Stocks open mixed amid instability in Europe

NEW YORK (AP) — It's a mixed open on Wall Street as investors keep an eye on a devolving situation in Europe.

The Dow Jones industrial average is up 14 points at 13,471 in the early going. The Standard & Poor's 500 index is down a fraction of a point at 1,441 after four straight declines. The Nasdaq composite index is down four to 3,114.

In Europe, tens of thousands of protesters have taken to the streets in Athens and Madrid. They're clashing with riot police ahead of spending cuts and tax hikes.

In another sign of instability, Germany failed to raise sufficient bids for its benchmark 10-year bonds. A rush for safe investments drove average yields down to 1.52 percent.
