    New Startup UmeNow Hits Back at Sites that Hide Privacy with Complexity

    None of the social networking giants provide simplicity when it comes to real privacy. You need a GPS device and a law degree to figure out what to do and what it means. UmeNow declares 2012 The Year of Privacy Made Simple.

    "As a company, we were inspired by Steve Jobs and his idea that everything should be simple to use. Free flowing. Privacy is no exception. Our upcoming "Privacy Made Simple" grassroots campaign is all about this belief. We see that none of the social networking giants provide simplicity when it comes to real privacy. You need a GPS device and a law degree to figure out what to do and what it means," says Evelyn Castillo-Bach, the outspoken privacy advocate known as Privacy Mom and founder of UmeNow, a private network that has banned all tracking. "And even after you think you figured it out, you find out that all the while they were leaking out your most private details to advertisers and companies that make apps and games," says Castillo-Bach, who is also the founder of GoCNCN.com -- Collegiate Nation, a private network exclusively for college students that has banned all ads, tracking, and third party apps.

    "Privacy Made Simple is all about eliminating the bs privacy games played by sites that are funded by Wall Street and hedge funds. Privacy should be something you're either getting or not," says Castillo-Bach, who is quick to add: "Billions of dollars are being made by companies who benefit only when they don't provide true privacy. Instead of Occupy Wall Street people should Occupy Palo Alto, California and places like that," says Castillo-Bach, who is based in South Florida.

    Castillo-Bach earned her M.S. in 1993 from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. She cautioned college students against posting on public sites in a recent televised interview on ABC from Miami.

Collegiate Nation -- also known as GoCNCN.com-- launched in late 2009 and was reviewed by Read Write Web and the New York Times in 2010.
