Summary Box: Japan's Elpida files for bankruptcy

BANKRUPTCY: Computer chipmaker Elpida Memory Inc. filed for Japan's largest-ever manufacturing bankruptcy Monday after years of sliding chip prices, heavy competition from South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. and flooding in Thailand last year that stifled demand.

WHAT IT MADE: Elpida is the only manufacturer in Japan to specialize in DRAM chips used in mobile phones and computers.

WHAT IT OWES: Elpida reported debt of 448 billion yen, or $5.5 billion, in its bankruptcy filing.
