Study linking virus and chronic fatigue retracted

NEW YORK (AP) — A prestigious scientific journal is retracting a controversial 2009 report that linked chronic fatigue syndrome to a virus.

In an unusual move, the journal Science is taking that step on its own. Normally, authors retract their own research papers when serious problems arise after publication.

But Science has lost confidence in the report and the validity of its conclusions, editor-in-chief Bruce Alberts writes in Friday's issue. He said most of the authors have agreed in principle to retract the paper "but they have been unable to agree on the wording of their statement." A retraction signed by all the authors "is unlikely to be forthcoming," Alberts wrote.

Chronic fatigue syndrome is characterized by severe fatigue for at least six months, impaired memory and other symptoms.

The 2009 paper, from scientists at the Whittemore Peterson Institute in Reno, Nev., the Cleveland Clinic and the National Cancer Institute, reported finding a virus called XMRV in blood cells of some patients with chronic fatigue syndrome. That raised hope that a cause of the mysterious illness had been found, although other viral suspects over the years had proven to be false leads.

But follow-up studies found no evidence of such a link. Last May, Science published two reports suggesting the original finding was due to lab contamination.

At the time, Alberts published a statement declaring that the validity of the study was "now seriously in question."

Then in September, the authors retracted some of the data, citing contamination.

In his statement on the full retraction, Alberts said the authors had also acknowledged omitting important information about the study's procedures in an illustration of some lab results.

Robert Silverman of the Cleveland Clinic, one of the paper's 13 authors, said in a statement Thursday that he was pleased by the full retraction. He said he had sought one this summer after finding that blood samples were contaminated.

Through a spokeswoman, another study author, Francis Ruscetti of the cancer institute, declined to comment.

Annette Whittemore, president of the Whittemore institute, said in a statement that her organization remains committed to discovering the roots of the disorder. "It is not the end of the story, rather it is the beginning of our renewed efforts," she said. "We ... look forward to the rigorous review of our scientific research."

A key figure in the research, Judy Mikovits, is no longer with the Whittemore institute.

I have EBV at 5.5 M for over 40 years. I hope one of you guys can figure the virus things out so I can feel good for 1 day before I die. CFS does hurt.
      • Anita 5 mths ago
I also suffer from CFS and Fibromyalgia it is indeed painful and life altering. Any kind of hope and/or relief would be welcome. I pray that for ours and many others sake that the research continues, it may not be life threatening but it is an awful way to go through life.

I'm sorry for your suffering but what if it turns out not to be a virus?

Just because they're not linking a virus to CFS doesn't mean it's not real and there isn't some other cause for it. For a long time Lyme disease was thought to be caused by a virus and that's not the case anymore, since it responds (sometimes) to antibiotics. I'm wondering if all of these diseases, Fibromyalgia, Lyme, Alzheimer's and CFS, have something in common because they all seem to share the same symptoms in one way or the other.
      • fernandaux 5 mths ago
They have nothing to do with one another, you are crazy and have no medical background and need to shut up.
      • rodentraiser 5 mths ago
Fernandaux, I just finished reading Cure Unknown: Inside the Lyme Epidemic by Pamela Weintraub, which is a pretty comprehensive study of Lyme disease. I didn't state any facts linking Fibromyalgia, Lyme, Alzheimer's and CFS, but I feel I'm as entitled as anyone else to make suppositions based on what I know and have read about. So if you want me to shut up, bring your army and take your best shot. By the way, I'd be interested to know what your medical background is.

If you have hair loss and a bad taste in your mouth with chronic fatigue, you most likely are overdosing on Vitamin E - exact same cluster - crashing fatigue which is very different from feeling tired. Vitamin E is the culprit and there has been massive over use of Vitamin E coincident with CFS. Stop the Vitamin E and see if all your symptoms get better in a few weeks.
      • Larry 5 mths ago
I have CFS and I don't take vitamin E. Hmm!
      • Tim R 5 mths ago
Vitamin E and copper buildup are a secondary issue caused by Candida albicans infection of the intestines.
      • J 5 mths ago
Vitamin E has its own set of syndromes that can be confused with CFS. Plus Vit E is added to so many products and foods lots of people can get a Vitamin E build up because it is fat soluable vitamin and does not flush out of the body when consumed in excess amounts.

Oh man, it is old but every symposium I attend has several talks from big-wig retrovirologists about how XMRV is a hoax. It is just contamination from MLV, a murine retrovirus, that is probably found in any lab that works with mice.
      • Horatio 5 mths ago
A hoax is a deliberately fabricated falsehood. In this case it's probably just bad lab practices and poorly designed controls (plus too much ego in some of the participants). You said so yourself...

I suspect that CFS could be from many different things. It could be vitamin deficiencies in some. Doctors are not very good at finding vitamin deficiencies except in a few vitamins like iron. I have read that many in our modern society are deficient in D and B vitamins.

It could also be mild food allergies. Food is very different in recent years than it was before.

It could be all the additives in the food. It is said that most Americans eat their body weight in additives every year.

And it could be about viruses in other CFS patients.

Good thing they retracted that bit of propaganda! Up until 7 years ago I suffered from what I believe to be chronic fatigue or lethargy. Most folks chalk it up to age and in a way, that's true but not just because your older. I no longer suffer from feeling tired all the time. Back then, I went to my doctor and he prescribed Lisinopril for high blood pressure. Mine wasn't too high but elevated a tad above normal. He also sent me to the lab for a blood panel. The results came back by the end of the week and he added Lipitor to my drug list to bring down my cholesterol. That's where I said no. He argued for a few minutes as I explained another way I wanted to do things. We agreed I wasn't likely to die soon so he advised me to give my plan a try and come back in six months to check things and see how I did. I went back a year later and my blood pressure was normal and blood work came back with all the previously skewed readings falling in the middle of all the ranges with my cholesterol under 200. I didn't change my eating habits or exercise regimen but did manage to lose a few pounds but not enough for any of those things to account for my dramatic improvements. What I did do was replace every item of food in my house with an organic version, began doing whole body cleanses every six months and stopped drinking or using tap water. I have a filtration system on my house water supply. These simple changes made all the difference. I accomplished this change by eliminating all the toxins, chemicals, additional hormones, nitrates, nitrites, preservatives and genetically modified foods (GMO's) from my diet and the cleanses cleared what had collected over the years in my organs, intestines and colon. It took a few months to realize a difference but today I have the energy I had as a teenager, my stomach issues disappeared and I no longer have any bowel issues. Not to mention my cholesterol and BP numbers are normal. The only things I haven't found organic are Velveeta cheese and certain snack items, but my fridge, pantry and freezer are stocked up with all the things yours would have, only mine are cleaner and purer with as much as 70% less ingredients listed on the package, all of which are pronounceable and make sense to be there. My food isn't a perfect color or bright and shiny. My stuff varies in size and color and looks like it just got dug up or picked, just as nature intended, as if you grew it yourself. I was studying labels and ingredient lists since we got the internet so it was just a matter of time for me to finally go here. Today, I would never consider going back. Over a lifetime, eating conventional foods that are chock full of those toxic chemical materials will make you sick and cause you to develope many of the diseases that plague our society. These things get into your organs, blood and cells. It's no wonder we have such a problem with various cancers, heart disease and stroke, anemias, alzhiemers, gird, diabetes or even people just dropping dead that otherwise seemed fine. I'm not a medical professional but what I said makes sense to me. It just stands to reason that with all those bad things inside your body you will eventually have a malfunction or a mutation. But, don't take my word for it or accuse me of being a quack on a conspiracy theory trip. Be a better smart #$%$ and check it out for yourself. The internet is there, use it. Educate yourself and ask, "does what he said make sense by empiracle standards or am I being obstinate?" I can't see how elimating all those bad things from ones diet can't have a positive effect on ones health. It sure is obvious to me that it works the other way around.

I could have claimed CFS because I was tired all my life. Then a doctor took a closer look at my thyroid. There was my problem, low thyroid, high TSH4. Simple, but overlooked for 30 years.

So what if it CFS is depression? Depression is as real as any virus! Mental reactions are just as real as physical ones. I think Melatonin helps me sleep. This sleep reaction may be all in my head, but it works, The sleep is real. Why would I want to pin this reaction to a "material" cause? Why bother?

This condition is caused by the pharmasutical industry and doctors ignorance and greed.
Quinolone and fluoroquinolone antibiotics cause Chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia and gulf war syndrome. I know because I am a victim. Fluoroquinolones are the most widley prescribed antibiotocs in the world. Chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia are not commonly diagnosed as a reaction to antibiotics because the reaction can occur up to two months after discountinuing the drug. Something few docotors acknowledge. If you have Chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia, check your medical history to see if you have taken a fluoroquinlone antibiotic. There is a FQ victim support group on Facebook with over 1600 people and growing daily. The truth will be told!

If Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is anything, it is a symptom of environmental poisoning. We are subjected directly and indirectly to SO MANY chemicals, hormones, etc, on a daily basis that it is likely impossible to understand the effects they might be causing us.
