Study: Infant formula ads reduce breast-feeding

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The World Health Organization said a study has found that Filipino mothers who have been influenced by advertisements or their doctors to use infant formula are two to four times more likely to feed their babies with those products.

The study appears to support the Philippines' decision to limit advertising for infant formula, which can discourage mothers from breast-feeding that provides health benefits for newborns.

Published by the Social Science and Medicine Journal in September and released this week, the study said those mothers were 6.4 times more likely to stop breast-feeding babies within one year of age — a step that raises risks of illness and death for the infant.

Breast milk significantly reduces infant mortality, according to international health experts, who recommend that mothers exclusively breast-feed for the first six months and continue breast-feeding, supplemented by solid foods, until their babies are 2 years old.

The International Code of Marketing of Breast-Milk Substitutes, sponsored by the World Health Organization and UNICEF, is not legally binding. It is up to individual countries to implement the code by enacting their own laws.

The Philippine study wanted to examine if marketing for breast milk substitutes was to blame for a drop in breast-feeding in the Southeast Asian country, one of several where multinational companies fought a legal battle for the right to aggressively sell baby formulas.

When the Philippine government tried to tighten its advertising laws for milk products, the companies took it to court.

The Supreme Court ruling in October 2007 upheld the Department of Health's mandate to regulate advertising of breast milk substitutes. It prohibited all health and nutrition claims but failed to support a full advertising ban, citing freedom of speech.

WHO data show exclusive breast-feeding rates for Filipino babies up to four months old dropped from 47.3 percent in 1998 to 40.1 percent in 2008.

Four of the six authors of the study are from the WHO, led by the organization's medical officer Howard Sobel. They conducted a household survey between April and December 2006 and focus groups in April-May 2007.

According to their findings, 59.1 percent of the mothers recalled an infant formula advertisement message and one-sixth reported a doctor recommended using formula. Those who recalled an ad message were twice as likely to feed their babies infant formula, while whose advised by a doctor where four times as likely to do so.

"Despite poverty and extra strain on household income associated with formula use, 41.1 percent of the infants and young children were fed formula," the authors said.

The WHO says addition of formula leads to decreased stimulation from suckling and its reflex for breast milk production. Not breast-feeding also was associated with a 5.8 times increased risk of all-cause deaths in the first two months of life, with risks elevated up to the second year, it says.

The authors said that despite the WHO's adoption in 1981 of the International Code of Marketing Breast Milk Substitutes to curtail unethical marketing promotions, few countries have fully implemented the code's ban on advertising or other forms of promotion.

Alex V. Castro III, executive director of the Infant Pediatric Nutrition Association of the Philippines that groups infant formula makers, said the association fully supports breast-feeding.

He said their members have been diligently complying with the Philippines' adaptation of the WHO's milk code, including prohibitions in advertising. He said no advertisement has been allowed without approval of an interagency headed by the Department of Health.

Breast is best and some women do have actual medical problems preventing them from breastfeeding and some babies are adopted so breasfeeding just isn't an option. This article isn't blaming anyone who truly cannot breastfeed. So much ugly comments on here. Breastfeeding is difficult in the beginning, especially for first time moms and formula companies make it way too easy for these moms to give up on breastfeeding. These companies are making millions of dollars from people who can barely afford their rent.

I breastfed, but still was verbally assaulted by the loud-mouthed people who scold you for seeking privacy for baring your breast to feed your child. They acted like my walking ten steps to the store dressing room or a few yards to my car would scar my infant for life. Sheesh!

      Advertising works. That's a story?

I tried pure breastfeeding for 15 days straight upon birth because i was brainwashed into thinking that it was best for babies. My baby got dehydrated, lost an alarming amount of weight and started urinating pink-orange crystals. Mind you, I consulted with several lactation experts and breastfeeding advocate doctors and they all said it was normal. I couldn't stand seeing my baby who was born at 7.8 lbs turn into an ethiopian-looking, skin and bones baby The moment I gave her formula, she gained healthy weight, her excretion became normal and she is much healthier than my friend's baby who was breastfed for 3 years! She is strong, healthy and happy with her formula. So I say, do what's best for your own baby, don't listen to all the hype from purist activists and find a good doctor with years of experience.

2 yrs old is much too long to breast feed. However if you can't afford real milk, I guess it works. Not only does breast milk give the best nutrients but also, more importantly, immunity to some diseases. And don't feel bad if you can't breast feed (inverted nipples), just do your best. Also, if you bottle feed STOP it when the child is 1 yr old and switch to a c up. And under NO circumstances add sugar to the milk! Your child will have rotten teeth.

I agree with Magician because I am a working mom that's why I have to settle for both breast feeding and milk formula. The fact thay my daughters get the colostrum from my breasts, I am happy that they'll be strong and healthy children. Getting the right formula for a milk with doctors advice is really a great help. Doctor's won't recommend any formula milk which will harm our baby's health, because formula milk have been studied by doctors too, before it will be introduce in the market. And being a mother, we have our choices. My thoughts.....

Breast feeding tip: for 1st time mothers if theres no milk coming out, the solution is to let the father suck it. no kidding!
    • Dee  •  3 mths ago
Unfortunately, the problem in some of these countries is that the mothers think that formula is best, due to advertising and their doctor's pushing it on them. Couple that with a lack of money to purchase formula, a lack of clean water to reconstitute the formula and lack of sanitary water to clean the bottles, and you have a health epidemic. All because a stupid formula company wants to sell their product in a new market. Might as well send them Marlboro ads, huh? Oh...wait....we already do.

I can’t get over how judgmental some of you are towards moms who use formula. Of course breastfeeding is best! There are other reasons besides laziness or inconvenience for moms not breastfeeding. Our son couldn’t suck. (His apgar scores were 4, 5, & 6) He was loosing weight so fast that ceasing breastfeeding became detrimental to his survival. He couldn’t suck on a regular bottle either. We had the bottles with the disposable bags and had to squeeze the formula into his mouth. We were told that he could die within two months after birth. Instead, he thrived and was a healthy child who has grown into a healthy, productive adult.

Do you really think that shaming an already panicked mother is the answer? I feel sorry for YOUR children, being raised by such judgmental, intolerant parents. What are you teaching your kids? It is really no one else’s business whether mom chooses to breast feed or use formula. No one is telling you not to breast feed; so don’t push your choices on anyone else.

We wish now that someone had taught and encouraged us to pump instead. We could have used the breast milk in the bottles. That was back in the early 80s.

Just discussing, not arguing here... some mothers want to give their baby breastmilk so much that during the first few days, while their supply are low, they resort to getting milk from "breastmilk banks"---breastmilk donated by other moms. But I read that AIDS can be trasmitted thru breastfeeding. Isn't it kind of dangerous, this practice?

Breast feeding is better than a formula when they are babies. Some babis can't tolerate fomulated milk. I know because my sister almost died from drinking it.

That is how media culture is deeply rooted. we believe everything we see on tv. Pansinin po nyo yung ads ng mga food supplement halos hindi mabasa yung “No Approved Therapeutic Claim”. sana may ads din na yung mother's milk pa rin ang the best pero sino magbabayad ang air time dito? nestle? enfamil?

so happy with my breast to produced too much milk for 5th month baby boy. planning to continue breastfed until 1 year. with God grace
    • Judy  •  3 mths ago
Wow, what a bunch of women hating on each other. Hope you're not all doing it to feel better about yourselves. Women have their own PRIVATE reasons why they do or do not breastfeed, whether that is a choice or medical reason (just like they have reasons for working or not working when their children are young).

The solution to stop infant formula advertisement is to closed multinational companies who produced infant formulas. And let us see how it help our country progress! Slowly we Rot \m/

i always post a comment it here breastfeeding,my baby born with chronic liver diseases and given referral for liver transplant but a huge money involve for the procedure.Everything we did best for my ill baby, A week after week he suffers a lot of complication due to his disease,he is now 11th month old but he still survives,We feed the baby breast milk i'm sure his 11month survival were brought from the milk that came from breast.

the 1st drop of breastmilk is the most essential cause it contains immunoglobulin or antibody from the Mother....in other words if the mother DOES NOT HAVE a good history of vaccination, healthy lifestyle and immunity to certain d'se the infant will have a weak immune system...now if you compare with

baby 1: breastmilk with rich antibodies
baby 2: breastmilk without or insufficient antibodies
      baby 3: formula milk

baby 1 and 3 will have a better immune system

It's the mother who chooses what to feed that baby some mother's don't even care what they give there baby like formula is always being recalled what does that say about it!! Stop trying to find something to blame, if you want to breastfeed you will, there is no such thing that you can't produce enough milk, when breastfeeding my twins I pumped every hour, its just some ppl are too lazy!!!!

The breast feeding nazi's influenced us to pick up formula... that and my wife's inability to produce milk with any caloric content (not her fault ...anemia, stress). But the nazi's persisted, belittled my wife, making her feel inept and low. Yeah we know breast is best, but there is no need to berate people for making a decision that differs from the one you want.

Both my kids were bottle fed, both are in horizons level classes (advanced) both play multiple musical instruments and are very healthy... I don't see how our choice has affected them one iota.
