Stella McCartney shakes up fashion show

LONDON (AP) — Stella McCartney shook up the fashion world Saturday night by using a flash mob approach for a presentation of her evening wear.

Instead of a traditional catwalk show, McCartney invited 100 or so of her closest friends for dinner — she was flanked by Vogue editor Anna Wintour and the singer Rihanna, with model Kate Moss close by — and sat at her table applauding when the models emerged unannounced from the dinner crowd dressed in gorgeous evening wear.

They danced on tables, were passed around on chairs held high — almost as if it was a traditional Jewish wedding — and gyrated to raucous music for a brief six or seven minutes, then went up on stage to be joined by the designer.

It was an impressive break with tradition, with the models following a magic show that saw TV personality Alexa Chung apparently suspended in mid-air. The festivities followed a hoity-toity sitdown dinner that featured a live band in tuxedos playing traditional jazz tunes.

McCartney's unorthodox contribution to London Fashion Week seemed to strike a chord, even if it was hard to gauge the sexy, lacy and tight evening wear her models were wearing for their brief spotlight stint. The dresses looked beautifully made and colorful, but it was difficult to judge each one as they swirled by.

"It was a good idea, and she made it work," said former model Bianca Jagger, wearing a signature white suit. "It was nice to see something different, something dramatic. The clothes looked great. And the food was delicious."

The menu included duck with black truffles, chestnuts and Jerusalem artichokes, beetroots with Sicilian blood oranges, saffron risotto, and Wigmore cheese with still more black truffles, along with a variety of wines and Veuve Clicquot champagne.

It was a rare London appearance for McCartney, who usually shows her designs in Paris. She was joined at the head table by Rihanna, wearing a dramatic dark green full-length gown with a deeply plunging neckline, and Wintour, who wore a more demure dark dress.

Rihanna's many admirers said she had styled herself after the young Tina Turner.

After the show, an exuberant McCartney declined to give any details about her designs for Britain's Olympic team uniforms, which have not yet been revealed.

"It's a big secret," she said.

Why would she turn to sports gear after a successful career selling gowns, cocktail dresses, lingerie and perfume?

"Because I'm British and it's a huge honor for me," she said.

Stella has been designing for years and making her own way, niether her mother or father were willing to spoon feed her. I wish people would do research before they whined about other peoples success.

Please. AS IF anyone could ignore her patronym.

Of course you can't ignore her name!! She is probably the most famous of all her siblings ---- for now. Her brother just recorded his first album and his quite talented. At least, the McCartney kids weren't made famous because of (1) big #$%$ (as in Kardashian) (2) short marriages (3) drug and alcohol addiction (4) stints in rehab (5) boring reality shows (6) and being general #$%$

If she had not been talented, she would have failed--spectacularly-BECAUSE of her name.

I absolutely love how she's made such a big name for herself and is highly respected for what SHE does, not her parents.

Having only seen what TV shows, most of her high-style is pretty good. If I could afford it, I would buy it. As for her name, she would NOT have continued with her top level designs and be as high in the fashion world if she did not have talent. You can certainly tell that most of the commenters here don't have the money for the creations, aren't in the lifestyle (financially/socially) as most of her customers and are just jealous of her talent. As for the styles, everything is returning to the formats of the 70's style for the next few seasons. If you are truly old enough to have worn the styles and lived in the 70s, you would know this. I personally liked many of the 70's styles (as I was there then and know what they were). Much of those styles were based on very classic lines which are still usable for the 'new' styles of today. As for her parents, if anyone is old enough, they both worked hard for what is there and you don't see Paul's children in the fishwrappers going to jail, having drunken parties, or any of that. They don't appear or act spoiled as many commenters are saying. They work for a living and in fields that are very hard to get into and stay in. So maybe some of the American commenters could take a lesson from Mr. McCartney's ways of parenting!

Paul and Linda raised their kids quite normally considering who they were. And it shows. ALL of them are talented and you NEVER hear or ever heard anything bad about them. James McCartney was on David Letterman a couple of weeks ago. Other than him having his Mom's hair coloring, he looks very much like his Dad......and he can sing!!!

I have seen some of Stella's designs in the past and she does do clothes for normal everyday wear. And if we could afford it, for normal women. I think I remember her saying in an interview years ago that a lot of her designs for day wear and such she patterned after things her Mom would wear. The clothes I've seen on her celebrity friends I really like; nothing is outlandish.

She's a great designer. I'd love her clothes, even if I didn't know her Daddy. You go, Stella!

I was relieved that Paul's name didn't appear in this article. She deserves to stand alone. Way to go, Stella!

Is she any relation to Bill McCartney who used to be the head football coach at Colorado?

Good for Stella!! I've always liked her designs.

NOTE to a bunch of the posters here: You obviously know NOTHING about Stella McCartney or the McCartneys. So don't try to add into the conversation because even though we are few and far between on here, we KNOW more about Stella McCartney & Family then any of you so quit with the vegan stuff, she wouldn't have made it without her name, etc etc etc. If you know so much - how many brothers and sisters does she have? What do they do? You all know she is half-American and can carry a U.S. passport.

I thought Stella was a vegan. Why were they serving duck for dinner?
      • Dot 3 mths ago
Who said she is a vegan? Her father is, her Mom was and she obviously was raised as one and maybe she still is. If she still is, I admire her for not pushing her eating habits on guests. Being raised a vegan doesn't mean you have to stay one for the rest of your life.

Oh yeesh, she is designing for their Olympic team? Her attempts to outfit tennis player Wozniacki have been mostly disastrous -- ill-fitting and unflattering. I hope she has figured out how to design sportswear by now. Poor British athletes!

Sounds creative and I wish her luck. However, I am surprised she was at a dinner where they served duck. I thought she was a vegetarian.
