of young kids should be alert to, the study authors said.

Kids' cartoon shows typically feature about 22 minutes of action, so watching a full program "could be more detrimental," the researchers speculated, But they said more evidence is needed to confirm that.

The results should be interpreted cautiously because of the study's small size, but the data seem robust and bolster the idea that media exposure is a public health issue, said Dr. Dimitri Christakis. He is a child development specialist at Seattle Children's Hospital who wrote an editorial accompanying the study published online Monday in the journal Pediatrics.

Christakis said parents need to realize that fast-paced programming may not be appropriate for very young children. "What kids watch matters, it's not just how much they watch," he said.

University of Virginia psychology professor Angeline Lillard, the lead author, said Nickelodeon's "SpongeBob" shouldn't be singled out. She found similar problems in kids who watched other fast-paced cartoon programming.

She said parents should realize that young children are compromised in their ability to learn and use self-control immediately after watching such shows. "I wouldn't advise watching such shows on the way to school or any time they're expected to pay attention and learn," she said.

Nickelodeon spokesman David Bittler disputed the findings and said "SpongeBob SquarePants" is aimed at kids aged 6-11, not 4-year-olds.

"Having 60 non-diverse kids, who are not part of the show's targeted (audience), watch nine minutes of programming is questionable methodology and could not possibly provide the basis for any valid findings that parents could trust," he said.

Lillard said 4-year-olds were chosen because that age "is the heart of the period during which you see the most development" in certain self-control abilities. Whether children of other ages would be similarly affected can't be determined from this study

Most kids were white and from middle-class or wealthy families. They were given common mental function tests after watching cartoons or drawing. The SpongeBob kids scored on average 12 points lower than the other two groups, whose scores were nearly identical.

In another test, measuring self-control and impulsiveness, kids were rated on how long they could wait before eating snacks presented when the researcher left the room. "SpongeBob" kids waited about 2 1/2 minutes on average, versus at least four minutes for the other two groups.

The study has several limitations. For one thing, the kids weren't tested before they watched TV. But Lillard said none of the children had diagnosed attention problems and all got similar scores on parent evaluations of their behavior.

I think this is so Stupid. Caillou is an educational show, as where Spongebob is more comedy related. So they are like peas and carrots. They are cartoons BUT different genres with in cartoons.

Now this is correct. Spongebob is for adults only. No kids allowed, please.

I am a concern Father. May I ask, what is the best cartoon show for a three year old kid (girl)? (Just asking) Because of this article I got worried for my daughter. SpongeBob was her favorite cartoon character. I hope that the researchers are responsible enough for their findings, that it is accurate. Or otherwise, they are simply destroying the kid's enjoyment of watching SpongeBob Squarepants.

My 2 1/2 yr old loves the Sprout shows and Disney channel stuff. They're usually cute, and often the shows will teach good manners One of my daughter's favorites is Super Why which is very good with reading and spelling. If you don't just plunk her in front of the TV and instead find ways to make what she's watching more interactive you'll be ok.

Reading and interacting with your child is best. I would make little sock puppets and make pretend characters. I made a character just using my hand and called it the Tickle Spider. Use your imagination and interact. A child needs stimulation and interaction from people they trust.

i think "spongebob squarepants" is not a show for kids anyway..the humor is way too complex for kids to understand. on the other hand, parents should try to advice and guide their children on what tv shows their kids can just watch.

" problems were seen in a study of 60 children randomly assigned to either watch "SpongeBob," or the slower-paced PBS cartoon "Caillou"

Ah, so the *PBS* show is better for children? As PBS worries more and more about being defunded, I'm sure we will see more "studies" like this one.

No, PBS is the only channel/programmer that has the slower paced shows, unless you include qubo, but they don't create or provide programming, they just buy and air it. Check out some "kids" channels some time--you'll be amazed. It ain't like the good ol' days when the Superstation was the only channel (out of what, 13?) that aired cartoons.

As a parent, I can assure you - PBS is not the only network with slower paced shows. Also, as a parent of a child who reads 2 grades above her reading level - I can quell any fears of children's minds being stunted by watching fast paced cartoons. I personally love Spongebob. He's cute, friendly and entertaining. Not everything our children watch needs to be "educational" - unless of course, we simply want to raise machines.
      • rachel 8 mths ago
QuarlesTx-How do you equate "educational" to being a machine??
PBS is the only channel that we get that airs the most slower-paced shows, however Nick Jr. airs some as well. And also one local channel airs slow-paced cartoons during certain hours of the day too.

This study is crap! I used to watch cartoons like this all the time when I was growing up and I turned out fi... OOOHHH PANCAKES!
    • jerry  •  8 mths ago
THEY'RE FOUR!!! Show me a four year old that DOESN'T have the attention span of a grapefruit and then I'll take it seriously.
    • Jeremy  •  8 mths ago
But in all seriousness, I will raise my kids exactly how I was raised because I turned out just fine and not a single person will tell me that I HAVE to do otherwise.

Give me an ACTUAL legitimate study, I might consider it.
    • bothered  •  8 mths ago
Ok, so we're siding with a Nickelodeon spokesman against the wisdom of a University of Virginia psychology professor? NA'ns are stupid and should simply let the rest of the world take us over. Think about it: me TV person say show good, versus smart person say "be careful"...

Yes, the study is a warning for parents of 4 year-olds to be careful about what shows their children should be watching. Perhaps not use TV as a caregiver and instead spending more time developing intelligence instead of dumbing down out future leaders. We're running out of smart people because we care about ourselves too much to nurcher and parent!

If you like spongebob, watch it but spend some time with your children developing them - please.

Now that is hilarious :D So SpongeBob is Antichrist!!
    • kingguy3  •  8 mths ago
Just limit their wants, and provide their needs. Don't spoil them, but at the same time spoil them from time to time. This will show your love to them at the same time show your outmost concern for their future. Their future will be based on their emotional discernment in life and also the educational attainment they have. So all you parents out there, do us a favor. Be subtle with your children, balance their life and make them the new generation of good, honest providers of the future. God Bless.

If I had to watch Calliou everyday I would kill myself. That show is awful. Spongebob rocks, so leave it alone.

parents shud teach their childs to limit viewing all TV cartoons, and instead concentrate on their studies at home.

what a bunch of BS. Go do something constructive.
    • Preethi  •  8 mths ago
I think it's just stupid that they're picking on Spongebob. I mean, several cartoons may have the same effect. Besides, most people feel this way after watching any kind of mindless cartoon. Spongebob Squarepants is a fun show for everyone and kids shouldn't be working right after watching TV anyway since it gets you in a sort of lazy mood. They should stop bashing Spongebob. It's a good show. That's why it's been around for so long. Think about THAT! ;)
