    Super Bowl: Clarkson nails national anthem

    Well, if the Super Bowl is based on the intro music, the New England Patriots are the clear winners.

    Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train" — a hard-rockin' classic — blared out of the speakers at Indianapolis' Lucas Oil Stadium as the Patriots jogged onto the field.

    The New York Giants? They came out to Tinie Tempah's "Written in the Stars," which was played over and over and, ugh, over again during television commericals for baseball's playoffs.

    Husband-and-wife country stars Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert did a nice job with a sweet, low-key rendition of "America the Beautiful."

    And, there were no national anthem miscues at this Super Bowl — sorry, Christina Aguilera — by Kelly Clarkson, who nailed it.

    Imagine being New England defensive end Alex Silvestro.

    One day, you're on the Patriots' practice squad. The next, you're active for the Super Bowl against the New York Giants.

    Silvestro was promoted Saturday night when Bill Belichick decided to make the cruelest cut of all: releasing wide receiver Tiquan Underwood less than 24 hours before the big game. Whether Silvestro plays much remains to be seen — he was active for only one game this season — but he'll always be able to say he was there.

    Pretty cool for the rookie from Rutgers.

    Underwood's release means Chad Ochocinco is also active, set to play in his first Super Bowl in 11 NFL seasons after being inactive for the AFC championship game against the Baltimore Ravens. Tight end Rob Gronkowski, one of Tom Brady's favorite targets, will start despite two weeks of speculation over whether he'd be able to go with a high left ankle sprain.

    Inactive, though, is running back Kevin Faulk, who played in the Patriots' four previous Super Bowls under Belichick.

    It's time for football. Finally.

    After nearly two weeks of hype, predictions and over-analysis — Is Eli already elite? Will Rob Gronkowski's sprained ankle be OK? Where's Peyton playing next season? — the New England Patriots and New York Giants are close to kicking off the Super Bowl in Indianapolis.

    From all accounts, and there have been plenty, these teams appear to be pretty evenly matched. That has added to the buildup, with even President Barack Obama saying on Twitter that he's "looking forward to catching some of the big game." Yep, just like a few million other snacking fans watching from home right now.

    It's the fifth rematch in the big game's history. These teams played four years ago when the Giants pulled off a 17-14 victory in Arizona, ending the Patriots' perfect season thanks in large part to an elusive Eli Manning connecting with David Tyree, who pinned the football against his helmet for one of the most memorable plays in NFL history.

    Manning is trying to one-up big brother Peyton with his second Lombardi Trophy win, while Tom Brady and Bill Belichick are the first quarterback-head coach duo to play in the Super Bowl five times — with three wins.

      The Indianapolis Children's Choir deserves a hand too - they provided the 45 backup singers for Kelly Clarkson. Everybody did a great job!

      She 'showtimed' it. The anthem should be sung with respect, not arpeggios. The only pop star I ever heard sing the anthem the right way was Darius Rucker in Atlanta, prior to a World Series game. Leave the anthem to opera singers and military bands in the future.

        Check out the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in the 2002 Olympics on youtube. It was sung immediately after the damaged flag from the World Trade Center was carried into the stadium. That was a really good performance.

      Any performer who sings it with affected Southern diction and excessive embellishments second-guesses Mr. Key and makes the performance all about her. She should stick to the way the song was actually written. I'm glad I'm not the only person who didn't like her performance.

      I don't care much for the national anthem and all that other crap. I am a disable U.S. Army vet and I am black. I always hear those songs and see the opposite. There are still a ton of racism in America. Those songs and anthems would be good, if they werer true, My family have found in every war since the Civil War, but still never been treated fairly. I hate the glossing over the truth. Sadly, Everything still comes down to the color of one's skin.

        Brian, Most black men get called uncle tom, because they forget where they come from. Most of them like Herman Cain will defend white racist and won't step in to correct any wrong doing. If you are ashamed of being black you are a uncle tom. Most of those people do not relate to the average black person.

      If you mean she "nailed it to the cross," then you're right! She crucified it! She just HAD to dude it up with all these extra trills (notes) and just could NOT sing the melody the way it was written and the WAY IT WAS MEANT TO BE SUNG!!! She SUCKED! I had hope that she would do it right when I saw the children's choir behind her but she sang like they weren't even there and turned it into some POP CRAP like most of the anthem singers do! PLEASE let a military band PLAY the national anthem the way it was meant to be played!!! PLEASE!!!

      I admire the way Tom Coughlin stood with cap over heart and sang the national anthem. You don't see that much anymore. Noticed not many of his spearchukkers joined in. With the lying, half-breed, kenyan muslime swine in charge, it's hard to get excited about the national anthem.

      i cant stand the natinal anthem. the most boring thing ever. but if kelly clarkson is singing it, it might actully be nice. and this is coming from a hip hop fan like me but kelly clarkson is a good singer. im like josh howard. i dont listen to no natinal anthem. no im not black lol.

      Singing the National Anthem is a must at games, but it should be a requirement the preformer be able to actually sing the Anthem well. Sorry, but Clarkson did not do it well.
