NEW YORK, May 8, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, Delaware Governor Jack Markell signed HB 35, bipartisan legislation that includes comprehensive and enforceable background checks on the private sales of all firearms except shotguns. Mayors Against Illegal Guns Co-Chair and New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, along with Delaware mayors, issued the below statements.

Mayors Against Illegal Guns Co-Chair and New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg

"After more than 40 U.S. Senators shirked their responsibility to protect the American people by voting against comprehensive background checks, Delaware stepped up and made reform a reality at the state level. I thank Governor Markell and Delaware's lawmakers for passing commonsense legislation that will help save lives.  Even as Washington refuses to take action against gun violence, this is the latest example of how states are leading the way."

Wilmington Mayor Dennis P. Williams: "By passing comprehensive gun reform legislation, Governor Markell and Delaware's legislators stood with the overwhelming majority of Americans who have demanded action to help save lives. Members of Congress may have failed America with their vote against life-saving background checks last month, but I'm proud that Delaware is putting our citizens' safety ahead of the Washington gun lobby. We have a lot more work to do, but today we took a step in the right direction."

Middletown Mayor Kenneth Branner: "Congress should take a lesson from Delaware. Our legislature listened to the will of Delaware residents and crafted a bi-partisan bill that will help stop gun violence and save lives, without infringing on Second Amendment rights. These common-sense background checks are proof that both sides of the aisle can come together to responsibly reduce crime."
