    Study: Big quake could hit Tokyo within years

    TOKYO (AP) — A new study is warning that Tokyo has a 70 percent chance of being hit by a powerful magnitude-7 earthquake within four years.

    The study published Monday by University of Tokyo seismologists based the warning on an increase in seismic activity in the region since last year's March 11 disaster, when a magnitude-9 quake and subsequent tsunami along Japan's northern coast left nearly 20,000 people dead or missing.

    The group said the number of moderate earthquakes in Tokyo increased sevenfold in the six-month period after March 11 compared with the previous six months, leading to the prediction.

    Japan is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries. Tokyo's last major quake was the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake that killed 140,000 people.

      I do not think the University of Tokyo seismologists are a bunch of irrational loons. They are probably the most conservative seismologists on the planet. If they saya 70% chance, you can bet in Vegas.

        They aren't conservative at all - they have a lot of reputation invested in this pseudo-science quake prediction so they want to try to predict what is somewhat obvious.

        Don't put much stock in these guys.

      You guys don't live in earthquake zones, do you?
      People in Japan probably think they are now safe from earthquakes since they had a big one. There are lots of different faults over there and another one is inevitable. They told us here in CA in 1989 when we had a 7.2 that the next big one would come in Los Angeles in the next few years. It was a good warning to those in LA who ended up being prepared for it. In 93 (or was it 94?) the Northridge quake came along. So maybe they issued this to help people to prepare for another big one and to help them understand that they are not out of danger.

        Nobody thinks that, Doggone It. We get tons of earthquakes a year already. Outside of the 9.0 last year there were some 5-6 quakes over 7.0 near(ish) to Tokyo last year (most related to the big one). You know how much damage there was in Tokyo from any of them? Virtually none.

      I lived in Japan. The thing is, they're set up for anything except for something like that 9.0 that hit Sendai (while I was there living in Japan, no less). The measurement scale is also very difficult to understand without multiple variables.
