Stephen Moyer and Katey Sagal Will Headline Kurt Sutter's FX Drama The Bastard Executioner

Stephen Moyer is no stranger to fake blood, and that familiarity will likely serve him well in his next gig. The former True Blood star has landed a lead role in Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter's FX drama The Bastard Executioner. Sutter himself and Sons of Anarchy vet Katey Sagal will also appear.

According to the network, the period piece "tells the story of a warrior knight in King Edward I's charge who is broken by the ravages of war and vows to lay down his sword. But when that violence finds him again he is forced to pick up the bloodiest sword of all."

Soooo, it's Sons of Anarchy but with period costumes? I can dig it.

Here's the full cast list so far, complete with character descriptions:

Moyer as Milus Corbett: One of Ventris's** marshals in the army, the street-smart and noble-savvy Corbett now serves as Ventris's Chamberlain, Chancellor, and Justiciar.

Sagal as Annora of the Alders: The former Sons of Anarchy matriarch will reinvent herself as a beautiful and mystical woman who offers predictions, cures, and potions.

Sutter as the Dark Mute: Possibly the spiritual ancestor to his Sutter's Sons of Anarchy character Otto, the Dark Mute is the mate and guardian of Annora who speaks only rarely. No one has ever seen his face.

Flora Spencer-Longhurst as Baroness Lowry 'Love' Aberffraw Ventris: As cunning as she is kind and beautiful, the baroness comes from a wealthy Welsh family. She married Ventris** at 17 to protect her family's land, but finds that her noble duties are constantly in conflict with her Welsh pride.

Lee Jones as Wilkin Brattle: A former knight in King Edward's army, Wilkin is described as tall, dark, and imposing, as well as emotionally deep and spiritually tortured. He's trying to live a simple agrarian life.

Sam Spruell (The Hurt Locker) as Toran Prichard: Wilkin's best friend, Toran was once a fierce and tenacious archer under Madog Llywelyn in the last major Welsh rebellion, but traded in his bow for the hoe.

Darren Evans (Galavant) as Ash y Goedwig: Ash is "of the woods," whatever that means. He's a wiry and smart orphan who's friends with Wilkin.

Danny Sapani (Penny Dreadful) as Berber the Moor: Described as a "large, educated man," Berber is a converted Muslim and farmer. He's also a friend of Wilkin.

Timothy V. Murphy as Father Ruskin: A former soldier, Ruskin left the army for the seminary and is described as both brawny and gentle. The only problem is that he bottles up his fury.

Sarah White as Isabel Kiffin: Isabel is Lady Love's handmaiden and trusted confidant. She's tall, slight, awkward, and innocent.

Sarah Sweeny as Jessamy Maddox: Hardened by abuse, Jessamy is the executioner's wife.

Matthew Rhys (The Americans) as Gruffudd y Blaidd: Rhys will guest-star as a smart and fearless figure known as the Wolf.

**Ventris himself wasn't actually listed or described in FX's press release. Perhaps he's the titular executioner?
