Super Smash Bros. is now the fastest-selling Wii U game of all time in the United States, selling 490,000 combined physical and digital units during the three-day November 21-23 period.

Mario Kart 8 was the previous fastest-selling Wii U game ever for the US. Super Smash Bros for Wii U sales are likely to continue later this month and into December, when the game is released across Europe, Australia, and Japan.

In a statement, Nintendo of America marketing executive Scott Moffitt said Nintendo's holiday season is already "off to a great start," though he cautioned that "there's a lot of work left to do." He also teased that Nintendo has "a few more surprises" in store for fans.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U predecessor Super Smash Bros. Brawl (2008) has sold more than 12 million copies worldwide to date. That figure is far higher than the Wii U's current global install base.
