Starbucks CEO Leads Boycott of Campaign Donations, Gets My Vote for President

COMMENTARY | I never cared too much for double mocha grande lattes, but Starbucks Corp. CEO Howard Schultz is quickly making me a fan of their corporate policy. In the spirit of teamwork. Schultz has announced an initiative to withhold all campaign contributions until Congress and the president agree on a long-term debt and deficit plan. There was an immediate show of support, with over 100 businesses signing on to withhold contributions, according to Yahoo! News.

Signers include representatives and CEOs from JC Penney, the NYSE, Whole Foods, AOL, and billionaire investor Pete Peterson. Schultz issued an internal memo earlier this month expressing his concerns over our government's lack of cooperation. It has been only 10 days since Schultz issued the campaign donation boycott pledge Aug. 15, but it has already triggered a groundswell of support from citizens and corporations alike.

According to the Center for Responsive Politics, Schultz has donated approximately $100,000 over the past 15 years, almost all of it to Democratic candidates and committees. Since corporate CEOs are known for their capitalist tendencies, cooperation among the different companies shows a real propensity for bipartisan action.

This initiative is the kind of idea that gets thrown around often at barber shops and family gatherings but is rarely seen enacted by business leaders. I liken it to a tree that has grown so big it threatens to blot out the sun, but is now being starved of its food source. It is clear to anyone who isn't nailed to the ground on one side of the party line or the other that Democrats and Republicans are the North and South of the new millennium. They disagree just to keep from agreeing and deprive our country of any substantial progress just because the other party might derive some credit for it.

My chief concern with overwhelming support of this initiative is the campaign promises that could potentially be made to less than ethical donors who will no doubt fill the void left by traditional donors affiliated with corporations. I don't believe that either party will budge, even if campaign funding slows to a trickle. There will always be special interest groups and individuals who lack the moral compass of Schultz that would love to take advantage of the situation.

To take it one step further, I would like to see all the donors who pledge to boycott political contributions donate the money that is earmarked for donation to a fund that will be used to pay off our debt. Our national debt has become such an overbearing problem that running on the platform of donating your campaign contributions to the IRS could possibly get you elected president. To be frank, the debt is just a massive elephant in the room; and this elephant is in a blood feud with jackasses.

Let’s break down this “grandstanding” by Howard Schultz. He “turned around” Starbucks by laying off thousands of employees in 08-09’. At the same time Schultz made $1.2M from Starbucks and a total of over $21M annually. Good for him!!! If you look at his quotes they are quite ambiguous and akin to “Hope and Change”. What does he mean by “end partisan gridlock”? or “focus like a laser” on creating jobs? Seems like all the cool kids (Whole Foods Market, AOL, etc..) are just picking up on the opinion polls posted on every news website showing a dismal congressional approval rating below 20%. It’s not hard to pick up that stick and beat up lawmakers now is it? Back to his statements…what do they mean? How does the Government “create” jobs? Answer: They don’t! The US government creates NOTHING. The only way jobs are going to be created is by the Government getting out of the way of the “Market”. Making the US business friendly. Solution: Lower taxes, do away with ridiculous regulations on business that are compounding on an astonishing (factor of 4 on an annual basis) rate. We The People at the same time, need to stop looking for a handout or for health care or for retirement security. Grow up!! Be accountable for your own financial means! Get off the entitlement tit!! The “partisan gridlock” is fundamental to the checks and balances of our constitutional republic. The only way to change that is to change the makeup of the representatives we elect as “We The People”. How about we as a people step up and do our part in this constitutional republic and not be party to the “tyranny of the majority” that has been forced on us by this administration. Thank God we no longer have a “majority” in the House and Senate! Can’t wait for 2012

If you like to pay high taxes, please do not read this. If you like to see the USA to keep going down, please do not read this. If you like that some large companies make huge profits and don't pay any taxes, please read this. If you want America to get out of the hole they are in, please read this.

Half of all expenses a typical business in the US pays for is wrapped up in wages and benefits.

We pay over 200 different taxes in the USA, half of all our wages in one way or another gets eaten up by that. Some studies put that figure at up to 70%. Think about that for a moment, our governments can't even balance their budgets, yet they are taking half or better of what we make - that's nuts.

Small businesses is hit just as hard by the tax man, yet there are some big companies that make a billion dollars in profit and don't pay a dime in taxes.

How can we compete, let alone economically survive in the long run under those conditions? Obviously something has to give.

I have an idea that will scare the pants off of big business, yet can help us survive and also help keep jobs in the USA.

      Semi nationalize big business.

The government would own half of each big business, thus share in the profits, help reduce the tax burden on the people, help keep jobs and the those big companies in the USA and also help regulate them through self regulation.

The government would buy half the shares of big business stock, sit on the board, help make decisions along with the private sector and thus everyone would would benefit.

It would also help keep one of the most vital parts of capitalism very much alive, competition. Thus assuring creativity and innovation.

It would not be a perfect system, no system is, but obviously the way we are doing business now is broken, so it is time we take the bull by the horns and change the way we do business.
It is a lot more complicated than this, but some of the good things about this idea is it would help eliminate the need for lobbying, much of our regulations and expenses that go along with that, make sure that big business pays its fair share (there would be no need for taxes), and probably help reduce our wages and benefit costs. It would be a check and balance system where the private sector and the people would be equally represented.

We have a lot of problems in the USA, but instead of pointing fingers and not coming up with anything other than nothing, here is a start.

You are a FOOL. You don't know what Howard Schultz really is. You want him for president? He's the devil. He doesn't care about anyone. And his idea is ineffective.
