Study: Invasion led to spike in Iraq widows

BAGHDAD (AP) — A study released Sunday by a global humanitarian aid organization concluded that three out of every five widows in Iraq lost their husbands in the years of violence that followed the 2003 invasion.

The study by Los Angeles-based Relief International found that about 10 percent of the estimated 15 million women who live in Iraq are widows. Among them, 59 percent have lost their husbands during the U.S.-led war.

The study warned that criminal gangs and terrorist groups might try to recruit desperate widows, and that ignoring their suffering could lead them to prostitution, drugs and terrorism.

"The Iraqi state has neglected the widows with their enormous problems, and the solutions lie in the establishing of bodies to take care of and solve the problems of these women," the report said.

The report was released at a conference in Baghdad where parliament speaker Osama al-Nujaifi pledged to help widows through job opportunities, salaries and loans to help them start small businesses.

"The misery of those widows has an impact on the whole society," al-Nujaifi said. "This catastrophe is growing, and its danger will threaten our values."

In a small room in eastern Baghdad where she lives with her four children, widow Wafiya Hussein said she depends on relatives' donations to keep her family alive. Her husband was killed in a Baghdad explosion in 2009 as he was heading to work.

"I receive no assistance from the government, and I cannot work due to my illnesses," said Hussein. 41, who suffers from diabetes and high blood pressure.

"Our situation is difficult," she said, pleading for government support to help raise her children, including a crippled son.

Also Sunday, a statement by the Integrity Commission said Iraq has recovered $116 million from French bank accounts that were registered to a former official in Saddam Hussein's regime.

The commission did not identify who the Saddam aide was, or if he is still alive.

Saddam and his aides amassed huge amounts of personal wealth during his 24-year reign.

the legacy of muhammed provides for this easily. that is why they can have four wives, they are well prepared for sustained conflict and casualties. the men survivors will take care of the widows.

Well, they have a better life now, and the world is a safer place since the American military, pretty much by itself, captured and disposed of their nukes. Imagine what the Middle East would have been like without American's willingness to sacrifice its young men, for the removal of Iraq's nuclear arsenal. After Saddam used his vast influence to talk 20 Saudi men into ramming airplanes into the Twin Towers, I'm sure he was on the verge of taking out Israel and then America with his radioactive missiles. And when it comes to Afghanistan, I know we made the right decision to invade that nation, even though Bin Laden was living in Pakistan. We wrecked that place, but Afghanistan was hiding Bin Laden in Pakistan, and now they're paying the ultimate price--American soldiers coming home in body bags. We're making Afghanistan pay for harboring Bin Laden in Pakistan.

Apparently you didn't pay much attention the last ten years.

Common sense, you can not make war, and not have widows. War=widows, I thought everyone realized that. We need to spend money on the research. I have an idea that will cost 1 million dollars to develop and mass produce, and save the world from greenhouse gasses, and cannot get $1.00 to develop this grand idea into reality, but we have enough money to spend on research to see if men really do die in wars, W.T.F.

I may not have gotten the numbers correct, but I could have told you that in a matter of seconds for free. You guys really wasted time and money on this study?!?!?

It's simple. Islam allows four wives to each husband, plus "those who you possess with the right hand" . Slaves, in other words(Mohammed). So, actually, the mortality rate of men 2003 is at least 15-30 percent less, and up to 25- 50 percent less, depending on how many of these "women" were married to the same man. Go work there for awhile - you'll find out.

oh please, I raw was the aggressor who invaded Kuwat and it would now be an Iraqi state along with Saudi had not America saved them. Iraq started this whole middle east mess.. THEY are to blame.

maybe they could find new husbands if they got rid of the Burquas and used a bit of makeup?

Help these women out! Fear God and do not let them be without help. Do you not feel ashamed for what your action will do? There are so many children without fathers and who will help them? So many orphans because of this unjustified war. Help these women and children out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You don't even need to do a study to figure that one out!!! Obviously there will be less men in any wars going back to the cave man days!

Hey, Freedom, you need to slip out to a pharmacy and get something for that "diarrhea of the mouth" problem that you exhibit so well!

I conducted a study my self. I found that the number of disabled and wounded vets rose right after the war started. Also, the number of vets being shot at by insurgents went up as well.

So if you have an equal amount of men vs women. Then you kill half the men. There are then more women then men. They actualy commisioned a study to figure this out. Brilliant !
I have 4 apples and 4 oranges. I am going to eat two apples then commission a recount.

It was probably funded by our brilliant congressional representatives! It sure does sound like something they would do with our hard-earned tax dollars... pobably millions!

Well no $#!t sherlock, Who conducted this study, Captain Obvious?
    • StanU  •  8 mths ago
What a brain surgeon that figured this out. I don't know what rock this person has been hiding under but war has a way of effecting mortality rates.

According to "International" Red Cross figures over 1.3 million innocent mostly women and children were slaughtered in Iraq alone with no reason to kill them besides the "aluminum tubes", smoking guns, WMD, and other lies perpetrated by Zionist occupied Washington DC. In addition over 4 million Iraqi citizens were displaced. Between Israel and its puppet USA more depleted uranium has been placed in the Middle East than the atomic bombs dropped on Japan. In Iraq, alone, birth defects have risen 600%. People, inclusive of USA soldiers will continue to become sick and die for decades to come from the depleted uranium. No matter how Zionists and neocons define this holocaust, it remains a holocaust of indescribable proportions and the perpetrators of this holocaust need to be prosecuted and punished.

        Fuuuuuuuuu_____cccccK you!

No self-respecting American who calls himself "Freedom" can in good conscience spew such abject non-sense about Zionist and Jews in general. Freedom!? What kind of freedom can we have in America as long as people like you continue make anti-semitic Nazist accusations without a shred of evidence! Your hatred of Jews seems to be the only evidence you need to delude yourself into believing this stupidity. Is it Zionists who decided to give Egypt billions of dollars in aid every year? Is it the Zionists who decided that the CIA should be making deals with Qaddafi, or with Saddam Hussein? I suppose you believe it was the Zionists who coerced Osama Bin Laden to attack the WTC?

Can you be a bigger idiot! You are the kind of A hole that blames the few million Jews who are left for every problem that happens on this planet. Why not blame the Zionist for the earthquake in Japan! The chemical disaster in Bhopal was a Zionist conspiracy, wasn't it A hole? Didn't Hitler attack Poland in 1939 at the behest of the Zionist!? Why not A hole, it makes perfectly good sense doesn't it.

Do a little soul searching into the kind of idiot you are before you open your mouth again. Jerk off!

Is it the Americans that are blowing people up with suicide murderers, IEDs, car bombs and others indiscriminate killings? You know it's not!! The "peaceful" Muslims are the ones doing it, so keep your idiotic opinions to yourself about things where you are not willing to admit the truth!!!!
