Study: 1/2 of Netflix users watch via game console

NEW YORK (AP) — A new Nielsen survey finds that in the battle between screens, Netflix users are opting for TVs and Hulu users are siding with computers.

Video game consoles have a lot to do with the discrepancy: Half of all Netflix users connect to its streaming service through their Nintendo Wii, Sony PlayStation 3 or Microsoft Xbox consoles, according to the survey.

The study, conducted in 12,000 online interviews in March, researched viewing habits among the two popular streaming services.

The Nielsen Co. found that 89 percent of Hulu users stream video on their computers. But only 42 percent of Netflix users watch directly on their computers.

Nearly three-quarters of Hulu users primarily watch TV shows. Netflix is more movie-driven, with just 11 percent focusing their viewing on TV shows. Slightly more than half of Netflix users watch mainly movies.

The findings highlight the strong appeal of TV sets for streaming digital video, connected through myriad Internet-enabled devices. Other methods of connecting include Blu-Ray players, TVs with Internet access and Roku boxes.

Appetite for such video continues to soar. In May, more than 15 billion videos were streamed, an all-time high, according to Nielsen.

Both Netflix and Hulu have their problems, though.

Netflix recently sparked an outcry from some users when it announced rate raises and a new pricing structure. Netflix plans to charge $8 a month for streaming, which it launched late last year, and an additional $8 and up for various DVD plans.

Earlier this month, Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger said Hulu's owners are "committed to selling." Hulu is owned by Disney, News Corp., Comcast Corp. and Providence Equity Partners.

In addition to its free service, Hulu.com now offers a premium service for $7.99 a month with more back-season TV shows and more movies.

Competition is also increasing. On Tuesday, Wal-Mart began streaming many movies the same day they come out on DVD. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. bought video-streaming service Vudu.com 18 months ago and now offers 20,000 titles.

i dont understand why everyone wants to watch all those OLD movies and tv shows ... thats all they have available to stream
      • Denise 10 mths ago
I choose to watch reruns of the old shows because i don't agree with the shows that are on now

I've been watching a series aired in Australia. I can't get that any other way without paying an arm and a leg for a set of DVDs covering 236 episodes. Well worth the streaming price for my entertainment interests.

There are lots of shows I haven't seen before as I cut the cable cord years ago. Also, Netflix has a very good selection of kids shows to stream.

I cancelled my service with the hike. If I want a movie it's cheaper to pay $5.99 for ppv and the streaming was horrible, nothing was less than 2 yrs old.
      • poster 10 mths ago
        not entirely accurate.
      • MadMax8600 10 mths ago
Please explain how it's cheaper? The 1 DVD a month is $7.99. I'll even round up to $10 for Blu-Ray. I get between 8 to 10 movies a month. At $5.99 that's somewher between $48 and $60. In fact, if you did just 2 PPV movies a month that would be $12. So, if you watch 1 movie per month then you are correct it would be cheaper. Anything greater than 1 then it wouldn't.

They are talking out their a$$. Also, there are plenty of movies that are less than two years old. They have movies that are less than one year old. It may not be exactly what you want, bu they are there for those who like them.

I think you're right on that. I'lll wait til my Sep bill is due and then cancel. I bet they'll rethink their price hike if they get enough cancellations. Who in the world increases prices, especially by this much, in such a bad economy?
      • Droppo 10 mths ago
They don't want to increase. The movie studios are about to bump up the cost on them. They have to increase or cut the streaming service alltogether. The studios are going to ask for an increase ten times the amount Netflix is currently signed up for, and they are only increasing our prices a small amount.

Free Hulu is computer only. That 11% represents Hulu Plus subscribers.

Netflix had to raise their prices because they are paying RIDICULOUS $$$ to the studios for steaming. It's not their fault, it's the movie studios who are driving the prices and are stuck in the past with their obsession with DVDs. If you use both streaming and DVDs, yes the price will go up by 100%, but it's still only $16 for BOTH!!!!! That's cheaper then a trip for one to the movie theater. And if that's too expensive, pick one and stop complaining.

In fairness, it's not really the studios' fault either--they have to shell out money for directors, actors, screenwriters and the special effects industry. Until recently, Netflix was a money-bleed for them.

Netflix complains that it is postage that is the issue.
      • WilliamC 10 mths ago
They pay 20 cents per disc to mail
    • WilliamC  •  10 mths ago
Yup. I agree - they lost me the first day they announced it. I will never go back. I suspect a whole bunch more are waiting on their re-up date or Sept 1st to cancel.
      • Alex 10 mths ago
I downgraded mine when they forced me to pay for streaming video which I don't use. I am happy with the change. I get three dvds now for less than what 2 were costing last month.

Microsoft won't let you watch Netflix streaming with the Xbox360 unless you subscribe to Xbox Live for a fee---You don't have to pay anything to Sony if you watch it through a Playstation 3--- If you own both machines the decision is easy--I won't subscribe to Xbox Live out of principle
    • rDub  •  10 mths ago
I was giving Netflix $10 a month before the fee hike, but will most likely switch to streaming only and only give them $8. That's a $2 loss from me, and who knows how many more people. I am going with RedBox for newer movies.

I use Netflix, I stream, and rent the DVD's for me it is a wonderful solution, worth the money, I am disabled and cannot go out always to rent movies. I watch old and new movies too, so I am satisfied as far as the content is concrned. If I cannot wait for a movie I go out to watch it if I can
    • Denise  •  10 mths ago
I have netflix, the unlimited streaming plan. I use my wii to watch it :) They're not that expensive still a cheap alternative to cable/satellite

If u raise my bill to move urself into south america or asia , then I cancel Netflix!
    • oldman  •  10 mths ago
It's pretty simple. Hulu interface bites on a TV.
    • MadMax8600  •  10 mths ago
The criticism around Netflix's price hike is ridiculous and way overblown, just do the math. When I signed up, it was $7.99/mth for streaming plus $2 for 1 DVD at home. I thought to myself how can they make any money with the 1 DVD for $2. I typically do 2 moves per week or about 10 a month. Even assuming they get a discount on postage to $30 cents, postage alone for 10 movies is $3.00. How about the cost of the movie, employees, rent, overhead, etc? Considering that movie theater prices are now upwards of $20 for 3D and average at least $12, I can't believe all the complaining about having to pay $10/mth for 8 to 10 movies delivered your right to your door. Also if you take into account that the movie studies want a bigger cut of the revenue for streaming movies and are the ones who decide what movies get streamed, Netflix is in a very difficult position.

Don't get me wrong I like the $2 but I would rather Netflix stay in business.
    • um...  •  10 mths ago
Not for long. Their streaming content is not worth $8.
    • Droppo  •  10 mths ago
People need to understand that Netflix HAS to increase their prices because the studios they have contracts with for streaming content are about to raise their prices through the roof. Ten times the current cost for Netflix to continue streaming. Now that they see it's popular to stream, the companies are jacking up the price. Netflix is only charging a few dollars more a month to continue the service and they were kind enough to split the streaming from the mail-in DVD service so you could just pick one if you want only one. I think they are doing a great job considering what they are up against with their own price hike from the studios.

All that matters is that I get to stream "The Human Centipede 2" from my PS3 when it comes out.
    • MrsWhite85  •  10 mths ago
