    Super Bowl Ads Make for Some Great Additional Competition

    COMMENTARY | By now it is no secret that when viewers tune in to watch the Super Bowl, they will be watching another competition along with the game on the field. The other competition is being waged by companies who are shelling out a lot of money to reach the mammoth audience that will be tuning in to the game. Forbes has reported that a 30-second spot of advertising during the Super Bowl sold for $3.5 million, and companies are not shelling out that kind of money to sit on the sidelines.

    Like a report from the Associated Press indicates, the commercial that has people talking Monday morning is the winner, but the commercial (and company or product) that keeps folks chatting through the year is the really big winner. Unlike the actual game, there can be more than one winner in the Super Bowl of commercials.

    The stakes are high for Super Bowl advertisers, but not just because of the hefty price tag. The ability to reach 111 million people, according to the AP report, is just too good to pass up. In addition, most folks will not be watching the game on a DVR, which means nobody is fast-forwarding through those expensive commercials.

    Sometimes the action off the field can be just as good as the football game, like Carolina Live reports, many of the best commercials of the year show up on Super Bowl Sunday, and some folks just watch for the advertisements. In fact, there might be some expensive players on the field, but there is a ton of cash on display during the breaks as well.

    So while football fans might be watching two teams battle for supremacy, companies are hoping to stay fresh in the minds of consumers for longer than the 30-second spot that cost millions of dollars. Finding out succeeded and who failed only adds to the fun of the game.
