When Action Comics issue No. 900 was released, what Superman had to say has lit a fire in the minds of conservative American reactionaries. The fictional character, not born on this planet, decides he will go in front of the United Nations and renounce his U.S. citizenship. That's right, Superman wants to become a world citizen.
Of course, this fictional action taken by a fictional superhero has the uber-nationalistic American conservative movement fit to be tied. Here's a look at some quotes found around the web.
ComicsAlliance.com has over 2,000 comments posted on its article covering Superman renouncing his citizenship. While there are a few based in reality, most are from people who take some things far too seriously.
"This is another move by the leftist indoctrinated public sector to disengage from the only country in the world that really gives a hoot about the rest of the world. While not much surprises me in the media these days, this really took me by surprise. If this goes unanswered and unopposed, I think we can say goodbye to the greatest country in the history of the world," reads one of the more coherent comments.
In a not surprising trend, many of the comments focus on President Obama, the "liberal media," and various incarnations of an imagined socialist takeover.
"The Birth Certificate is a Fake," and he's "just following in the footsteps of our current president (being an alien from another land pretending to be American then letting it go very easy cause he never had it," are two examples.
TheBlaze.com, the online site Glenn Beck started, has it's share of manufactured outrage too. Again, much of the phraseology used is right out of the right wing playbook.
"He does not recognize his country anymore. The real Superman would have this Administration in prison," says one. "The propaganda runs deep. The teacher's union should be abolished! They have raised a bunch of mindless, spineless, whiny fools that have no clue what it is to be an American," chimes another.
"The whole world is going insane including superman. So Superman is a socialist for social justice standing with the Taliban against America. That's the true meaning they mean to portray," offers someone.
The over 3,000 comments on The Huffington Post are more mixed, but conservative angst runs through many of them.
"One world government , one world monetary system, one world religion .. . what manner of man is this?" A reader asks. "The left won't stop until every vestige of American culture is destroyed," states another.
