    Student Suspended Over Sleeping Teacher

COMMENTARY | Students are supposed to live up to rules and standards of their school districts while teachers aren't. A substitute teacher in Mustang, Oklahoma, proved this exact theory recently.

A freshman at the local high school snapped a picture of the snoozing sub with their cell phone. Doesn't seem like a problem right? It is twofold. First students aren't supposed to have their cell phones turned on during class time. Rather than giving the said student detention or taking the phone away and calling their parents, the school suspended the student.

The student probably wouldn't have been caught taking the picture if they wouldn't have put it up on a social network site like Facebook. The sleeper got off scot-free for playing possum in class while the student was punished for taking action.

That incident leads to the next reason why this student shouldn't be suspended for their actions. In Kansas, Governor Brownback wants to post teacher evaluations on public websites. However, Kansas lawmakers disagree with the governor. While I may not agree with everything lawmakers do, Brownback may be onto something after the incident with the substitute teacher and the Mustang high school student.

This is one of the reasons students aren't learning as much as they should be in classes. Even President Obama wants teachers to be held responsible for what the kids are learning in the outline he prepared for his last State of the Union Speech. He stated, "Attract, prepare, support, and reward great teachers to help students learn." The substitute teachers actions doesn't help those who teach full-time. Nor does it help improving the image of teaching staff across the country when those who do the minimal work get away with sleeping on the job.

The substitute proved exactly what Governor Brownback and President Obama are getting to with their proposed legislative acts. The substitute must have slept through the president's SOTU address as well. Why shouldn't teachers be held to standards and accountable for their actions?

Even with the incident being investigated by the Mustang School District, the actions as of this time aren't good enough. The reason being the student is missing classes while the substitute goes on being in classrooms with kids while the regular teacher is out.

I have subbed many times and I cant imagine falling asleep in class. What was this idiot thinking? Do you know what kids can do when you are asleep? When you sub or teach you are liable for anything that happens in your class. When I did my student teaching I know several students who had cell phones. I never took them away as none of them had the phones out in class. It is a non-issue. A sub sleeping in class is an issue. Shame on the school for punishing the wrong person.
      • Emily 4 mths ago
From the other side of the classroom, I've seen kids plenty of times using their phones behind their books, or under their desk. The only times I've seen them caught is when the phone goes off.

He was training for a union teaching position of course.
      • Huey 3 mths ago
How do you know they punished the wrong person? Did you investigate the matter? Was the sub asleep or was it just some punk with a phone snapping a pic while the subs eyes were close for 2 seconds or maybe he blinked. I'm not saying he was awake because IDK- I was not there nor did I investigate the matter. Think before you write or get a job with yahoo- they will let you write w/o investigating the facts!

As an educator myself I'm appalled that there were no disciplinary actions against the teacher. That kind of teacher is the exact reason many Americans are against us. The union should be ashamed to represent her. Some teachers work so hard, and then there are others who give teaching a bad name. Unfortunately, the media only likes to mention the latter.
      • mark a 3 mths ago
You are all overpaid shills working for a corrupted greedy system. Your Union is the cause for such crap. I know that substitutes are not full time teachers, but they will be. the Union promotes bad behavior, not good. Think about how many idiots have tenure.
      • Diane 3 mths ago
Sorry, but as a teacher you should know that subs are basically babysitters for your class when you can't or won't be there. In our school district anyone with any amount of college education can be a substitute and I'm pretty sure they are not members of any teachers union. I'm sure you know that a sub will fill your spot but cannot take your place, so I hope you are at school doing your job except in cases of emergency.
      • Ed 3 mths ago
Agree Diane.. never have heard of a local union that includes the substitutes... Few of the would make enough to cover their union dues if they were members.

Does anyone see the irony in this poorly written article commenting on the state of our educational system??? There should be some semblance of editorial standards for contributor articles - basic grammar and punctuation would be a start.
      • Lou Rounick 4 mths ago
I second that. I'm guessing that much like the substitute, she had a knack for falling asleep in class.
      • timetostandup 4 mths ago
maybe she was one of the students of a teacher who went to sleep not teaching UNION

It's just par for the course for Yahoo these days.

Likely the student was suspended for causing trouble for the principal and the school district. It's politics ruling over fairness.
      • Sun 3 mths ago
        Absolutely!

Just preparing them for the rest of their life. DO NOT STAND UP TO THE GOVERNMENT, but please speak your mind your neighbor and tell us all of what they do.
      • Samson 3 mths ago
Social programming and brainwashing. The school systems today are full of politically correct thinkers that pummel "you will submit to authority" into the heads of our children. It's ok for the school admins to do whatever they want to do especially when it is wrong.

Yahoo's contributor network of "writers" highlights the failing of public education better than a substitute teacher caught sleeping during class.
      • Natalie H 4 mths ago
How do you know the writer went to a public school?
      • Jared 4 mths ago
Statistics. Odds are that most of these writers went to public school. Unless, of course, you're implying that this writer had no schooling...

The substitute was not "playing possum." Clearly this author slept through journalism school.

Would it be NORMAL to suspend a student for cell phone use in class? Would the child have been suspended if, say, there was a fire blocking the classroom from getting out and they called for help? Now the child becomes hero possibly? On the flip side, a student catches someone doing something dangerous (teacher sleeping in class) and is punished? How is the teacher sleeping dangerous? Because teachers are responsible for the safety of children during their time at school - that's why. The administration is #$%$ out of embarrassment, well shame on them for not owning up. I suppose this group will also attack a gun owner for defending herself against a serial murderer, too. *Another example of morons in academia.*

Stories like this, without common sense being applied, is mostly to blame as to why we Americans are afraid for our future.

It appears that a lot of folks are under the impression that substitute teachers are there to actually teach the students. I can tell you that, at least at the high school level, many schools are barely able to find a warm body to prop up at the big desk for a day. A living breathing substitute teacher qualified in the subject is as rare as a gym that doesn't smell like sweat.

That sub needs to be FIRED...
    • icedancer6060  •  Las Vegas, Nevada  •  3 mths ago
The substitute teacher should have been fired. If I slept at my job, I would be fired and I would deserve it. They don't pay me to sleep.

A high school teacher told my teen's class many times that he didn't feel like doing anything that day and they could just use it for homework, study or whatever. He also told the small class that he can't get fired.
    • John  •  4 mths ago
Well, shouldn't the sub be suspended, too? If the student had photogprahed a murder with his cell phone, would they let the murderer go free?
    • Michael  •  Berea, Ohio  •  3 mths ago
When I read the headline I naturally assumed a student was suspended by ropes or wires from the ceiling over a teacher who had fallen asleep.

I can recall going from my second shift part-time job, to my third shift part-time job and getting a call to come and substitute teach. After working from 300 pm to 700 am and going to a school, to sub for $50 bucks was a big deal back in the 70's. I didn't fall asleep, but I can tell you from experience the kids were better behaved and had a bit more respect for teachers...even substitutes.

I often feel surprised that so-called experts in our education system, from our government to states, down to school administrators, to teachers themselves, and to parents, cannot see how or why so many students are failing.

From my perspective, far back to the Great Depression through WW II, into the 1960s, to the present, I think I could list dozens upon dozens of reasons. This would become far to long for most commenters here to read. Maybe just a few.

My teachers, through high school were not organized/unions. They were held accountable for performance, no absolute security/pensions, whether or not they performed. Too much to post, but teachers back then could be fired if they were seen in a bar. Not arguing, just a fact.
My late brother was a high school teacher back then, taught English, and a football coach. As time passed, becoming too old to change careers, he related nightmares in the system. One point in particular, was lack of desire/ambition by so many students.

Example, in football, he never had a winning team. The school, in which he coached was, located in a wealthy neighborhood. This was his statement, "His players lacked the desire to succeed in sports. They were just too well off".

I have a neice, taught for 5 years in CA. The *System* burned her out!

There are, may be many examples, but consider this, since the 1960s on. All the electronic gadgets that are available to young people. Possible texting, during class, *during testing*.

Think about it. In my time, we had RADIO and BOOKS. That was it, aside from a *FEW* movies that we could afford. Radio programming was only after school hours. I recall, I had to do my homework as soon as I got home from school, or I couldn't listen to my favorite 30 min radio programs. Lone Ranger, The Shadow, The Green Hornet, on and on. After dinner, I could go out and play with friends. I recall friends coming to get me while I was doing homework. No way!
Sheesh! Even all the sexual activity in High Schools, even down to the 7th-8th grades.
Disicipline is almost a thing of the past.

Does this ring any bells? Students have too many distractions. Bad teachers are protected.
Too many parents, single mothers, working mothers, travel time to and from work, job stress, all are affecting what I had/didn't have through my school years.
Teachers with a calling, regardless of pay scale. (Give it a thumbs down, it's a fact)

Yup! I'm just an old timer, but got my education and stayed out of trouble. Enjoy your thumbs down!

      Student Suspended Over Sleeping Teacher

Gives the mental image of a student dangling in a harness above a teacher taking a snooze.

Why don't you clowns hire some WRITERS? My high-school journalism teacher would have had a good laugh over this -- before he red-penciled it.
