'Super-Earth,' 1 of 50 Newfound Alien Planets, Could Potentially Support Life

This story was updated at 12:51 p.m. EDT.

More than 50 new alien planets — including one so-called super-Earth that could potentially support life — have been discovered by an exoplanet-hunting telescope from the European Southern Observatory (ESO).

The newfound haul of alien planets includes 16 super-Earths, which are potentially rocky worlds that are more massive than our planet. One in particular - called HD 85512 b - has captured astronomers' attention because it orbits at the edge of its star's habitable zone, suggesting conditions could be ripe to support life.

The exoplanet findings came from observations from the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher instrument, or HARPS. The HARPS spectrograph is part of ESO's 11.8-foot (3.6-meter) telescope at the La Silla Observatory in Chile. [Illustration and video of alien planet HD 85512 b]

“The harvest of discoveries from HARPS has exceeded all expectations and includes an exceptionally rich population of super-Earths and Neptune-type planets hosted by stars very similar to our sun," HARPS team leader Michel Mayor of the University of Geneva in Switzerland said in a statement. "And even better — the new results show that the pace of discovery is accelerating."

The potentially habitable super-Earth, officially called HD 85512 b, is estimated to be only 3.6 times more massive than Earth, and its parent star is located about 35 light-years away, making it relatively nearby. HD 85512 b was found to orbit at the edge of its star's habitable zone, which is a narrow region in which the distance is just right that liquid water could exist given the right conditions. "This is the lowest-mass confirmed planet discovered by the radial velocity method that potentially lies in the habitable zone of its star, and the second low-mass planet discovered by HARPS inside the habitable zone,” said exoplanet habitability expert Lisa Kaltenegger, of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Germany and Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Boston.

Further analysis of HD 85512 b and the other newfound exoplanets will be able to determine more about the potential existence of water on the surface.

"I think we're in for an incredibly exciting time," Kaltenegger told reporters in a briefing today (Sept. 12). "We're not just going out there to discover new continents — we're actually going out there to discover brand new worlds." [Infographic: Alien Planet HD 85512 b Holds Possibility of Life]

The HARPS spectrograph is designed to detect tiny radial velocity signals induced by planets as small as Earth if they orbit close to their star.

Astronomers used HARPS to observe 376 sunlike stars. By studying the properties of all the alien planets detected by HARPS so far, researchers found that approximately 40 percent of stars similar to the sun is host to at least one planet that is less massive than the gas giant Saturn.

In other words, approximately 40 percent of sunlike stars have at least one low-mass planet orbiting around it. On the other hand, the majority of alien planets with a mass similar to Neptune appear to be in systems with multiple planets, researchers said.

Astronomers have previously discovered 564 confirmed alien planets, with roughly 1,200 additional candidate worlds under investigation based on data from the Kepler space observatory, according to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

arghhhh,,it makes me think people really want to escape reality,,first we consume all of earths resources and take it for granted,, now we want to look for other planets to live on coz we're too lazy to make a step to help our OWN planet...technology for travel wont be for another 70 or so years, so yeah,,

Isn't moving to another planet a step to help our own?

we discover planets, but it is the planet resident's property. :)

we're not welcome to any other habitable planets, astronomers weren't sure about if that planet have other species or creatures living on it. so stop looking for other planets because planet earth is ours, we just need to take care of it.

Dude, sooner or later, our resources will get depleted and Earth will become an arid wasteland. We'll be taking care of it by moving to other planets. I'm not saying that we should abandon Earth completely. I'm just saying that many should migrate to other planets to make space.

ok.. its goof to know we can actually go somewhere

Why would they keep on searching for other habitable planet? hmmm...

something could already be inhabiting those planets... reminds me of alien movies .

the sun is bound to die in the far future ~ maybe they're just thinking ahead? ha3
it would be a fun thought though if other "alien" species will be abducted by humans in the near future (turn things the other way around for once) when we visit their planet for signs of life :)

what made people think they can just blast off and happily live on these new super-earths? new planet, new pathogens. for all we know those planets probably have airborne super-AIDS and mega-flu that our body's immune system isn't prepared for.

if we will have the same government on the new planet, then id rather stay here... i cant afford to lose some money for the travel expenses, unless it was proven we could enjoy life there.. for the mean time, Cheeseburger and fries will make my day.. =]

I am all for exploring these new planets. But we gotta clean up our acts here on earth before we go there. I would be dead before we reach that level of technology. But I wish to die knowing we achieved a way to fix our home, before visiting our neighbors. We are living in exciting times people.

We'd all be dead before we'd be able to transport the rest of the earth to one of these "Super-Earths". And most probably many people (Who actually would care about the Earth until that point) would do anything to sabotage the project because they'd be mad at these people for disregarding the Earth. Treating it like disposable material. Maybe some kind of technology would be invented before the earth takes it's toll, and we would have the ability to live. But what if the planets aren't habitable? What if they just LOOK habitable, what if their atmosphere did not comply with out needs? It would be a waste of a whole ton of money, lives, and work. It's a huge gamble to take. But either way, I am alright with the idea, as long as we clean up our own mess on our planet. But hopefully we'd be able to cleanse the Earth enough to be able to keep living it again and that travelling to another planet would be a last resort.

if that so will, it would be another one super earth to be superrr devastated by those irresponsible human being.

I am already tired of watching movies about our Planet Earth being invaded. Why not we make a massive invasion in their planet. We should be the aliens like in the movies Skyline, Battle at LA, and Transformers 3. Wouldn't it be cool?!?!?!? We should take their brains out and put them into our slave robots or turn those creatures into our slaves. And take all their resources. Then we say "We are your friends! We come in piece! Take us to your leader or die!"
