Star Wars: The Old Republic review; Episode 2: One month later

Greetings from a galaxy far, far away! It’s been about a month since we last got together to talk about Star Wars: The Old Republic. Or, more accurately, it’s been a month since I raved about BioWare‘s work on this highly story-driven massively multiplayer online game. The thing about MMOs is that they’re so community-driven and content update-driven that it’s not fair to either the player or the developer to assess the overall quality of the game immediately after release and call it a day.

Skyrim is a huge game, but a relatively unchanging one until DLC is released. A single review can suffice. The Old Republic, like any other MMO, is a constantly changing world that lives and dies by how many people are playing it, and how frequently. You can only measure that over a long period of time. So over the past month I’ve taken on the back-breaking task of pouring 100+ hours of time into my Star Wars: The Old Republic character so I could come back to you today and share some additional insights.

Okay, that was a filthy lie. Nothing about that 100+ hours of gaming was back-breaking. For one, I have very good posture. More importantly, however, The Old Republic continues to prove a month after its release that it has the legs to keep up the same pace that earned it our tentative 9 out of 10 score the first time around. If the score is what you’re here for, then you can rest easy: 9 out of 10 is what it was and 9 out of 10 is what it continues to be. We even have a fancy graphic to prove it.

    Welcome To The Late Game

The early experience in The Old Republic — say your first 20 or so character levels — is all about coming to grips with the layout of this new MMO universe and forging ahead in the single-player campaign to see your chosen character class’s Act One, and gain access to the necessary tools you’ll need to properly enjoy the later portions of the game. Completing the first story act, which happens at around level 30, unlocks your account’s Legacy, which for now is just a last name and a family or friend connection between all of the characters in a single player’s account. In the next content update, BioWare will be fleshing out the Legacy system with perks designed to help your future characters speed through early sections of the game. More on that below.

    Star-Wars-The-Old-Republic-screenshotStar-Wars-The-Old-Republic-screenshot

A key fact that quickly becomes clear as you enter into the latter portions of The Old Republic is how easy it is to link up with other people and participate in cooperative Heroic and Flashpoint missions (and, eventually, endgame Operations). That chat feed is always right there in the corner of your screen, with scrolling text constantly alerting you to players who are LFG — “Looking For Group” — for one mission or another in whichever zone you’re currently running through.

Linking up with these people is as easy as saying so in General chat and accepting a party invite. It’s a minimally intrusive process that doesn’t require any special hardware like headsets or the like. You have your avatars meet up near the mission point, use text chat in the party to communicate any basic needs, strategies or suggestions and, ultimately, part ways with little more than a “thank you” or “good game” once the co-op mission is over and you’ve reaped your experience rewards. It’s simple and non-threatening to the point that even a relative MMO noob like myself can quickly come to rely on these co-op missions as a main source of XP.

The leveling up process slows down considerably as you rise into the higher character levels, but the resource-gathering and crafting options offered by Crew Skills helps you forget about that by offering more immediate rewards. As you come to understand these systems, you find that you’re constantly sending one or more of your Companions off on missions to raise the associated Crew Skill level, with the ultimate goal being to get yourself to a point where you can craft some of the game’s most useful customizable gear. These more immediate dangling carrots help occupy the grind to the next character level, so much so that it rarely DOES feel like a grind.

Then there are features like PvP, which you can access early but which really shines brightest in the endgame. Not to mention Operations, which are like super-sized versions of the game’s story-driven four-player Flashpoints, for eight or 16 players. Multiple difficulty settings are also available for endgame players, allowing them to run back through Flashpoints that they out-leveled long ago. It’s a tremendous amount of content, as you would expect from an MMO, but it benefits from the same high production values that characterizes the earlier parts of the game. In short, The Old Republic doesn’t get leaner as you play; the story, the rewards, the challenging content– all of it just keeps on coming.

    Fixes And Future Plans

There’s another important element to be judged in this follow-up review: BioWare’s continued commitment to fine-tuning the experience as more players jump in and existing ones reach the endgame. The studio’s commitment to keeping players informed of the goings-on behind the scenes has been nothing less than commendable. The game’s official website is home to a constant stream of updates concerning new content, bug/exploit fixes and the like. A few potentially problematic issues have arisen in the month since SW:TOR arrived, and on every occasion BioWare was quick to act, issuing a fix of some kind within days.

This week saw the first actual content update to the game, adding a new endgame Flashpoint and significantly expanding one of the two Operations that TOR launched with. BioWare has already promised another, even bigger update for March, one that will introduce the aforementioned changes to the Legacy system as well as adding new content for PvP, guilds and endgame play. If there’s any complaint to be made, it’s that none of the new or forthcoming changes really impact players before they’ve reached the endgame. That is to be expected, however; TOR shipped with a TON of content, and most of that is geared toward giving players a fun experience as they climb from level one to level 50.

    star-wars-the-old-republic-rise-of-the-rakghouls-screenshots

A few minor annoyances mar what is otherwise an outstanding use of the Star Wars license. As quick as BioWare has been to issue bug fixes, TOR is still a huge game and making everything work perfectly is going to be a never-ending uphill climb. I still encounter one or two major problems when I play that really ought to be addressed sooner rather than later.

Any time I visit the Imperial Fleet, my chosen faction’s hub, the normally great 60-100FPS that I see has a tendency to drop below 20FPS. Sometimes I even find myself looking at a slideshow. There are also frequent issues with what I can only assume to be lag; things like my avatar getting stuck firing an endless stream of blaster bolts when a battle concludes or my speeder bike not appearing beneath me as I ride it. These issues occur frequently enough that I can’t ignore them; they rarely ruin the game entirely, but I’ve definitely had to quit to the desktop more than once because the lag was too much of an issue.

Fortunately, one thing that HAS been fixed is the server load troubles. Shortly after TOR launched, players frequently found themselves sitting in queues with wait times ranging from five minutes to more than an hour just to get into a server and play the game. I haven’t had to wait in a single queue since that first week, however. The server list generally lists all servers as having a “heavy” load (which could explain the lag), but now the only waiting I’m doing is for load screens.

For any minor issues that persist, the unfolding game continues to be strong and full of fresh content to explore even after hour 100, and BioWare continues to show great commitment to serving the needs of its subscribers. If you were on the fence before, now is as good a time as any to hop off of that thing and see for yourself. In the month since it was first released, Star Wars: The Old Republic has only changed for the better.

What really hurts me is they forced to close the SWG for...this. Man , it is not even star wars. Star Wars is epic, huge, fun , dynamic... this game is about kill 15 XXXXXX and rightclick in 6 YYYY with static board decorates , soulless npc's and that annyoning theme park feeling. Use lightsabers and call the planets like the star wars ones doesn't make it star wars. Illum is the tragic expression of the fail of this game, static vehicles shooting rays who doesnt harm in a endless and pointles battle , while the players walk around like tourists... SAD

Lulz , how much EA paid for this articles? If they pay me I can say the boring 24 days I could stay at the game were amazing. If they pay me I can say that after hit level 50 there is a lot of things to do , not just reroll a alt...

I've been playing since release, and in all honesty, I can't say that SWtOR is really a huge game-changer. Some of the things- like full voice-acting and the crew skill system- is kind of new (for MMOs anyway). And as Thomas S says below, some of the cutscenes are really pretty #$%$ pointless after the first time. However, I disagree that the UI is bad- it is typical. And bugs do not abound. And the economy is steep, yes- but badly designed? No, FFXI takes that trophy by a looong shot. I'm a veteran of Final Fantasy XI, CoX, WoW (way back to vanilla WoW) and LotRO. I have seen MUCH uglier releases than tOR.Still...tOR doesn't deserve 9/10. It deserves 8 at most.

Your rating is an insane fanboi irresponsibile action that obliterates any pretence of "professionalism."

      I see you don't mention:

That despite the newness of a lvl 50 bracket for PvP, that bolstering is an absolute joke. High level players still pwn low-level players due to abilities lowbies don't have.
      Worst. Auction. House. EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The GUI remains not bad...for 2005. It is not good at all for 2012.
Running. All. Over. The. Place. Even with a speeder at lvl 25.
      Poor centralization of questing hubs.
Have to go back to space station to get daily pvp quest.

Seriously, chat for LFG? Try that if you're a new player going through zones in 4-6 months, pal.

And that's just for starters. This game really shows that Bioware knows how to do single player games, and let their arrogance assume they knoew how to do an MMO, without bothering to study MMOs at all.

For PvP, you are aware that level 50 players now queue up against only level 50 players. Of course high level players pwn low level players - how much sense would it make if that weren't the case??

For the AH, I can find what I'm looking for easily enough though their drop down menus, but something more rebust would be nice.

The GUI is fine - however they design it, someone will spout off and not like it. What they need there is customization, which will come eventually.

Running all over the place... are you one of the newer WoW players spoiled by their accelerated leveling? MMOs ALWAYS take time to explore when they are new, and for new content. It adds a bit of realism to the world, and helps to make sure you don't blast through the content in under a week. If that's a big issue for you, you should probably avoid new MMOs, and open world games like Skyrim, entirely.

Chat LFG, I agree, an auto grouping tool would be nice, especially one that's cross server.

      Unambitious.
I think that's the best way to describe it.

A cookie-cutter MMO with fancy voice-acting slapped in.
Nothing groundbreaking or innovative in any way.

      Gets boring fast.

I pre-ordered. I played in beta. I closed all my other subs to other MMOs and I went all in on SWTOR.

I canceled my subscription yesterday. Not because of the bugs (and let's be honest, there are tons of them), not because of the lag (its expected for a new game) and not because of the broken end-game raids that arent allowing users to loot, no I did not cancel for any of these reasons. (Although each is a perfectly legitimate reason to cancel)

I canceled because there is absolutely no customer service. After placing over 20 tickets across 3 characters not a single one of them was responded to or resolved. Every single ticket was closed without resolution. Bugs I reported 4 months ago in beta are still active.

I can abide bugs and broken functionality. These things happen. What this dude cannot abide, is a total and flagrant disregard of its customers who are using the resources provided to get support and receiving absolutely none. Things can be broken, but at least be there to make good for the customers.

The game had a lot of potential, and apparently a $300M development budget, yet EA/Bioware failed on the most basic of features that any business operating in America incorporates with their products and services: they failed to provide customer support.

As a customer who paid every single month for 6 years to play WoW, that grew up in Yoda Pajamas and went to every Star Wars movie on opening day, spent over $500 on upgrades to his computer to play, pre-ordered the game months in advance and closed all his other accounts, it is mind boggling that the thing that drove me away from the game was a lack of customer service. But it did, and of all the problems this game has (and there are so many to name) the easiest fix out of all of them is hiring a bunch of college kids to sit at a computer and provide assistance to customers. And they failed, miserably, to do that.

I refuse to pay for that. Apparently so are hundreds of thousands of other people because the day before paid subscriptions were going to be due, Bioware sent an email to all its users saying they will get a free in-game "title" for renewing their subscription. Apparently to try and retain users who have been leaving just like me.

Sure, they are releasing more content. Thats awesome. But the game doesnt need more content when the content already live is not functioning properly. And they certainly dont need to send emails to everyone for a "Free Title with Subscription", they need to work on retaining their existing customers by providing support and showing them they care enough to actually respond to them when they request help BECAUSE of the bugs in the game.

Ive been through worse launches and stayed...why? Because the companies communicated with me, gave free days, and had support reps there when I did run into problems and bugs in the game. Bioware could have thousands of more bugs in the game and I would still be playing...if only they had responded to my customer service tickets.

Every person I played with that had submitted tickets had this exact same experience. This game was made for guys just like me and it seemed like Bioware just didnt care about retaining customers like me.

If you want an accurate rating for this game you should go to Metacritic. This reviewer's gushing comments are not indicative of how most people feel about this game. Not that it is bad by any stretch but 9/10 is out of whack with the rest of the world.

I loved the first two TOR titles. I really want SW:TOR to be good.

But I have a problem paying $60+ just to purchase the game and then having to pay $15+ PER MONTH to play it. Make the game free to buy and I might get in on it. Give me a year of service for free when I buy and maybe I'll get in on it. But paying for the privilege to pay more? Not so much, thanks.

Sorry, MMO's aren't for you then. This is the way they have run since the very beginning. I guess you can try GW2 when it comes out?

If it had a better combat system like ddo or AoC maybe I would have liked it.

Sorry tried it and for me it was the most boring mmo since wow
    • Luke  •  4 mths ago
Played some beta, enjoyed it. Played some more beta after it went live and not so much. I refuse to pay $15 a month to test a game that was forced out long before it should have been. 9/10 is laughable

I am very sorry but this is a pretty buggy game... I cancelled after two weeks and didn't even bother playing the last week. Also some would say too many Jedi ruined SWG, SWTOR takes this to a whole new level. And you never call anywhere home as you are shuffled down a experience corridor from planet to planet, you never stay anywhere long enough. Everything takes forever too, loading screens galore that have bars that don't seem to move correctly, they just sit there for minutes... And command delays, you fire off an attack and it can sometimes take a second or two. No auto attack on your basic attack so you have to keep mashing the keys too. You also need to target the mobs and your companion keeps getting in the way of everything and does not have click through. I have only touched on the number of bugs....

Hmm ... as you said you're a noob. So writing a review of an MMO without knowing anything about MMOs in market makes this review meaningless. And a score of 9/10 is just clueless.
Bugs abound, UI is bad and NOT scaleable which means if u run a large monitor at high resolution it is microscopic, the way to find a group - via chat - is about the worst of any MMO today, the auction house - engine of an MMO's economy is so badly designed it's unreal, guild management is rudimentary, no guild bank to share resources, and on it goes ... not even counting the lag issues and very long load screens - of which there are also way too many. And couldn't they put spaceports on all planets - 4 gratuitous loadscreens just to run through a space dock without anything on there.
Like many others I was enthusiastic and had my 1st character at lvl 50 rather quickly. I was very bored with WoW, but have to say I ended up going back to it, because even with the ridiculous lore and everything same old - it still works so much better that the user experience doesn't even really compare.

This game needs another year in development. Unfortunately since EA is involved they needed to push out this incomplete game cause they wanted to make money now. All the blind fanboi sycophant's would buy a piece of crap if you stuck a Star Wars Sticker on it. PVP is awful the graphics are awful, they show hi res images on the advertising but your can't set the game to the same high graphics. The space portion of the game is a insult a crappy rail system shooter. The ship you get is worthless its just a instance between instances nothing more. The full voice acting gets old I find my self pressing the space bar cause I'm sick of the over the top explanations of these dumb simple quests which are the same in every mmorpg. The light and dark options are pointless and don't really make sense a dark corrupted Jedi is called a sith. I'm sure all the other Jedi would look at you funny once they not only sense your connection to the dark side but I can see it as well. PLEASE !
