Steve Jobs' Estranged Father Never Got Phone Call He Waited For

Steve Jobs' estranged father, who had given up his infant son for adoption, had been hoping that his grown son would call him. That hope died today.

Abdulfattah John Jandali had emailed his son a few times in a tentative effort to make contact. The father never called the son because he feared Jobs would think the dad who had given him up was now after his fortune.

And Jobs never responded to his father's emails.

"I really don't have anything to say," Jandali, vice president at Boomtown Hotel Casino in Reno, Nev., told the International Business Times.

Jandali, a Syrian immigrant, had been quoted by the New York Post recently saying he didn't know until just a few years ago that the baby he and his ex-wife, Joanne Simpson, gave up grew to be Apple's CEO.

Jandali told the Post that had it been his choice, he would have kept the baby. But Simpson's father did not approve of her marrying a Syrian, so she moved to San Francisco to have the baby alone and give him up for adoption.

    Steve Jobs Secretive Private Life

Jandali, who is 80, said at the time that he would have been happy to just have a cup of coffee with the son he never knew before it was too late. Stories of Jobs' battle with a form of pancreatic cancer and his liver transplant were public and Jobs' health had deteriorated to the point where he was forced to resign as CEO of Apple.

He was quoted as saying, "This might sound strange, though, but I am not prepared, even if either of us was on our deathbeds, to pick up the phone to call him."

Though he was one of the world's most famous CEOs, Steve Jobs has remained stubbornly private about his personal life, ignoring the media and the public's thirst for knowledge about him ever since he co-founded Apple Computer in 1976.

He was so successful at keeping the details of his life out of the celebrity pages that a Pew poll in June 2010 found that only 41 percent of Americans correctly identified Jobs as head of Apple. A CBS poll that year concluded that 69 percent of Americans didn't know enough about Jobs to have an opinion about him.

Jobs personal life was a story of extremes. Given up for adoption, he created a worldwide giant of a company in his garage, dated movie stars, and had a child out of wedlock who he denied for many years.

Many fans know that Jobs and his wife, Laurene Powell, have been married for more than 20 years; the two were married in a small ceremony in Yosemite National Park in 1991, live in Woodside, Calif., and have three children: Reed Paul, Erin Sienna, and Eve.

Less well-known are the other members of his family. He has a daughter, Lisa Brennan Jobs, born in 1978 with his high school girlfriend, Chris Ann Brennan.

His sister is Mona Simpson, the acclaimed writer of books like "Anywhere But Here." Jobs did not meet Simpson until they were adults, when he was seeking information on his birth parents. Simpson later wrote a book based on their relationship. In the book, "A Regular Guy," Simpson shed light on Jobs's relationship with Brennan and his daughter, Lisa.

Fortune magazine reported that Jobs denied paternity of Lisa for years, at one point swearing in a court document that he was infertile and could not have children. According to the report, Chris Ann Brennan collected welfare for a time to support the child, until Jobs later acknowledged Lisa as his daughter.

The college dropout was a millionaire by the age of 25 and on the cover of Time by 26. By 30, he was starting a second company, NeXT.

During those years, though, Jobs also lived an exciting personal life. He also began a relationship with singer Joan Baez, according to Elizabeth Holmes, a friend and classmate. In "The Second Coming of Steve Jobs," Holmes tells biographer Alan Deutschman that Jobs broke up with his serious girlfriend to "begin an affair with the charismatic singer-activist." Holmes confirmed these details to ABC News.

Deutschman's book also says Jobs went on a blind date with Diane Keaton; went out with Lisa Birnbach, author of "The Preppy Handbook;" and hand delivered computers to celebrities he admired.

Only God Know what his true motives were but whatever the case Steve jobs did something for Computing that Mother Teresa did for poverty Give hope.We can judge his father or his social life but we can judge the amount of work he put in giving us his innovations.I think Steve was a survivor of not letting his body become weak,.RIP Steve for giving us PC.

If is not for Jobs' parents (Jandali & Joanne Simpson) complicated relationship, there will not be an adoption by Paul & Clara Jobs. If there is no adoption, there may be no apple. If there is no apple, you may not get to experience the iphone technology.
Some says the credit should goes to the real parents, & some sided with Paul & Clara.
That's the Law of the universe, which created a much bigger picture that few can see.
Think about it, every cause will have its effect for a reason. Just go with the flow...

Bunch of judgmental dumb pricks on here who never met or knew Steve Jobs. Just like true sanctimonious Americans always do.

His reasons for not acknowledging his own daughter in the beginning are only known by him. Not feeling the need to connect with his birth father are understandable. Birth children are rejected by their birth parents all the time and are usually told not to get their hopes up once the find out who they are. Why should it be any different in the reverse? Don't condemn him for his personal decisions, they are/were his and his alone ... good and bad. It does not negate the visionary that he was or the legacy that he has left.

I can see now why Steve Jobs wanted his private life kept private--while he might have been a titan in business, personally it appears he was small and petty by denying his father and his daughter Lisa. A bigger man would have done more.
      • Teddy 7 mths ago
Well Jinx for him to be a millioanire and let his daughter be raised on tax payer money when he could afford to care for financially doesn't say a lot about him ! Yet people keep singing in his praise !
      • choochoo 7 mths ago
The "father" we're talking about here is a birthfather/sperm donor only - his real father is the one who raised him! Let's get that straight. He and his birthfather were STRANGERS folks.

You're not alone...there are many of us who have attempted to re-connect due to differences in the past...I've sworn never to turn back again.

Apple is a technology company. It was started with a technological breakthrough. It also had its biggest early success with another technological breakthrough. Those two computers were built and designed, alone, by Steve Wozniak. Steve Jobs was a visionary leader who led Apple to enormous profits and status, especially his second time around. However, don't lose sight of the fact that Woz was the brains behind the technology. And before you little brains start commenting, I'm not bagging on Steve Jobs. He was a business genius. Just don't forget the technology part and where the products that created Apple came from.
      • Joseph 7 mths ago
Yep, the real genius of Apple...Steve Wozniak.
      • Dragonflymoon 7 mths ago
I actually knew the Woz, his Mom and mine were friends, yet I never met Steve Jobs, for all that he was a "childhood friend". Steve W sat in his garage and tinkered, and invented the PC. And like Sean says, he did it alone. His Mom, Margaret, and mine would say, go see what Stevie is doing......booooooring. LOL!!! I wish I could go back in time and slap that girl. Aside from that, Steve W, has been lost for awhile I think, and had his own invention and company taken away from him. Woz was the brains, Jobs was the flamboyent. charismatic money maker.......and yes there werehis inventions. BUT, like Bill Gates, a lot of them were lifted from PARC......look it up. Xerox has been very un/undercredited in the 'invention' scheme of things.
      • Teddy 7 mths ago
Thank you ! People tend to forget that Woz was the brains of the tech behind Apple while Jobs was the pitch man ! Jobs had others create the flare of products then he went out to the world and made you want to buy them !

He didn't acknowledge his daughter. He wouldn't forgive his father. Jobs was wise to keep his personal life very private. As a famous movie star once said, "If the public really knew us, they wouldn't like us."

His first daughter, named Lisa, was born in 1978. In 1978 Jobs began work on the LISA computer (the predecessor to Macintosh) at Apple, named after his daughter. So it seems like he denied his daughter for, what, a maximum of a few months? Plus in the 70s, I don't think you could get a quick genetic test to see if someone is your child like you can now. And he accepted her later in life, presumably starting in 1978. Not sure why everyone is making a big deal out if it. Do you know Steve Jobs? Or are you quick to judge based on hearsay.
    • Steve  •  7 mths ago
It's the father's responsibility to patch up that relationship, not the child's. If he really had wanted to know his son before he died, he could have done something.
      • Dania 7 mths ago
Well Steve...the dad tried making contact with him by email several times and Steve ignored them,so that's that. I agree with you on that it was the dads obligation to take the first steps, but Steve was an adult already and it was also his choice or decision to take some steps forward himself ,but instead he decided to ignored the dad. If i was the dad i would keep going forwrd till i finally meet my boy,but thats just me and sometimes people dont react well when rejected.

I feel sorry for his daughter who he refused to accept at first. Shows he had a selfish side to him self at one time. Hope they were able to mend their lives and get to know and love one another.

In the adoption world - many times it's the parents of the pregnant, single mother, who have the biggest influence as to what happens to the baby.
    • Talledega  •  7 mths ago
How could he deny paternity after naming the first computer Lisa? Was that brought up in court or not?
    • Roms  •  7 mths ago
He could have "Forgive and Forget" and made that first move to call his pops since he was after all more rich and famous than his dad and it was his mom that gave him up for adoption not his dad. Then he turns around and did the same ugly move to his daughter. He should have broken that cycle and spend less time inventing ipods, and ipads , family should always be first.

Mr. Abdulfattah John Jandali here reflects the vulnerability of most young men who are simply just getting by and found themselves in a situation where their girlfriend is pregnant, and the girl unilaterally got abortion with little or no consultations from the boy friend. It becomes even more problematic when the woman is acting in concert with her parents. Hundreds if not thousands of foreign students are faced with this dilemma in the years before perestroika, though took place in the former Soviet Union, under the Gen Sec Gorbachev (perestroika ushered in a new level of openness and acceptance even in the United States of America) I definitely feel his loss and his sorrow.

For me here are the million dollar questions:
      (i) What if Steve had never been adopted, will he have been able to be creative to the level he had been?
(ii) Would he have met Steve Wozniak who as we all know collaborated with him in the early stages of Apple Computers?
(iii) Will there have been all these fine products --- from Apple II Computer (1984) to iPhone 4 (2011)?
(iv) What if Steve had been adopted and his adoptive parents kept his birth name with the last name "Jandali" --- would he have enjoyed the same level of success and acceptance he had with name Steve Job?
      (v) How much of his success is destiny???

This is human nature, friends. The abused often go onto abuse others. The abandoned go onto abandon. Until we deal with our pasts, we tend to do the same. We're wise not to judge Mr. Jobs. He had many personal & public successes and failures, like every other human. The inspiring thing is he turned it around and made himself a success after the rejection he must've felt from his birth parents. Steve Jobs was an overcomer. He fessed up to his daughter (who he had w/ his HIGH SCHOOL SWEETHEART). How many young 18-19 yr old guys would own up to a child w/ their first love, their ex? Not justifying, but give the man a break. I only wish for his sake he would've connected with his father. Could've healed many self-doubts and wounds he must've carried growing up.

Thank you Mr. Jobs. You were tenacious and played well the hand you were dealth. Your contribution to the world will never be forgotten.
