Study: Triple threat paints grim future for frogs

WASHINGTON (AP) โ€” Frogs, salamanders and other amphibians may eventually have no haven left on the globe because of a triple threat of worsening scourges, a new study predicts.

Scientists have long known that amphibians are under attack from a killer fungus, climate change and shrinking habitat. In the study appearing online Wednesday in the journal Nature, computer models project that in about 70 years those three threats will spread, leaving no part of the world immune from one of the problems.

Frogs seem to have the most worrisome outlook, said study lead author Christian Hof of the Biodiversity and Climate Research Center in Frankfurt.

Meanwhile, federal scientists in the United States are meeting in St. Louis, Missouri, this week to monitor the situation and figure out how to reverse it.

Several important U.S. amphibian species โ€” boreal toads in the U.S. Rocky Mountains and the mountain yellow legged frog in the Sierra Nevada Mountains โ€” are shrinking in numbers, said zoologist Steve Corn, who is part of the U.S. Geological Survey's Amphibian Research and Monitoring Initiative. The western part of the United States has the problem worse than does the East.

About one-third of the world's amphibian species are known to be threatened with extinction, and 159 species already have disappeared, a 2008 international study found.

"It's no fun being a frog," said prominent biodiversity conservationist Stuart Pimm of Duke University, who was not part of Hof's study or the USGS effort. "They are getting it from all three different factors."

Hof's study was the first to look at projections of the three threats by geography and see if they overlap. While they overlap some, it is not nearly as much as expected. The wide distribution of threats leaves no refuge for amphibians.

The strongest threats seem to be where the most species of amphibians live, concentrating the potential loss of diversity, said Hof and Ross Alford, an amphibian expert at James Cook University in Australia, who was not part of the research.

The biggest threats are seen, mostly from climate change, to frogs and other amphibians in tropical Africa, northern South America and the Andes Mountains, areas which Hof calls "climate losers." In the northern Andes, which have the largest number of frog species in the world, more than 160 frog species are at risk, he said.

Alford and other outside scientists said they thought Hof's work might be overly pessimistic. But studying the geographic distribution of amphibian threats in the future is important, they said.

In the mid sixties we used to see hundreds of frogs in the inlets along the Boise River in Idaho.
Even in the irrigated farmland there were thousands of leopard frogs. We would wade in the inlets and feel hundreds of tadpoles bouncing off of our legs. I havent seen a leopard frog since the late 70s. The climate hasnt changed here much but I think pesticides and over fertilizing which creates oxygen choking algae growth are probably the cause. Plus many people are building homes along the rivers in the flood plane (Very Stupid) but these subdivisions have HOAs that have covenants on weeds so the home owners use herbacides and other chemicals that get washed into the rivers.

as i am sure you know , there is alot more th the threat against these animals, its just man and men sould be vanquished.

it has alot to do with herbacides check out what roundup does to developing frogs and they sold round up as safe scares me to think what the other herbacides will do

Climate change? The warmest year on record for Idaho (and nine surrounding and contiguous states) from WA and OR to NE and KS was 77 years ago in 1934. All "out West".

Frogs are very important in keeping insect populations under control. When the "Spring Peepers" in my ponds nearly fanished I researched and found that the Round-Up herbicide had a surfactant that drained from my fields into my ponds and killed the eggs. I have since stopped using any chemicals and switched to organic farming. The frogs are back in my ponds!

When we moved to our place in 1991 I would go to sleep listening to the spring peepers in the pond several hundred feet away. A wonderful sound. If it was warm enough I would open the window so I could hear them better. As the years went by the sound of the spring peepers became less and less and became no more several years ago. I love to feed the birds in the winter. Most species no longer show up and the ones that do are fewer in numbers. I don't have an answer why, but know something is behind it. I forgot the lightning bugs. We use to have so many they would light up the front yard. They too are gone.

all those lovely Chemicals put on lawns, roadside sprays, salt ect.... runoff into wetlands and ponds causing an unhealthy environment for Amphibians. I count frogs each spring and they are definately on the decline

I'm 24... So basically my grand-kids will have no OIL, no clean water unless they buy it bottled, no lightning bugs to catch at night, no clean lakes and streams to play in and no frogs to run after..

They will have plenty of problems to solve though.... they are going to hate us...

Resarch Malthus. You Doom & Gloomers have been around for eons and yet life on Earth is better now than ever. Maybe you aren't so smart.

        Ryan...everybody already hates you.

Steve - we are enjoying the highest standard of living than ever before. But the Earth's systems themselves are seriously degraded. And guess what? We are an organism wholly reliant on the Earth's systems. We can continue to stick our heads in the sand, but the tide is rolling in.

This is huge and no joke... I live in MN and remember when I was young the frogs would sing so loud at night it was almost deafening... I have noticed for many years now that instead of being a regular occurrence it has become rare to hear... and when you do you stop to listen... frogs eat a large amount of insects... this cant be good for the ecosystem...

I love froggies! I think they're cute! They were my best childhood friend when I was a child... :)

This really does suck though... and the Monarch Butter flies that use to fill the sky in the summer are all gone now too... at least where I live... it is rare to see them here any more!

Frogs and other amphibians are very ancient creatures, first showing up about 300 million years ago. It bodes very ill for our planet that they are on the threshold of extinction.

The BEST things since sliced bread! Let's wrecklessly plunder and destroy the very atmosphere, planet, air and water we NEED to survive (as does the plant and life based food we ALSO need) ALL in the name of technology, progress and wreckless consumerism...

...Humanity...the DUMBEST species on earth...clearly proven by the CURRENT condition of most anything in regards to humanity AND the EXACT current condition of this planet and surrounding atmosphere.

That's okay....nature and space can only withstand so much blatant abuse before they will yet AGAIN clearly show humanity WHO is in charge....and it will be WELL deserved.

sorry to remove the veil over your eyes young people but the cause of their decline is due to toxic pollutants that are being "put" into the water, sprayed from the air ,and unfortunately being lied about as far as the actual decline is concerned.these stories are a form of operant conditioning(psychological term for brainwashing) in an attempt to get you to except a carbon tax that only benefits large corporations ,and carbon tax thieves like al gore.notice you don't hear from Mr. Al Gore much anymore.that is because his Global Warming scheme blew up in his face, with the release of the emails detailing how they deliberately fudged the numbers to get what they wanted. Notice now the new Climate change agenda. no difference.yes some of these animals are declining but not from climate change only greedy corporations and those who pollute the planet for gain KNOW YOUR REAL ENEMIES. the global banking elite and the companies they own

The perfect lawns that HOAs require by covenants are causing the overuse of chemicals on homeowners lawns. These chemicals are washed into the storm drains and eventually reach the rivers or ground water. Bye Bye frogs I will miss you?

this past month black rhinos ceased to exist in the wild - so long bin good to know ya.
    • Eric1  •  6 mths ago
And DESPITE the MANY idiot comments here, one thing SHOUD be remembered; frogs and amphibians in general, simply by the nature of their SKINS, are the 'canary in the coal mine.' When THEY start dying, it won't be long before WE start dying. Frankly, there are a LOT of us that I won't miss at all, and GOOD RIDDANCE to them. But in my nature as a 'humanitarian,' I am obligated to attempt to 'raise consciousness' of the upcoming peril, no matter WHO actually survives...... but REALLY, I hope a LOT of you won't listen at all, and follow the frogs into that 'long good-night!' SERVES ya RIGHT ya stupid DOLTS!
