Students Physically Attacked for Interrupting Israel Talk in New Mexico

RELATED: Should Palestine Declare Itself a State?

A group of University of New Mexico students "mic checked" an Israel Alliance talk on their campus Thursday night, when audience members got up out of their seats and physically attacked the protesting students.

"Mic check! Nonie Darwish speaks for Israeli apartheid!," yell the students at around 15 seconds into the video.  "And genocide at the hands of the IDF [Israeli army]!” From there, older male audience members begin to slowly walk their way up to the students (some of them young women), and start physically pushing and attacking them. At 55 seconds in, you can see one of the students goes flying over a row of seats.

We're still trying to gather the facts on this story, but according to the promotional flyer (right),  the title of the talk was "Why the Arab Spring Is Failing" and was being lead by speaker Nonie Darwish.

According to uploader of the video, the students eventually filed a police report.  (Un)Occupy Albuquerque has this statement on the video:

A group of people, who were acting in solidarity with the Palestinian people, questioned Darwish's fear-mongering and her unqualified support for Israel. They were shouted down by pro-Israel members in the audience, who assaulted a woman, pulled her hair, and forcibly pushed another person over a row of seats. A third person was punched in the face. Pro-Israel members also destroyed a phone that was used to record the assault.

And here's one more angle of the protest and scuffle:

This is why we have police and/or campus police. They needed to be called to handle this disruption. There was no need to interrupt the talk nor was violence needed by the attendees. A university is supposed to facilitate the free exchange of ideas and information.

I might add---I am a University of New Mexico graduate.

tables have turned...pro palestinians have on multiple occasions shouted down invited university speakers that have anything to do with Israel, ( at UCI for example) and have also assaulted speakers. while I can't condone the actions of either party in this particular story, it is beyond clear to me that this is a direct response to the multiple shout-downs disruptive arab students are becoming known for.

LoL, you must be Israeli... always blaming the Palestinians. If you were a Palestinian, you'd be blaming the Israelis. Tell me, do either of you REALLY know who threw that first stone 70 years ago?? Or was it more like 7,000 years ago?

Nonie Darwish is followed by protests where ever she speaks. She is very outspoken about (and against) the Muslim faith she grew up in Egypt.
      • A Yahoo! User 3 mths ago
Yeah she met a calmer protest here, theMSA students walked out and flipped the lights off on her.

:-) i liked the idea to turning off the light. i think it is legal.

The Israel- Palestine conflict has nothing to do with religion. This is not a Muslim- Jewish problem. Youtube- Rabbi Weiss- educate yourselves PLEASE!!!
    • gca209  •  3 mths ago
The people have a right to hear the speaker. Protesters should not disrupt. They should be allowed to protest outside the event. Each side has a right to their opinion. What I don't like most the lack of tolerance. No university security for the event seems to be the problem.
    • seethepositive  •  3 mths ago
this used to be a place of opposing opinions being allowed. there should not be allowed any physical disruptions. throw out the disruptors.

Doing something like shouting down an invited guest does not help your cause.
      • Ben 3 mths ago
        yes it does

Ben, it also might get you punched in the mouth.

If the people did not agree with the speaker that was invited, all they had to was get a parade permit. They could of voiced their opposition that way --nice and peaceful like.

I encourage them to all travel to a Middle Eastern country and find a conference calling for the destruction of Israel and start screaming "stop the violence." They won't just get assaulted, they'll be killed by the people the are supposedly standing up for .... seriously, go try it. You won't? Didn't think so... you just like feeling 'edgy' and 'protesty' instead of doing something real and risking yourself.

There is simply no common sense or decency in this episode. If you want to protest, sit outside, then hold a counter-event immediately following. Walking in and screaming a speaker down invites a booty-whipping, in my opinion.
    • Adrian  •  Los Angeles, California  •  3 mths ago
This incident is a direct result of the schools that have let these psychotic, belligerent jerks terrorize anyone with a different opinion. If these students knew they'd be expelled for interrupting invited lecturers on campus, this would have never happened. Hold your protest outside, march, hold your breath, stamp your feet, whatever. But shouting down invited speakers should not have been allowed.

By all means exercise your right to free speech--but if you can't back it up, so be it. Rights are never "given", they are always fought for.
    • 1oldgoat  •  3 mths ago
"attacking" eh? Hm, where s that judge from Mechanicsville, Pennsylvania when you need him?
    • Bruce  •  Playas De Rosarito, Mexico  •  3 mths ago
Pennsylvania islamic judge Mark Martin dismissed an assault case against a fellow muslim and chided the assaulted man for insulting islam by wearing a Halloween costume of Zombie Mohammed. No doubt he and his ilk would throw the Jewish speakers in jail for provoking the muslims who disrupted the event.

it's time people stand up for what they believe and not get pushed around by crazies.
    • Skeletal Remains  •  3 mths ago
I'm no particular Israel or Jew sympathizer but why anybody need to go to spoil somebody else's party just because you disagree? Why they just go organize their own show and say what they have to say using their (only in America) 1st Ammendment right?. But no, they must go and "occupy" everybody else's space and try to shut up the other guys. Totalitarian roots at work. Just wait until they take power.
    • Tell-the-Truth  •  3 mths ago
An obvious over-reaction and a clear case of violation of freedom of speech!
