    Strong quake rocks northeast Japan

TOKYO (AP) — A strong earthquake has rocked northeastern Japan, which is still recovering from the devastating tsunami six months ago.

The quake Thursday had a preliminary magnitude of 5.6. There were no immediate reports of damage and no tsunami warning was issued.

The earthquake was centered off Fukushima, which was severely hit by the quake and tsunami in March that left more than 21,000 people dead or missing. Fukushima is about 150 miles (240 kilometers) northeast of Tokyo.

The March disaster touched off the worst nuclear crisis since Chernobyl, generating meltdowns, fires and explosions at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear facility.

The plant's operator said there were no signs of abnormalities at the plant from the quake on Thursday.

DID THEY EVER CONTAIN THE RADIATION LEAK??
      • Me 8 mths ago
Nope.... they can't just be contained once they go past a certian point. It was a complete meltdown just like Chernobyl. The media just stopped covering it once the news got reeeeeally bad.
      • Kif 8 mths ago
No, not at all. And, the press blackout continues. Much of Japan is uninhabitable and the magnitude of the disaster is staggering, yet we get news stories about a cat with 2 faces living to be 12.
      • Rich 8 mths ago
No. And they never will. The reactor vessels have been breached. The melted"goo" has hit the concrete floors of the buildings and apparently kept right on going down. There is highly radioactive steam coming out of crevaces around the plant. The "goo" has melted into the earth and hit the water table making this steam. This is much worst than the lying media would have us believe. We are all getting nailed with raioactive"hot particles" world wide.---NO NUKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What about us poor american's? Hurricane Irene,Katrina,All these bad tornado's.And your crying for Japan! Show's how unamerican you are!

Ok Nicki then why don't you stop reading these article's? Your saying we don't have freedom of speech? But you Athiest's think you have all the right's.Your Judgement day will arrive too.

Woudn't that still be considered an aftershock. They happen for months..
      • RedQueen 8 mths ago
It's being reported as its own quake. But you could be right and the articles just not specific enough. I'm sure it's just semantics to the Japanese, though. Bless 'em.
    • i.s.!  •  8 mths ago
sorry, "rosbo", but the only "lid" that has beeen put on the nuke plant story is the complete ineptitude of the world-wide press.
    • Anonymous  •  8 mths ago
Are you kidding me? Who is posting this news? My wife is from Sendai and have visited there 2 times since the original earthquake. They get 2 to 3 aftershocks every single day. Surprisingly where is the news on that ..... Why is posted whenever they feel like it is important but not any other times .... There is not even any other news about the power plant or other things .....

a lot of eartquakes have been happening in the ring of fire here lately
      • JJ 8 mths ago
They have been happening with about the same frequency for centuries. The only reason it seems like more now is because of the earthquake/tsunami 6 months ago. Japan has ALWAYS had daily quakes.

I've been here since 2001 and was here during the 9.0 that struck in March and I can assure you that we've had far worse than this measly 5. something...
I didn't even feel this one-and normally don't even get off the couch unless it's a 7.0 or better! LOL
      • Sublyminal 8 mths ago
Hmm, you're a #$%$ liar if you say you didn't feel a 5. something trembler.
      • Giri 8 mths ago
Nope, Jason said the truth. If you stay here in Japan, you will know how 5.x was just "oh, a quake" compare with 7.0++.
      • Jaiko 7 mths ago
I live on 8th floor in Tokyo, and I felt it twice in my sleep..it was a good shake..but I thought I was dreaming. Oh I dint want to wake..They are bigger quakes, often some people don't feel it...It all depends on where you are at the time...If you are lying or sitting you will more likely feel it vs someone travelling, or walking about....

‘Scientists don’t know why’: Cesium-137 in soil near Chernobyl has half-life of 180 to 320 years, not 30 years as is typical
“Ecological Half Life” of Cesium-137 May Be 180 to 320 Years?, EX-SKF, August 22, 2011:

      [...] From Wired Magazine (12/15/2009):

Reinhabiting the large exclusion zone around the [Chernobyl] accident site may have to wait longer than expected. Radioactive cesium isn’t disappearing from the environment as quickly as predicted, according to new research presented here Monday at the meeting of the American Geophysical Union. Cesium 137’s half-life — the time it takes for half of a given amount of material to decay — is 30 years. In addition to that, cesium-137’s total ecological half-life — the time for half the cesium to disappear from the local environment through processes such as migration, weathering, and removal by organisms is also typically 30 years or less, but the amount of cesium in soil near Chernobyl isn’t decreasing nearly that fast. And scientists don’t know why.

It stands to reason that at some point the Ukrainian government would like to be able to use that land again, but the scientists have calculated that what they call cesium’s “ecological half-life” — the time for half the cesium to disappear from the local environment — is between 180 and 320 years.

“Normally you’d say that every 30 years, it’s half as bad as it was. But it’s not,” said Tim Jannik, nuclear scientist at Savannah River National Laboratory and a collaborator on the work. “It’s going to be longer before they repopulate the area.”

Ban imports from japan. I would seriously reconsider EVER buying anything that was "Made in Japan" again. Who knows how contaminated any product might be. If they will lie to their own citizens about safety how do you think they will treat foreign consumers?

I imagine that if the "Made in Japan" brand is seriously affected that they will begin to mislabel products as "Made in China".

For example: Canon, SONY, Alpine, etc all have manufacturing facilities in Fukushima (search for it and you will see it is true). I bet they are still being used now so you know there will be contaminated products sold.

Unsafe levels of radioactive cesium, which has a half-life of about 30 years, have been detected in beef, milk, vegetables and tea leaves. Tokyo’s tap water was deemed dangerous for infants at one point. Sludge containing radioactive materials is building up at sewage facilities across Japan. And contaminants have been found in sandboxes at dozens of parks and school playgrounds in eastern Tokyo.

Government authorities insist they are taking precautions.

“We are doing our best, and counting and measuring the radiation level all the time,” says Maeko Nakabayashi, who holds a seat in Japan’s legislature for the ruling Democratic Party (DPJ). “We are extending that to every food product so that people can feel better [and] be assured that the food that they are eating is safe.”

a 5.6 is not a strong quake, its a weak one, moderate at best,

These small quakes Japan was equipped handle. However after the monster quake, their defenses are considerably weakened.

Why do earthquakes and tremors in Japan always generate the idiotic, stupid and ridiculous comments regarding Godzilla and fishing? "America....where nothing is a tragedy or unfortunate unless it happens here".

Please stop making this about religion. Japan has its share of people in their 100s. Would God not have wiped these people out a long time ago?

Back in the 1950's I went duck hunting often with my father there in the Fukushima general location, bought lots of oil paintings of the area by a local artist that hang in my home today. It's hard on my heart to remember what it was like there long ago compared to what tragic disasters have done to the region and people in recent months. Sure hope there weren't any people injured with this last quake. My thoughts are with the people of Japan as they rebuild their lives from the rubble and chaos as I gaze upon my paintings from a more happy time.

"The plant's operator said there were no signs of abnormalities at the plant from the quake on Thursday."

uhhh. Wha? This place is likely still leaking radiation from the first quake. Abnormalities are likely growing from any organism in a 50 mile radius.

"The plant's operator said there were no signs of abnormalities at the plant from the quake on Thursday."... other than the continued leakage of radiation and that the plant and the 20 mile surrounding area will be uninhabitable for decades... yes all is fine.
