Is Star Wars: Episode I any better in 3D?

George Lucas is betting that a costly 3D conversion will convince audiences to endure the offensive Jar Jar Binks and tiresome taxation debates anew

Can a 3D revamp make Star Wars: Episode 1 — The Phantom Menace watchable? It's fair to say that the 1999 prequel is the least beloved of the six-film Star Wars saga. When it premiered 13 years ago, critics blasted its narrative obsession with trade taxation routes (yawn); its wooden performances; the creepy flirtation between Natalie Portman's Queen Amidala and 9-year-old Jake Lloyd's Anakin Skywalker; and, above all, the cringe-inducing stereotype known as Jar Jar Binks. Director George Lucas has since spent well over a year on a painstaking 3D conversion (debuting this weekend), which reportedly cost more than the original film. Should wary moviegoers risk $18 to check out the results?

Not a chance: This is still The Phantom Menace, so prepare to be disappointed, says Matt Maytum at Total Film. The plot is still "impenetrably dull" — assuming you haven't developed a fondness for intergalactic bureaucracy in the past decade. Anakin is as bratty as ever, and Jar Jar's "awkward racial stereotypes" are no more forgivable. As for the 3D conversion, the pod race benefits the most, "its speed-thrills boosted by arcade-style immersion." And that lightsaber duel finale "remains a series highlight, in however many dimensions." Everything in between: Still awful.
"Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace review"

The 3D is pretty good, however: This is "easily one of the best post-3D conversions I've seen," says Jason Jenkins at CNET. The newly dimensional pod race scene really is dynamite and the effects are, for the most part, refreshingly subtle. But the 3D occasionally gets in the way of a scene — most egregiously during Anakin's farewell to his mother on Tatooine. Other times "an object is pushed too far into the foreground," straining your eyes. And, while the 3D is "technically very good, it adds little to the overall experience" of the film. If you have kids, this is a must-see. Otherwise, save your cash.
"Is it worth seeing Star Wars in 3D?"

Either way, this is an industry-changing release: It's likely that this re-release will only attract families and Star Wars uber-fans, says Rafer Guzman at Newsday. But even if you don't fall into one of those categories, "keep an eye on this film." We've already seen Disney re-release its treasured animated flicks The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast to critical and commercial success. But this is the first time a studio "has converted an old, summer-style blockbuster into 3D." How it fares may decide whether the treatment will be applied to other popular live-action films that predate the recent 3D boom.

A good movie does not need 3-D to make it better. And 3-D will not save a poor movie.

"Confer on you the level of Has Been Director, the Council does. But agree on you taking this movie as your 3D cash cow, I do not!"

If converting it to 3D required removing Jar-Jar, it *might* improve the movie. However, it will never be a "good" movie.

There's supposed to be a bootleg somewhere in which all of JarJar's lines were overdubbed with a very staid intelligent voice like a Jedi master. It really #$%$ of the studio that someone did it. I'd like to see it sometime.

Crap is better if it is in 3-D I guess. Crap coming right at YOU!

Spoken like a true poet! I love this image.

Re-releasing this 2 hour plus commercial for George Lucas' toys, action figures and video games in 3-D just proves, yet again, that George Lucas has gone over to the dark side of the force. It's all about the money for him. Haven't the parents of America paid enough?

Every generation has a legend. Every journey has a first step. Every saga has a beginning.
      Unfortunately this movie wasn’t it.

Episode 7 with the original formula. I don't want to watch a video game.

Just the thought of Jar Jar Binks in 3D makes me nauseous.

Didn't like episode 1-2-3, loved episode 4-5, and episode 6 was OK. Saw the re-release of episode 4, was OK, but not better then the original, even with the Jaba insert. Pass. Star Wars, I thought, was a 3x3 trilogy, with 3 in the middle(episodes 4-5-6), 3 some 50 years earlier(episodes 1-2-3), and 3 some 50 years later(episodes 7-8-9). I don't think Lucas will complete the trilogy though. Seems he would rather re-release the old than work on the new.

Someday the reins will be given over to a compentent director... maybe when Lucas dies. The studios will definitely want to cash in and the best way would be to give what the audiences want, and that is a well written, well acted and well directed installment that has the look and feel of the originals.

Episodes 4, 5 and 6 are the heart and soul of this great American epic. 3-D will not help the others but the 3-D releases will make tons of money for Lucas. That's OK.

        Just what he needs.

Sure! 3D always cures a bad story.

I happened to think Episdoe 2 was the worst.

Amen. Just plain horrible--at least Phantom had a cool pod race and a great saber fight. And they should have let Maul live for Episode 2....he would have improved it.

Ugh, I can't think anything more revolting that artificial conversion of a non-3D movie to 3D. Except perhaps adding computer color to a classic black and white film.

The pod race could be great in 3-D, but that's about all.
(Astute viewers will see that the pod-racers are modeled on actual modern-day jet engines.)

3-D? It'd be cool if we could lay the screen on a table and everything stood verticle, I'll buy that Blue-"whatever"-Ray

WHAT is the fascination with 3D? Will studios and manufacturers please stop pushing this recurring fad? It's not really all that cool.

Don't go to 3D movies... they give me splitting headaches. The original movie was not all that good to begin with. Sure won't spend what little money I have to see a 3D version.

Episodes 1-3 were all terrible other than the lightsaber fight scenes at the end. George Lucas can re-release all 3 in 3-D if he wants, they will still be as terrible as the first time you watched them.

no !!!!!!!!!!! should have spent the money to make a # 7 with original cast before they all die and he replaces them with a gawd awful actor like Hayden !!! and besides after taking my money on that crap red tails !! not sure i would even give up the money for #7
    • JoeM  •  3 mths ago
3D films will be cool when they don't require the glasses for the 3D effect.
