‘State Religion’: Bloomberg Defends NYC Policy Evicting Dozens of Churches From Public School Buildings

The story surrounding the New York City church ban is an intriguing one. The Blaze has extensively covered the ongoing drama between faith leaders and the city's Department of Education -- the latter of which has worked fervently to prevent churches from renting weekend space in its public school buildings.

Following years of legal battles and a refusal on the part of the U.S. Supreme Court to hear the case, the ban on church use of the buildings has now gone into effect, leaving dozens of community houses of worship without a location to meet.

While faith leaders lament the decision and fear for gangs, the hungry and others in need throughout the communities they serve, Mayor Michael Bloomberg is standing by the ruling. Citing religious freedom and the separation of church and state, he used his weekly radio address to reiterate his stance on the matter.

"Someday the religion that the state picks as the 'state religion' might not be yours," Bloomberg said. "The way to solve that is to not have a state religion."

    NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg

But critics claim that the ban, which took effect Feb. 12, will amount to a loss of service for needy communities, a decrease in congregant attendance and church closures as the result of unaffordable rental rates. New York City is known for its high costs, which could pose serious barriers for these houses of worship as they struggle for survival.

"You're talking about thousands and thousands of people who are being forced out of their worship spaces," explained Rev. Jon Storck, pastor of Grace Fellowship Church -- a house of worship that has been meeting in Public School 150 in Sunnyside, Queens, for years.

"We’re maintaining a positive faith, because we believe God has a plan for us," adds Pastor Rick Del Rio of Abounding Grace.

Watch Del Rio, his son, Jeremy, and New York City Councilman Fernando Cabrera discuss the church ban on GBTV this past Friday:

Having essentially exhausted their efforts in the courts (although Jordan Lorence of the Alliance Defense Fund has filed for a new injunction against the policy and may appear in federal court on Tuesday), churches and activists are working with city and state lawmakers to try and overturn the ban. Last Monday, the New York State Senate passed a bill that would rectify the situation. But in order to turn the proposal into law, the Assembly must also pass it and Gov. Andrew Cuomo will need to sign it into law.

The state has not moved fast enough, though, to prevent eviction. Next Sunday, the churches will have nowhere to go for worship. At the moment, each pastor is working fervently to secure alternative locations. In the end, the faith leaders and their congregations will meet anywhere they can -- even on the sidewalk if there's nowhere else for them to come together.

Despite all of the chaos, the Department of Education joins Bloomberg in remaining stuck on its stance.

"Our view is that public school buildings, which are funded by taxpayers' dollars, should not be used as houses of worship or to subsidize worship," said spokeswoman Marge Feinberg.

So it seems the ban is now in the hands of state politicians.

I bet the same people who think churches should keep getting handouts and free spaces to make their profits also like to #$%$ about the "entitlement class"

Maybe now the Department of Education can work fervently to educate New York's children.

Here's Blommie's complete quote, not just the chopped off part that the Blaze claims he said: "This is the last Sunday that these religious organizations will be able to have worship services in the schools. We're not trying to take away their ability to use public property for other kinds of activities. "

Got that? Boy scouts, AA , food pantry, used clothes donations, all the non-religious functions...all OK.
    • Michael  •  3 mths ago
I'm sure all New Yorkers will sleep better tonight knowing that Bloomberg has protected them from those churches who were "renting weekend space in its public school buildings".
    • DCL  •  3 mths ago
Bloomberg is confused. If a church pays rent for facility use, that is not the state endorsing religion, that is the state doing business with religion (or anyone else who can wants to rent after school hours)
    • kissmyb52  •  3 mths ago
Do not allow any other organization, i.e. Girls Scouts, Boy Scouts, NAACP, Gay & Straight Alliance, Jewish League and so forth to use the school. It will be for school purposes ONLY.
      • Grace 3 mths ago
Do not allow any other RELIGIOUS organization to use the school, would be consistent. He didn't say schools should only be used for school purposes. He said tax payer dollars should not be used to fund/subsidize religious meetings.
      • Just Me, Richard 3 mths ago
Tax payer dollars should not be used to fund/subsidize any special interest group. Either include religious groups or exclude everyone else -- paying rent puts everyone on an equal footing.
      • Edward 3 mths ago
So the Unions which rent space on weekends are OK with Grace. They sure do need to get subsidized. If they didn't get low rent space in city schools why the take home pay of the Union bosses would be reduced - or, more likely, the amount they divert to political contributions without the agreement of the members would be less.

So these churches have been renting weekend space in its public school buildings for years and it appears no 'state religion' has been established yet. Have any citizens been dragged off the street and forced to join these churches? Then, what exactly is he afraid of?

        Not getting re-elected.

Bloomberg is a job creator you heathen! How dare you speak lowly of the King! The churches should contact established churches to use their space for a nominal fee

He cannot get re elected because of term limits.

Does Bloombut know that Thomas Jefferson used to attend services in the US Captiol building. God please help us from our public servants.
      • Cindy B 3 mths ago
You do know that Jefferson did not believe in the divinity of Jesus, right? And that he questioned the existence of God?
      • Big Leo 3 mths ago
The point is that he attended religious services in the Capitol building and found no problem with it. Whether your Deist hero is a hypocrite or not is not our business or problem, but yours.
      • Richard 3 mths ago
Yes, I know he was a unitarian. The Jefferson Bible he put together to teach the moral principles of Jesus and not to evangelize. He did believe that if people thought they had a revelation, it was okay with him. And he believed that the government was not to make laws establishing nor prohibiting. So ur just as dogmatic as those whose world view is entirely different than urs and Jefferson was okay with that.

If religious groups or any group are paying for the use of space in those buildings how is that a subsidy? Also, wouldn't taxpayers benefit by rents collected from those groups? It's hard to imagine any government turning away easy revenue like that.

"Our view is that public school buildings, which are funded by taxpayers' dollars, should not be used as houses of worship or to subsidize worship," said spokeswoman Marge Feinberg.
APPARENTLY Marge Feinberg is unaware that congregants are TAXPAYERS too, not to mention the additional FINANCIAL funding that churches give to community services that feed, house and clothe many. Church congregation ALSO pay rent just as all of the other charitable institutions, agencies and organization does. Mayor Bloomberg defends NYC POLICY... shouldn't "policy" be recognized by the "voice of the people". NEW YORK CITY is run by $$$, and definitely NOT the people.... let's just stop with the bogus posturing Feinberg! You're really upholding the wishes of the $$$ backers that fill your pockets and re-election hopes...

As long as the opportunity to use space is freely accessible to all faiths, where is the endorsement of any particular religion as a "state religion"? I knew I did something right in leaving NYC, but the ridiculously high cost of living wasn't the only thing that drove me away.
    • John Hardrock  •  Atlantic Beach, Florida  •  3 mths ago
if they pay full rent !!! great!!!! that reduces the tax expense for running the school. if not then throw them out.

Like Barack Obama, Mother Bloomberg is a nanny state, government-knows-best ideologue. It would be nice if he applied the critical thinking he employed in amassing his personal fortune in the business world to the cockeyed decisions he regularly makes as as the chief Executive of New York City.

If he did, he'd be able to see that, far from endorsing a "state religion," the NYC Board of Education makes its facilities available to ANY religious organization for their very worthwhile community programs when these facilities are not being used for their regular purpose. The reason that Bloomberg can't think straight when it comes to governing is, ironically, his blind adherence to secular humanism which is for him his secular religion.
    • DRight  •  3 mths ago
Will Cuomo who is Catholic stand with these small independent churches? Or will he see it as an opportunity to wipe them out. Which is contrary to the other side of the Constitution; where the Federal Government is prohibited from creating or hindering the free exercise of religion Those rights not enumerated in the Constitution are reserved to the states and their respective citizens. Schools don't belong to the Federal Government, they are taxed locally. Any money that is derived comes from the citizens. The fact is the US Government is broke, it has no money, and if they keep this up it will only cause people to trust them less.
    • Dave  •  3 mths ago
It's almost unbelievable, how our own "corrupt" government will not allow it's own citizens to worship freely (even though it's fully guaranteed by the Constitution)...yet they cite "freedom of religion" in allowing the mosque to be built on ground zero, and seem to have "no problem" with allowing muslims to worship there...
Furthermore, the rent money these "churches" pay, goes toward funding our already underfunded public school system, and helping to pay the building's utility bills, etc.
There's something "seriously wrong" with the overall picture here...

Whether you believe in religion and worship or not, we are all tax payers...and this is just more evidence, and yet another good example, of way too much government control in our lives...not to mention, government waste.

Instead of throwing our own churches out into the streets, they should be collecting their rent money...and that of any other organization that would seek to rent these public buildings on a weekend/daily basis...especially since they are standing empty anyway.
That is only good business practice, as it would be beneficial to both sides.

For these reasons alone...if the churches, the boy scouts, the girl scouts, alcoholics anonymous, FFA, FHA, 4H, or any other misc clubs and organizations want to rent space in these buildings on the weekends, it should be allowed...even if condoned.

It is simply ridicules that these public buildings should be setting empty, when there is a useful purpose they could serve...and while they could also be producing revenue.

Our tax dollars could be used so much more efficiently, and in so many better ways, if it wasn't for all the senseless and wasteful government bureaucracy in this country.

Bloomberg is a schmuck. I wonder what his answer would be if some Muslim group asked to meet in the schools. Why do I think I know the answer?
    • OsirisDragon  •  3 mths ago
...because the last thing poor neighborhood schools could use is some additional rental revenue....
    • Tom  •  Pleasanton, California  •  3 mths ago
If they are paying rent like non-religious entities for the use of the space, how does that violate the First Amendment? Very strange.

wow you libs are something else i suppose ,the hollywood elite and all libs will be inviting the homeless to come stay with them and feed them every night and provide shelter they need or what about when a family dont have enough food for month because the food stamps they were getting ,gets lowered and they need to go to church for food to help get by,the church does more good than bad for the poor for sure i know ,because ive been poor all my life
    • Robert Allen  •  3 mths ago
fine then churches should tell them to get bent when the local government wants to use a church building as a polling place or when the dems and republicans want a church to endorse a candidate . personal to bloomberg ,shove it
