Students find man stuck for days in Rio Grande mud

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A homeless man who tells authorities he was stuck in the mud at the Rio Grande river in New Mexico for three days has been rescued after a group of high school students heard him yelling for help.

An Albuquerque Fire Department spokesman tells KRQE-TV (http://bit.ly/A6bCXQ) that the students and their biology teacher heard the man yelling from a marshy wetlands area Saturday morning.

It took swift-water and technical rescue teams about two hours to pull the unidentified man to safety. His name and condition were not released.

The man told the students he'd spent three days stuck in the mud about two miles north of Interstate 40 in Albuquerque.

Police later identified the man as Clayton Senn, a transient who'd been living near the river.

Police say they had a warrant for Senn's arrest for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was taken to an Albuquerque hospital for treatment and was to be booked on the warrant upon his release.

the name its self just strikes fear into the hearts of every mudphobic bandito that wants to get across that misnamed big river. when you got to trek for miles through a mud path to find a lick of standing water, it dawns on you, that only a mentally confused and seriously mixed up Spaniard mezcla could name that mud hole ""Rio Grande." for sure, it had something to do with the demon worm mezcla en una botella de mezcal. IR CON DIOS.

down by the levee, i shot my baby..... i used to swim in that Rio Grande, by Texas standards it is a big river, by everyone else standards it is a splattering trail of mud holes. i tried to swim that Rio Grande when i was in h.s., and all i got was a happy face smidgit of mud on the front of my white tee shirt. .....drinking whiskey and rye, singing this will be the day that i........IR CON DIOS.

I am amazed at how many people commenting on this article don't know where Albuquerque is and don't know that about 500 miles of the Rio Grande is totally in the USA.

That location is quite a distance from the border - like 300+ miles.

I know a guy getting stuck in mud for days is funny and perhaps might bring up the question of how can someone have this happen. Mud is the same as quicksand and can sometimes be deadly, I found myself in a pickle once on mud flats of a drained reservoir. Basically I was walking It took me four hours to move 10 feet back to mud that was firm enough to pull myself out of. After that I leaned how to deal quickly with being stuck in mud...lay down to distribute your weight and pull your legs out and crawl/roll/slither out to firmer land, and its always good idea to have a walking stick, a stick can pull you out rather easy. This is of course that you didn't fall into a very loose mud, in that case, try to swim...good luck...

When I was a kid in Texas we played around and let our legs sink into a river bank. The river bank was sand, clay, and mud. One day it wasn't so fun when we had to fight with all we had to get out. You slowly start sinking into this stuff and right around knee deep it is one heck of a fight to get out.

People, Albuquerque is no where near the border, for those of you who think he was crossing the border.

Why is it that so many automatically assume this guy is an illegal? The article didn't specify that. It gave almost no real information at all. He could have been a hunter, hiker or camper. Maybe he was out there looking for illegals to report or maybe he was a coyote out there to guide a new bunch through. You know what you get when you 'assume'? Break it down and think about it...

Glad they found him. I got stuck in quicksand once as a kid on our creek; sunk down to my knees and could not get out. Fortunately my brother was there and pulled me out- lost both shoes though. But the muddy sand along a creek or river can be quite deep and if there is nothing to grab hold to and pull yourself out, you are stuck. Had several cows get stuck down to their bellies; not easy to get them out.

Must not be a local, the Rio Grande banks can be treacherous, not the biggest river by far but as it runs throught the high desert it can and does take lives each year. Good thing we aren't reading that students found a body stuck in the mud.

I've heard for years that there is quicksand along the Rio Grande in Albuquerque. It's very dangerous.
