Study suggests U.S. box office not affected by BitTorrent

Online piracy may not be as bad as Hollywood would like you to believe. A new study titled, “Reel Piracy: The Effect of Online Film Piracy on International Box Office Sales,” conducted by Brett Danaher, from the Department of Economics at Wellesley College, and Joel Waldfogel from the Department of Economics at University of Missouri, suggests little, if any, loss of revenue on U.S. box office sales after the release of BitTorrent. More importantly, while piracy is exhibited to have a direct correlation to a loss of revenue in the international box offices, decreasing the release window would be sufficient enough to curtail losses.

An international movie release following its U.S. debut is wrought with technical difficulties that contribute to a wide release window. The expensive cost of the 35mm film print (a 110 year old technology) for distribution to movie theaters, both domestic and international, typically consumes 3.5 percent of a film’s budget. In an effort to cut costs, it’s common practice for distributors to reuse film from theater to theater, thereby exacerbating the time between releases. But recently, theaters have been slowly transitioning from film to digital projection systems.

The study underlines three other key problems for movie studios:

    1. There is a shortage of international theaters.

    2. The complexity of organizing promotional appearances for the film’s actors adds to the delay.

    3. Action and science fiction genres exhibit the highest supply of online pirated movies.

What shouldn’t come as a surprise from the aforementioned complications is that the restlessness of international fans, waiting weeks or months for a film’s release, is often assuaged by watching pirated material. But what needs to be highlighted from the study is its evidence supporting the notion that, generally, consumers, both domestic and international, will favor theaters over illegal distribution channels.

“Consumers in the US who would choose between the box office and piracy choose the box office (and the remaining US pirates had valuations lower than the ticket price) but that international consumers who would consider both options choose piracy due to a lack of legal availability,” wrote the researchers. “If piracy displaced box office sales in the US, we would have expected the slope of the returns profile to shift more significantly as BitTorrent became more widely adopted.”

In other words, researchers were unable to discern an irregular drop in returns of domestic box office sales, which could fault BitTorrent as the culprit.

Despite the mounting evidence and studies providing evidence to the needlessness of the movie studios’ assault against file-sharing services, their attacks have been intensifying. At the end of the day, these results suggest that, while directing the blame at file-sharing services induces the fear of prosecution among other file-sharing competitors, much of the power to curb piracy remains in the hands of the studios.

They can Reduce piracy by Reducing their ticket prices to a reasonable price. $10 dollar non 3d movie before 4pm is ridiculous.
      • anon 3 mths ago
#$%$ where do you live, I'd love to see prices that cheap, haven't seen a $10 movie in... a long #$%$ time.

WOW, you guys are being ripped off bigtime. Here in the philippines, 10$=450 pesos, and we actually just pay 140 pesos to see a movie. 500 pesos (around 12$)= IMAX version of the film. So.. yeah, i feel bad for you guys. And here i am thinking that if your fellow americans created the film, they should let you guys see it cheaper.

I paid $4 for a movie yesterday afternoon...it sucked so bad I felt pirated!

They have been lying from the very day they existed. Lied about tape recorders, VCR's, CD & DVD recorders and so on down the line. Claiming a loss of sale with every download is one of the biggest and most absurd of them all. Nothing personal, just wanting to play Mafia.

Hollywood just needs to make someone the fall guy because they are incompetent.

They truly don't know that the reason no one goes to theaters is that the movies they make suck out loud. They want to catch you downloading a possibly good movie so they can make you pay for not going to see the utter garbage they make, making up for the loss.

Movies are too expensive to find out that the 2min you see in the trailer was the only 2min in the movie worth seeing.

BTDT hundreds of times...fortunately I wait for that 'Aha Experience' on my already over-priced cable TV. Mostly, it doesn't happen in a movie theater. Gotta be careful though. One of the worst movies I ever saw in a theater (David Hemmings' "Blow up" 1966) was beyond awful, until it gelled in the last few minutes. Then, I thought it was really great.

You know what affects the boxoffice? Their crappy movies. Remeber "New Years"? No compelling story, no plot, nothing just alot of celebrities what garbage.

I can honestly tell you that filesharing isn't the downfall of their sales. It's like previewing the movie before you go see it, if it's good, you'll pay to see it in a higher quality, be it in the theatre or on blu-ray. I know I have stopped buying movies altogether after the big squeeze on file sharing, just 'cause most of what they make is trash and I can wait 'till it hits t.v. to watch, or more accurately, not watch it.

what this study really did was reveal yet again how out of touch our mega media corps are and politicians and how they love to lie and deceive all in the name of GREED.
    • Mega  •  Moscow, Russia  •  3 mths ago
What is alarming is that the big business has the ability to influence, by lobby and "legalized bribery", the laws by which we are governed. No single entity should have such power.
      • Red 3 mths ago
Yeah Mega, my first thought was that due to some knee jerk reaction prompted by somebody wealthy/powerful realizing that he/she wasn't grabbing up every possible nickel, we end up with SOPA/PIPA and extreme censorship??? That IS insane. And, with all this and the recent NDAA, the sheeple are still out in the pasture chewing the cud laid out for them by the plutocrats/corporatocracy. If the FF were out and about, they would have been in open revolt long ago. That's what the 2nd Amendment was about along with the phrase about fighting enemies--foreign or DOMESTIC. Those ancestors didn't fight off tyrants 3000 miles away, only to trade them in for tyrants in our midst.

What production companies dont understand is that the same people who pirate movies are the same people who would have never bought it anyway. Even if you stpped online piracy, it will not see an increase in sales.
      • Liberal Zombie 3 mths ago
And, in many cases, the same people who download are the same people who purchase the movies on DVD/Blu-Ray if the movies are worth purchasing.
      • Red 3 mths ago
Maybe Creeper...the forces of (corporate and govt) repression can't shut down 100% of the piracy, but they can quash maybe 90% of it--and ultimately they will do that very thing. I have no doubt Let's see how much the media moguls gain in profits, while we "little people" pay the tab in terms of engulfing censorship in order to enable flouting most of the pirates. I THINK Andrew is correct, but we'll just see. Then, you can answer the real question: "Was it all worth it?"
      • Liberal Zombie 3 mths ago
If they censor the internet, there are other reasons behind it other than piracy. Piracy can be stopped without censoring. I think the same people who b i t c h about it, do it as well. I'm sure lots movie stars and musicians "pirate." I also think many of our elected officials/politicians and their children do as well. The industry needs to accept the change, just like with radio. How is this any different than recording a song off the radio, other than we don't have to wait for what we want to come on, we just go and look for what we want? They complained about that too, but ultimately they did nothing to us. They did however produce blank tapes for people to use to do just that. Same thing now. Sony, among others, sell CDRs and DVDRs, as well as the equipment that allows us to copy and record. If anything, they are making MORE money because of it. They are mad because people who are not in the industry are making money off their file-sharing sites. It's all a big fuss over nothing really. And to answer your question, "Was it all worth it?" Yes. If they censor the internet it is not going to be because of "piracy." They have already proved they can shut down #$%$ near any site they want without any internet bills being passed. They may use "piracy" as an excuse to censor, but that will not be the real reason.

PSHEW! Can't tell you how relieved I am... I spent many a night wondering if the hollywood studios needed more millions of dollars... clear conscience, you can all continue to steal their crap.
    • LastTrueConservative  •  3 mths ago
But if this is true, the entertainment industry won't be able to make huge tax deductions for "lost revenues" due to piracy. Another dirty secret is that many of the entertainment companies are selling "pirated" copies in order to get in on that "lost" money. But again, if people new that they'd lose their deductions.

Surprise, surprise. They said it about blank cassettes in the 70's (before they bought up the .tape manufacturers). Then they cried wolf about VHS, CDR/DVDR and now bits in the box. They'll never admit that their race-to-the-bottom commonality is what killed off the musical golden goose and turned their (still profitable) film business into an artistically sclerotic shell of its former self.

I do however think movies are a bit different than music and have something else going for them: People want to get out of the house, sit in a movie theater, eat overpriced snacks and put their arm around someone in the dark.

I would rather watch TV shows than any movie. Better stories, plot, and character development. Best shows recently are The Walking Dead, Justified, True Blood, Shameless, and of course the magnificent "Breaking Bad".
    • Medwardl  •  Syracuse, New York  •  3 mths ago
A lot of people I know that download movies wouldn't pay money to see them even if they couldn't download them for free. The people I know that do it often find most of the movies they watch aren't worth paying anything to see them because they are so bad. Not even B movie bad where you can at least get a good laugh in but so bad they feel they should of been paid to watch it for the loss of their time.

I would rather go to the movies than watch a cam any day so I agree this this.

What? Not losing money because of P2P? You mean the $0 amount of dollars I would have spent if I could not file-share isn't costing them $0? What is going on here? All this time I thought they were losing money from me even though I wasn't buying any of their over-hyped, over-expensive crap!
