Study: ‘Huge discrepancies’ between global climate predictions and hard data

Global warming may occur slower and correct itself faster than computer models have been predicting, a new study says.

The study, published in the peer-reviewed science journal Remote Sensing by Dr. Roy Spencer, a principal research scientist in the Earth System Science Center at The University of Alabama in Huntsville, reports the atmosphere may shed heat much faster than previously thought — a potentially serious problem for the computer models used to predict global climate trends.

For his study, Spencer compared a half dozen climate model predictions with actual satellite data during an 18-month period before and after warming events between 2000 and 2011.

“The satellite observations suggest there is much more energy lost to space during and after warming than the climate models show,” Spencer said in a University of Alabama press release. “There is a huge discrepancy between the data and the forecasts that is especially big over the oceans.”

In addition, the study reports that the atmosphere begins to shed heat earlier in the warming process than predicted. A major part of current global climate theory holds that CO2 traps heat in the atmosphere, resulting in more cloud cover and more heat — a positive feedback cycle.

Spencer’s analysis of satellite data shows the climate system starting to shed heat more than three months before the typical warming event reaches its peak. (RELATED: Polar bear climate change scientist under investigation for ‘integrity issues’)

Gavin Schmidt, a NASA Goddard climatologist, acknowledged the discrepancy between predictions and satellite data in an interview with LiveScience.

“What this mismatch is due to — data processing, errors in the data or real problems in the models — is completely unclear,” he said.

However, Schmidt continued: “Climate sensitivity is not constrained by the last two decades of imperfect satellite data, but rather the paleoclimate record.”

Other scientists assailed the study for alleged flaws in its methodology. “I cannot believe it got published,” said Kevin Trenberth, a senior scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, in the same LiveScience article.

But the study has found a warm reception among those critical of global warming science.

“The study illustrates how much scientists still need to learn about how our climate behaves, particularly how much heat carbon dioxide may or may not be trapping,” said James Taylor, a senior fellow for environment policy at the Heartland Institute. “When something so central has been so erroneously predicted, this tells us we have a long way to go before we can claim any future climate predictions are ‘settled science.’”

Don't take someones opinion on the data from the NASA 2000-2011 satillite survey on earth temp go to the site and read NASA's report then you decide. :-)

It doesn't change the erroneous data the Al Gore jackasses have been touting, does it?

scientists laugh on one hand about the virgin birth ....yet push a virgin birth for life.
they are like a dog chasing its tail always coming up with the next thing...evolution,abiogenesis,yet nothing will ever go back far enough to explain how even the elements came to be let alone life.

Spencer is a known idiot and contrarian. No need to take him seriously, as his peers in the scientific community do not. He would have voted to execute Galileo for calling the earth round instead of flat.

I don't expect anyone to believe in global warming. I do, however, expect them to realize the implications beyond global warming. Global warming (real or not) is just one of the many symptoms of environmental degradation. Desertification from poor irrigation techniques, old-growth forest logging from poorer parts of the world, erosion from the aforementioned logging, and oceanic acidification from the increase in CO2 in the air (this is actually real and not a debatable point) are all grave threats and will kill us before we fry to death. What environmental scientists fixate on is not global warming, but better management of our resources and better use of our land to mitigate our destructive impact upon it. Before you try to debunk all of environmental science, think about its interdisciplinary nature and what other fields of science have predicted and contributed that helped form the basis of environmental science.

Marik, We have to destroy our envirnment to get the resources we need to support the unbelievable number of human beings resulting from our religions telling us to be fruitful. If we keep going we will have standing room only.

Both of you should kill yourselves so you won't destroy the environment.

      >Dr. Roy Spencer..
His whole agenda is debunking Global Warming and promoting right wing agenda.

That puts things in a different perspective.

Ahhhh Lefty David, does thou type before thinking? I say yes. You make the typical alarmist response, making a conclusion, providing no link and no details to debunk the debunker (who does provide tons of specifics). You mention right wing agenda. Did you know republicans are the biggest supporters of Ethanol subsidies and many of them are on your side? Even the dems realize some of the proposed alarmist policies are insane? Fact: President Clinton would not join Kyoto because it was grossly unfair to the USA while allowing China to get away with
massive pollution? We all want to clean up mother earth but with sane policies.
      • Mary Alice 10 mths ago
Mike, It sounds like your idea of sane policies is to wait and see. Risking waiting until the damage is done before we heed any warnings. If I told you you were in the way of an oncoming mack truck, would you wait to see if it hit you before you believed my warning?
      • David 10 mths ago
        >Ahhhh Lefty David, does thou type before thinking?

Nope. I stand in the middle so I can give both parties the same hand sign--which side are you sucking up to?

        >You mention right wing agenda.

I didn't--that is someone else';s post which I an "quoting from--note the '>' before the words?

I would sure like to believe that his new theory is correct, but then I see where it originated in Alabama. That alone makes it extremly suspicious.

Mary Alice: Classic example of anti-science thinking. Do you also check a person's skin color and religion to determine validity?
      • Mary Alice 10 mths ago
Fogelman, I am not anti science, since you seem to be a little slow on the uptake will put my thinking differently. I kind of doubt if this "new" information is real science because of where it originated. But I am withholding judgement until I have more information. I would like to see what the other 99.9% of our meteorologist have to say about it.

Global Warming is a scam use dto transfer wealth for developed countries to undeveloped countries. Since developed countries use more fossil fuels theymust give their wealth to the undeveloped countries to compensate them for the mistakes of the wealthy countries. A classic scam believed by the ignorant, perpetuated by educated fools. Climate control is beyond mans capability, has been for million sof years. When we can control a hurricane or earthquake I will believe we can control climate. Until then climate change is so much liberal #$%$ nothing more nothing less.
    • James Fogleman  •  10 mths ago
'...last two decades of imperfect satellite data, but rather the paleoclimate data.' Is Schmidt saying that the paleoclimate data is more 'perfect' than satellite data? If he believes that, he must be in favor of closing NASA & disregarding his own work.

How many of the people who read this article noticed the part that said, "Climate sensitivity is not constrained by the last two decades of imperfect satellite data, but rather the paleoclimate record". This guy is basing his ideas on two 18 month time frames during ten years of questionable satelite data. He also admits that there is warming that he cannot account for in his theory. It might be a good idea to see if his ideas are backed up by other studies before we rewrite the textbooks
    • Henry  •  10 mths ago
And some people will still call carbon dioxide a pollutant. No matter the data they'll stick by their computer models of what might happen.
    • Nathan M  •  10 mths ago
"It does not however, change the fact that we are warming due to human activities." I think you mean, it doesn't change the dogma. The BEST evidence climatologists had in support of man-caused global warming involved computer models. Of course, that is now debunked. Climate-Gate, which everyone is anxious to forget about doesn't help your case either.
    • THOMAS  •  10 mths ago
      Talk about your inconvenient truths!
I never bought into the man-made global warming scare. Not because of politics, though. I have just seen no data that DIRECTLY links global climate change to man-made (assumed) causes. There is proof of wide temperature fluctuation cycles (multiple ice-ages and "thaws") in history. But these happened over long periods of time, and long before man walked the earth, much less, industrialized to the point of being able to supposedly wreak such havoc.....So, rather than try to understand these cycles and apply it to warming experienced in modernity, it is much easier to dismiss it as not applicable, and blame ourselves.

I was just suddenly reminded of why I don't believe half the crap the government comes up with...
    • Jim  •  10 mths ago
Roy Spencer doesn't believe in evolution either, and is a signer of this decleration: "We believe Earth and its ecosystems — created by God’s intelligent design and infinite power and sustained by His faithful providence — are robust, resilient, self-regulating, and self-correcting, admirably suited for human flourishing, and displaying His glory. Earth's climate system is no exception."

Yeah, that's who I should listen to...

Global Warming is a fraud meant to scare mainly liberal-types,
just as 9/11 was a fraud meant to scare mainly conservative-types.
Both seek the abolition of personal freedoms, and bowing down to a desperate, fascist government that treats you like you're a terrorist or planet-killer just for existing.
Our Elitist leaders want to keep lording wealth & control over us, they see us as peons to be herded and managed.
