Study finds tablet, e-book ownership soared

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Tablets and e-readers were a popular gift over the holidays, so much so that the number of people who own them nearly doubled between mid-December and January, a new study finds.

A report from the Pew Internet and American Life Project, released on Monday, found that 29 percent of Americans owned at least one tablet or e-reader as of the beginning of this month. That's up from 18 percent who said the same in December.

The iPad from Apple Inc. is perhaps the best-known example of these gadgets, along with Amazon.com's various Kindle devices and the Nook from Barnes and Noble. The iPad put tablets on the map and the cheaper Kindle Fire and Nook devices helped get them in the hands of more people.

The percentage of people who own a tablet jumped to 19 from 10 between mid-December and early January. E-book reader ownership also rose to 19 percent from 10 percent of U.S. adults.

Men and women were equally likely to own tablets, and the likelihood of tablet ownership was higher for people with higher household incomes, the report found. Those with higher levels of education were also more likely to own tablets than those who completed fewer years of school.

E-readers, meanwhile, were slightly more common among women.

The figures are from ongoing surveys conducted by Pew about tablet and e-reader ownership. They were conducted between November 2011 and January 2012. The first, pre-holiday survey was conducted among 2,986 Americans 16 and older. Two post-holiday surveys were conducted among about 2,000 adults in January.

"And the likelihood of tablet ownership was higher for people with higher household incomes, the report found." That's a Captain Obvious statement if I've ever seen one.

Not so much anymore. The prices on the cheaper readers are now comparable to the price of two new hardback books combined.

He is talking about TABLETS not eReaders... there is a VERY big difference.

eReaders and small tablets cost lost than a pair of Jordan whatevers, and are ultimately way more educational (as though that counts!)

Study finds that amongst folks who purchased an ereader or tablet for the first time, ereader and tablet ownership increased by 100%.

LOL!, I bet it took a lot of statistical analysis to get that conclusion. :o)

You should be a management consultant.

If you're buying it to read books from, get the e-ink B&W Kindle...way easier on the eyes for extended reading. The color gadgets are great for email, Facebook, browsing, but are death on the eyes for extended reading...voice of experience speaking!

I'm waiting for some smart, savvy school system to either give or require every child to have an e-reader. Then on the first day of school all the books they need will be uploaded to them so instead of 50 pounds of paper books they only need to carry the e-reader and a copybook "The dog ate my Kindle" just isn't gonna fly.

I'm sure this will happen within the next 5 or 10 years. My older sister would have certainly appreciated it, she has permanent damage to her shoulders because of all the books she had to lug around back in the day.

I'm wondering if any authors are selling many books on Amazon downloads to these E-Readers. It wouldn't be kosher to mention my book on Amazon, posted last saturday, but, my name is....

Funny you should ask. I wrote and published an e-book in November on Amazon and it's also available B&N and the iBookstore. I've been out of work for 3 years now and thought I'd give it a try IF I can sell a million copies (@ $2.99ea) I can retire and get out of the job market forever, but so far I've only sold about 20 copies...total. Is that the kind of information you were looking for?

I bought the iPad2 last year and I barely use my laptop, once I got to know how to use it. With so many apps in the market, I can use it for productivity, entertainment and school projects. The newest Galaxy tablet it's a great device too.

I think the future computer devices will be mostly tablets due to its user interface and portability.

Same with my Kindle Fire. Laptop for heavy duty stuff, the tablet for everything else.

I won't buy a tablet because it's all "cloud computing" that is your operating system and ALL of you data storage is on someone else's computer, you don't know who's or where and you need some kind of WiFi link which is yet another expense. No thanks I'll keep my clunky old tower and laptop even without internet access I can still do stuff on it.

I have a iPad2. I have recreational books on it. I also have 3 or 4 news services. I cannot find the professional books I would like. There is ONE down side to any ereader, one cannot swat flies with it as we can with a news paper. SMIRK

"E-readers, meanwhile, were slightly more common among women." Because women tend to read more. That being said, I was never a big reader UNTIL I bought an eReader a year ago and have read over 20 books since then. Once I learned you can get inexpensive self-published books by new authors for dirt cheap that are actually much better than most traditionally published books, I became an avid reader. Recently I upgraded to an iPad 2 so now my eReader can do so much more than just 'reading'.

My iPhone 4 is nicer then my 3GS that I had before, but my iPAD2 is WAY cooler then my iPAD. I am looking forward to the iPAD3, it's gonna be HOT! Maybe I will get the iPhone 4S too or wait for the iPhone 5. I did get a $77 B&H (Black) Android 1.5 reader from BIG LOTS but it was crap and when it fell 5 feet off my book shelf this weekend it shattered. GO WITH QUALITY, GO WITH APPLE. It is money well spent!
