Supernatural "Girls Girls Girls" Review: All in the Family

Supernatural S10E07: "Girls Girls Girls"

Welcome back to Season 10's main storyline, kids!

After a handful of open-and-shut cases, "Girls Girls Girls" reopened Supernatural's serialization box and introduced a new HBIC—Rowena—while sending rookie hunter Cole back home to his family with a warning from Dean that he's done with the saving and whatnot. That's not alarming or anything, considering the Mark of Cain is still on Dean's arm. He may no longer be a karaoke-loving demon with a poor taste in screen names, but he's far from feeling peachy keen, if his execution of Olivia-the-shapeshifting-maid last week is any indication.

The new details of the hunt that Dean and Cole's father embarked on way back when raise some interesting possibilities for later in the season. I find it hard to believe that this is the last we've seen of Cole, even though we still haven't seen Walt or Roy reappear, and Dean promised he'd end them when he was inevitably resurrected. What's different about Cole is that, after the first episode of the season, he was poised to be the latest thorn in the Winchesters' sides, and even learning the truth about his father from a mostly human Dean doesn't seem like a strong-enough kick to turn him off of this new hobby he's discovered. You can't just walk out of the life, even if you just recently wandered in. Hunting has a way of coming back, time and time again.

Also, Dean specifically said that he'd never seen the kind of monster Cole's father was—before or after that particular hunt—which means there are plenty of unknown variables surrounding Cole and his family. Is it a hereditary thing? Could Cole still manifest as whatever his father was? Could Cole's kid manifest as whatever Cole's father was? Does he have a whole mess of flesh-eating cousins somewhere just waiting for him to join the family proper? He'll be back.

OMG AND HOPEFULLY SO WILL HANNAH. Fed up with her dumb human feelings, Hannah ditched crushing on Cas for a desk job back in heaven and I am not okay, but at least all this vessel drama is bringing the Novak family back into the picture. Remember them? Of course you remember them. Castiel's adorkable holy tax accountant meat-suit didn't just drop out of the sky, you know. Jimmy seemed like an alright guy with a cute kid... a cute kid who Castiel possessed when he was in a pinch that one time. Given what we randomly learned about angels leaving grace behind in their vessels like some sort of glow-in-the-dark parting gift, something tells me the key to retrieving Castiel's true grace is gonna lie with Claire Novak and I am SO READY. What do you think Claire's up to these days? I'm hoping she's some sort of traumatized weird kid like Reggie on Dead Like Me.

I miss Dead Like Me.

Anyway, despite the bright neon title and ample lulz at Dean's expense, "Girls Girls Girls" returned us to Season 10's larger story while also continuing the big familial love fest that it's shaping up to be. We had angels angsting over the effect their possessions have on their vessels' families and we had Sam angsting over Dean and we had Cole angsting over his dead monster dad and we had Crowley angsting over his mother, the HWIC (Head Witch In Charge), and there's a definite sense of everything coming full circle. At its core, Supernatural has always been a series with a laser focus on families: blood, not-blood, normal ones, screwed-up ones, magical ones, and cannibal ones. "Girls Girls Girls" positioned itself as an episode about hookers—and yes, it was about hookers—but beneath that glossy veneer of cherry-flavored lube, it was also a direct attempt to set up the real meat of the season. After all, we're coming up on fall finale time!

And Hellatus. Boo Hellatus.
