Supreme Court Tells Virginia to Wait on Gay Marriages
The Supreme Court on Wednesday put a hold on gay marriages in Virginia while the state appeals a lower court's decision to strike down its ban last month.
The decision to stay the ruling until the fall is similar to the high court's response to a similar decision in Utah, and it sets up another high-profile round of hearings when the Supreme Court begins its new session in October. States that had barred same-sex marriages are grappling with a cascade of rulings in favor of gay rights following the Supreme Court's landmark decisions in 2013, in which it overturned California's ban on gay marriages along with the federal Defense of Marriage Act.
Both sides in the Virginia case have the Supreme Court to weigh in, the Washington Post reported, hoping that it will decide the fate of gay marriage once and for all.
