The Surprises of a Wikipedia Blackout

The Surprises of a Wikipedia Blackout

In the hours before the blackout hit, coders and bloggers alike scrambled and many succeeded in finding ways around the anti-censorship protests on sites like Wikipedia, Reddit and Wired. Now that everyone's had the chance to tinker with the sites, more details are emerging about the real effects of the blackout. Chief among them, because Wikipedia editors can't access the pages they need to update the English language site, Wikipedia's community has been silenced. Not only can you not easily read Wikipedia, editors can't write. This is going to make Thursday a very busy day for diehard Wikipedians.

"There's never been so little activity on English Wikipedia as far as editing -- there's a handful of admins who are handling that," Wikimedia's Jay Walsh told The Atlantic Wire. We asked for more specifics about how activity has slowed, expecting to hear that edits were down by some arbitrary percentage. But it was much more than that. "This is pretty wild," Walsh said, after clicking through to check the stats. "The only article that's been significantly changed is one of the SOPA articles. Normally we would be sending tens of thousands of edits over the course of a day on Wikipedia."  And while even Wikipedia doesn't know about all of the holes in the Javascript-powered firewall, they otherwise think it's pretty solid. "As you can imagine it's not a hack we want to use on a regular basis, [but] it's pretty well designed," Walsh concluded.

And here's a lesson: if even the Internet experts at Wikipedia didn't totally understand what would happen when they blacked out their site, how could a bunch of Members of Congress fully comprehend the technical implications of anti-piracy legislation?

Those playing around with Wikipedia's "hack" have found lots of ways around it if you're truly desperateWired's work around is self explanatory -- click the big red button marked "UNCENSOR THIS PAGE" -- while The Atlantic's Alexis Madrigal offers this Wikipedia workaroundThe New Yorker's Ben Greeman suggested, "If Wikipedia's only blocking English-language articles, can't you just go in through the German site and use Google to translate?" We gave it a try  and it works, but it's kind of horrible. Because Google Translate works in mysterious ways, the page we translated was muddled with Germenglish sentences. ("1934 Hemingway traveled to a big game safari in Kenya , by the big-game hunters, Baron Bror Blixen-Finecke of , the husband of Karen Blixen , and Philip Percival was directed.")

The SOPA blackout was meant to raise awareness about the anti-piracy bills currently pending in Congress. And based on the way that the topic has taken over the web today, it's succeeding. But the fascination with the many ways around the blackout itself is a reminder that the Internet is based on innovation and curiosity that's resistant to central control. Based on the surprise in Walsh's voice when he saw what was happening to his site for the first time on Wednesday morning -- it would appear that there's much more research to be done on the unanticipated consequences to anti-piracy legislation.

I heard a joke that was very fun: the government represents the people.

When dollars equal speech, only the rich have a voice.
      • SatanD 4 mths ago
We all have a vote and we can vote for whomever we want. If our government doesn't represent us, its our own #$%$ fault.
      • Kevin 4 mths ago
yeah not true satan. when politicians make empty promises and we're supposed to believe that those politicians are there to help us, is it our fault for electing someone we thought was out for our best interest, yet turned out to be a liar? run on sentence, ftw.
    • Dennis  •  Strongsville, Ohio  •  4 mths ago
The reason why our elected Representatives are so bold as to support SOPA and PIPA is because they have been bought and paid for by the same corporate interests as the ones in support of SOPA and PIPA. Our Representatives are confident in their smugness that Americans respond only after a dire crisis arises, and that has not occured as yet. Our Representative rest in comfort knowing that the U.S. does not use the guillotine in response to injustice.
      • Alienhideout 4 mths ago
If SOPA or something similar passes and becomes law people should just cancel their internet service. When the ISP's start losings billions due to protest cancellations things will change real quick.
      • alex 4 mths ago
no! the reason Congress want to do anything is to show who is the Boss.
      • asiseeit 4 mths ago
perhaps we should get a few guillotines ready and lined up in dc. it may give "our" politicians a second thought to change their minds about sopa and pipa! (and a few of their other choices like the ndaa or the new eea they want as law so they CAN detain us citizens for no reason AND take away our citizenship all at the same time!)
    • Todd  •  4 mths ago
A question: How is it that "the entertainment industry" can donate $370,000 to my Senator Bennett (D-CO) and yet as a citizen I'm limited to something like $2,200? The Supreme Court (wrongfully) made corporations people ... so why don't those "people" have to play by the same rules? Or do I have it wrong somehow?
      • Rse 4 mths ago
don't forget Speilberg, Hanks and the other Hollywood weirdos are giving millions to Obama's reelection.
      • Todd 4 mths ago
Fighting fire with fire - at this point it's the only way. At least until real citizens succeed in getting the Supreme Court's decision overturned. But that's going to take time - but it will happen. Otherwise our politics will stay totally upside down and potentially lead to some form of revolution. Oh right - then The Powerful can now pull-out the American military to "put down" a revolution - because G.W. and his henchman Chenney slipped that into an appropriations bill a few years ago.
      • Robert H 4 mths ago
Well, you can thank Bush for appointing the Supreme Court that allows Super PAC's to contribute all they want. I mean, BUY ELECTIONS.
    • J3551C4  •  4 mths ago
This: "...if even the Internet experts at Wikipedia didn't totally understand what would happen when they blacked out their site, how could a bunch of Members of Congress fully comprehend the technical implications of anti-piracy legislation?" I've been asking variants of this question since the beginning.
      • Chris 4 mths ago
I would hardly call anyone at Wikipedia an expert. Since when does a real encyclopedia allow anyone to edit and upload incorrect information and prevent that incorrect information from being corrected when it is politically slanted?
      • Nick 4 mths ago
Since Wiki allowed users to determine it's content after constant review and edits you jack ass.
      • T 4 mths ago
Chris, what are you talking about? Seriously. What is a "real" encyclopedia? And who are the "anyone(s)"?

Did YOU have a voice in selecting the folks who drafted whatever "real" encyclopedia you use that you 'believe' is reliable?

And please tell me what made the contributors in whom you believe non-politically slanted? What--besides your faith--ensures the correctness of the information in YOUR "real" encyclopedia.

And lastly, by what authority, experience, or ability do you question the expertise of Wikipedia techs? If you are able to conceptualize and execute an undertaking of such magnitude (as Wikipedia), then I'll listen to you when you insult lesser ones.

I don't expect answers from you...at least not coherent ones. But I'd love to hear what you have to say.

Remember, a site could be blacked out if a USER posted a link to copy writed material. So Yahoo would be shut down at once because spammers advertise knock off sports jerseys from companies in china in the comments section of sports articles!!
These laws are VERY, VERY poorly written and conceived!
      • Timothy 4 mths ago
I'd argue they're poorly worded and vague on purpose so companies can exercise control that benefits them at another's expense.
      • Mike 4 mths ago
kind of like the tax laws?
      • Anthony 4 mths ago
They are only poorly written if you presume the intended purpose and the stated purposes are the same. I would argue that they are not. The government is using piracy as an excuse to create a legal mechanism to control, limit or prohibit fast-moving freedom of expression.

All someone has to do it insert a link onto an anti-establishment site and that site is no longer available to anyone on the web. What better way to shut down those who oppose the government?

The internet is the fastest and most reliable way to expose abuse by government and law enforcement. That's why this legislation exists and why legislation is also being pushed to make it illegal to video law enforcement performing duties in the public interest while in the public eye.

Typical congress...trying to legislate something that they don't understand and trying to control the entire world when they can't even control their own excesses....Seriously, is anti-piracy the MOST IMPORTANT thing that congress needs to address? Please, give me a break.
    • wxman  •  4 mths ago
this is what will happen to many sites across the net if congress passes this corrup bill these congress people are pocketing big money from disney, viacom and cbs
    • Sue  •  Houston, Texas  •  4 mths ago
Large, litigious copyright holders such as the Motion Picture Association of America and the Recording Industry Association of America will issue floods of copyright violation accusations to everyone from Google to Fark. These middlemen can choose to investigate each claim and decide whether to comply with the blocking notice, but the lawyers upstairs will always recommend that when in doubt, block. The law would create a new class of gatekeepers who will effectively decide what can go online and what can not. It will coronate a corporate censor for the Internet.

Way to Go! Thanks to these sites the world is more aware.
How few would have known about sopa and pipa legislation if they hadn't done this? Congress may still pass laws regulating activity but with the added public opinion made aware by these actions it will be far less reaching.
    • Muad'Dib  •  4 mths ago
After our government denounces internet censorship in Iran and China, they introduce SOPA/PIPA to censor the internet here in America. Let us vote on this, and you'll quickly find out how The American People feel about internet censorship, and our freedom.

I saw a futuristic tv program once where the subversive article published on the internet was the US Constitution. Maybe someone needs to hunt that up and run it again. We can't let those in power determine what is acceptable.
    • Jenni  •  Colorado Springs, Colorado  •  4 mths ago
READ THE BILL. Unless of course you don't want to be allowed to post your comments HERE anymore. It will cost too much to police it and the comments sections on EVERY site will be shut down. Mark my words...
    • Dont Believe It  •  4 mths ago
Maybe someone should create an ET based internet as opposed to the current Terresterial based internet, just as was done with radio. Congress can regulate the "old terresterial" internet and the really open and free internet will be satellite and space-based without government meddling.
    • Lolly K  •  San Antonio, Texas  •  4 mths ago
I support Wikipedia and the other sites that had a black out today. Yes, you can get around them, but the point is to show people what it would be like if the laws passed. The constitution says "We the People in order to form a more perfect union...", but if those bills are passed we can forget the "We the People" part...it will be "We the Lobbiers with the money...." Just another case of the Golden Rule: He who has the gold makes the rules...

If you use Firefox and want Wiki ..just disable Javascript under content in tools. But before you do this - please contact your congressional representatives.
