    St. Vincent de Paul - Detroit Partners with Michigan Public Service Commission to Provide Utility Assistance

    The Society of St. Vincent de Paul - Detroit (SVdP) is pleased to announce that it has received the Vulnerable Household Warmth Fund grant in the amount of $681,481 from the Michigan Public Service Commission to help vulnerable families from thirteen counties in Michigan keep up with utility payments this winter.

    The Society of St. Vincent de Paul - Detroit (SVdP) is pleased to announce that it has received the Vulnerable Household Warmth Fund grant in the amount of $681,481 from the Michigan Public Service Commission to help vulnerable families from thirteen counties in Michigan keep up with utility payments this winter.

    Home heating costs are expensive, especially for families faced with job losses and lower wages. As one of its Special Works, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul has been providing energy assistance to those living in poverty, senior citizens and others who may be in danger of having their heating services discontinued throughout southeast Michigan for several years. By partnering with Michigan Public Service Commission since 2006, the Society has been able to extend help with utility bills to over 2500 underprivileged households. SVdP is thankful to the Michigan Legislature for passing the Vulnerable Household Warmth Fund which will ensure that our neighbors in need stay warm this winter.

    “The demand for utility assistance in Detroit and the surrounding communities is greater than ever before in these tough economic times. This year we have also been serving people who never, ever imagined that they would need our help to get by,” says Executive Director Bill Brazier. “Besides citizens of the eleven counties – Wayne, Macomb, Oakland, St. Clair, Lapeer, Monroe, Washtenaw, Ingham, Eaton, Clinton and Livingston - that the Society has helped last year, energy assistance is being extended this year to Genesee and Shiawassee counties.”

The Detroit office of The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a major provider of human services. Programs include home visits, housing assistance, disaster relief, job training and placement, food pantries, clothing and utility assistance. The Society works in conjunction with the Archdiocese of Detroit, networking with 2,000 Vincentian volunteers in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Lapeer, St. Clair and Monroe counties, and assisting 30,000 local households annually.
