Stun gun found in Boston-to-NJ jet after arrival

NEWARK, New Jersey (AP) — A cellphone-size stun gun found aboard a JetBlue plane arriving from Boston did not appear intended to be used in an attack, authorities said Monday.

Authorities would not identify the passenger assigned to the seat where the device was found in a seat-back pocket, but Bryan Travers, a spokesman for the FBI's Newark office, said it wasn't a law enforcement official. Federal air marshals don't carry the devices, he added.

The FBI's office in Boston is leading the investigation into how the stun gun got onto the plane, which departed from Boston's Logan Airport. The airport was among those used by the Sept. 11, 2001, hijackers, who smuggled box cutters onto flights.

The stun gun was found by a crew that was cleaning Flight 1179 around 10:20 p.m. Friday, after the flight had landed at Newark Liberty International Airport. All 96 passengers were off the plane. Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police removed the stun gun from the plane and handed it over to the federal Transportation Security Administration, which is responsible for screening passengers.

A police report said the cleaning crew had found a black stun gun in a black case resembling a cellphone, Port Authority spokesman Steve Coleman said. There were no indications it had been fired.

Stun guns marketed for personal protection or shaped like cellphones are readily available online. There are also larger sizes, often shaped like pistols, that are increasingly being used by police departments across the country. Some organizations strongly oppose them, fearful they can be abused without clear guidelines.

The device, which usually works by firing wired barbs that stick into a person's body and deliver a powerful and immobilizing shock, are governed by restrictions in many states, including New Jersey and Massachusetts.

Authorities didn't say whether the stun gun found on the JetBlue flight looked like a cellphone or was just the size and weight of one.

Security expert Bruce Schneier said items sometimes slip through security, and it's unlikely the breach was intentional. He said the media's reporting on each item that makes it through security, despite the large percentage of the items that are detected and confiscated on a daily basis, is what alarms the public.

"The big picture is, airports are safe, this is all security theater," he said. "Airport security doesn't have to be perfect to be good enough; perfect is too expensive."

Others worry how a weapon banned or restricted in many states could make it onto a plane when restrictions have been tightened so that more innocuous items are banned.

Greg Comcowich, a spokesman for the FBI's Boston office, declined to give details of the ongoing investigation.

WHY IS IT AGAINST THE LAW TO THREATEN THE PRESIDENT BUT NOT FOR CONGRESS AND THE PRESIDENT TO THREATEN AMERICAN CITIZENS
      • TS 10 mths ago
Because American citizens actually have the power to eliminate the morons in government. Just need enough citizens to recognize the reality.

....and the gov't is going to run health care
      • Nurse1 10 mths ago
Countries with Gov run health care have infant mortality rate and longer life expectancy. FACT. Go back to believing FOX news now. Insurance companies make money by NOT paying. Do you think they have compassion towards you when you are sick? Yeah right.
      • Tyler 10 mths ago
Medicare (ie OBAMA GOVERNMENT) denies more health care procedures as a percentage of total claims than ANY private health insurance company in the US.

Last year I was coming back from a cruise and had a flight out of LAX. After I got scanned, I was called over because my backpack contained something suspicious. They took me and the backpack over to a table where the TSA agent informed me that a wooden turtle that I had wrapped in paper was cause of suspicion because it was very dense. Understandable. After wrapping the turtle back up, he gave me my backpack and sent me on my way. A few minutes later while waiting for the plane, I went through my backpack and found a 4" folding knife that I had accidentally left in there while hiking in Mexico. So ... this TSA agent was suspicious about my turtle, but completely missed a 4" knife? How did the X-ray attendant not see it? How did the agent who searched my backpack not see it? Probably because the really don't care that much about their jobs and would rather be somewhere else.

or maybe because they reall want to see if there was something in there they could steal.
      • Bb 10 mths ago
I'm curious ... what did you do with the knife once you realized you accidentally had it in your backpack? You left that part of the story out.

TSA didn't find the stun gun because it wasn't carried on board by a 6 year old boy or a 90 year old granny in a wheelchair.

TSA lets you by with knives, stun guns, etc. Try getting by them with a tube of toothpaste and you will be subjected to a cavity search (no pun intended).

TSA employees were stunned by the find.
      • Vegas-Dave 10 mths ago
They were also shocked at how easily it was smuggled on board.

"People get caught bringing things TO the checkpoint all the time." Obviously they brought it THROUGH the checkpoint and the GED patrol of TSA agents were too busy frisking some old lady.

If you were in charge, then I would know exactly how to get a bomb on a plane.

I know a TSA agent who tells people he works at Burger King, just to get more respect.

The TSA crap isn't about safety. It isn't about saving money either, obviously. It is about creating a second police force and getting the citizenry used to allowing them to grope them, stop them, pat them down, question them, etc. And it's a real time real world study about how the American people traded their illusion of safety for a loss of fredom and gained nothing in return .
    • Disco Vega  •  10 mths ago
Those who give up their security for safety, deserve neither.
The TSA is joke, and all you sheaple are giving up your liberty for this sham.
If you think for one second you are safe because of the TSA, you are a fool.

Must have been smuggled in a baby's diaper...Oh yeah, that couldn't happen because that's the only thing the TSA morons ARE checking!

Give everyone a barbecue pork sandwich to eat while they are waiting at the gate. Don't eat don't fly.
    • .  •  10 mths ago
Remember: radiation exposure and aggressive groping are a small price to pay for the illusion of security.
    • Pat S.  •  10 mths ago
Let me guess, some 95 year old woman had it hidden in her adult diapers - or was it surgically implanted inside a child?
    • Todd  •  10 mths ago
The only thing the gestapo TSA are good for is sexually assaulting children and old ladies. They can't even do what they are paid to do.
TSA=FAIL!!!! Get rid of this felonious agency.
    • AngryYoungMan  •  10 mths ago
We're letting them examine our genitalia now, and they still can't find something as large as a stungun? I'll tell you why... Flown lately? Did that TSA agent who molested you look familiar? That's because you probably saw him/her working at the Wendy's drive thru last week. These people largely have the mentality of a bag of Dorito's and have been given more rights to invade our privacy than the FBI. <--- The FBI has to get a signed warrant to search a KNOWN TERRORIST'S pockets, but these flunkies are allowed to fondle the junk of any law abiding citizen they want on their way to see grandma? %$$!!
    • TS  •  10 mths ago
Goes to show the TSA is another ineffective government agency. Bet the morons will continue to claim the TSA is making us safer.
The TSA needs to be ELIMINATED!! And, yes, I would feel safer taking my chances that there is a terrorist on board than to deal the the terrorists called TSA.
    • Douglas  •  10 mths ago
So... TSA stripped adult diapers off an 85 year old dying woman in a wheelchair and then a few weeks later let someone carrying a stun gun waltz through security. What's wrong with this picture?
    • ted  •  10 mths ago
Whoa....The Port Authority turned over the gun to the TSA? What are they going to do with it? Send it to their lab to be analyzed by a TSA scientist? We all know how intelligent TSA employees have to be to feel up kids and old ladies.

Unfortunately, TSA is not going away. Mr/Ms(?). Napolitano has been given too much power. He/she is the "hall safety monitor" of the United States and whatever process he/she implements is all for the sake of keeping the American people safe. Scary stuff! Within a couple years, they'll set up shop at train, subway and bus stations; schools; malls; libraries, street corners, etc. All to keep the American people safe. Remember with TSA, you're presumed guilty until they decide if you are innocent. Unless you are not an American citizen, then you're presumed innocent. We don't want to offend or appear to profile any particular religion or race.

Well it certainly didn't belong to my 4 year old daughter. They patted her down while 5 adults walked on through.
