Survey: 1 in 4 women attacked by intimate partner

ATLANTA (AP) — It's a startling number: 1 in 4 women surveyed by the government say they were violently attacked by their husbands or boyfriends.

Experts in domestic violence don't find it too surprising, although some aspects of the survey may have led to higher numbers than are sometimes reported.

Even so, a government official who oversaw the research called the results "astounding."

"It's the first time we've had this kind of estimate" on the prevalence of intimate partner violence, said Linda Degutis of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The survey, released by the CDC Wednesday, marks the beginning of a new annual project to look at how many women say they've been abused.

One expert called the new report's estimate on rape and attempted rape "extremely high" — with 1 in 5 women saying they were victims. About half of those cases involved intimate partners. No documentation was sought to verify the women's claims, which were made anonymously.

But advocates say the new rape numbers are plausible.

"It's a major problem that often is underestimated and overlooked," said Linda James, director of health for Futures Without Violence, a San Francisco-based organization that advocates against domestic abuse.

The CDC report is based on a randomized telephone survey of about 9,000 women and 7,400 men.

    Among the findings:

    — As many as 29 million women say they have suffered severe and frightening physical violence from a boyfriend, spouse or other intimate partner. That includes being choked, beaten, stabbed, shot, punched, slammed against something or hurt by hair-pulling.

    — That number grows to 36 million if slapping, pushing and shoving are counted.

    — Almost half of the women who reported rape or attempted rape said it happened when they were 17 or younger.

—As many as 1 in 3 women have experienced rape, physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetimes, compared to about 1 in 10 men.

—Both men and women who had been menaced or attacked in these ways reported more health problems. Female victims, in particular, had significantly higher rates of irritable bowel syndrome, asthma, frequent headaches and difficulty sleeping.

—Certain states seemed to have higher reports of sexual violence than others. Alaska, Oregon and Nevada were among the highest in rapes and attempted rapes of women, and Virginia and Tennessee were among the lowest.

Several of the CDC numbers are higher than those of other sources. For example, the CDC study suggests that 1.3 million women have suffered rape, attempted rape or had sex forced on them in the previous year. That statistic is more than seven times greater than what was reported by a Department of Justice household survey conducted last year.

The CDC rape numbers seem "extremely high," but there may be several reasons for the differences, including how the surveys were done, who chose to participate and how "rape" and other types of assault were defined or interpreted, said Shannan Catalano, a statistician with the Bureau of Justice Statistics.

"It is an evolving field, and everyone is striving to get a handle on what's the best estimate," Catalano said.

The CDC's numbers don't seem surprising to people who work with abused women.

"I think that the awareness is growing," said Kim Frndak, community educator for the Women's Rescue Center to End Domestic Violence, which operates a shelter on the outskirts of Atlanta.

"More and more people are really saying, 'Oh, this is something that we need to pay attention to as well,' because it's your sister, it's your mother, it's your daughter, it's your son, it's your brother. Someone in your own circle is being affected by domestic violence, and the effects can be devastating," she said.

This could be one among the reasons of many divorce, separation, and more crimes relating to gender issues. They were deprived from full knowledge about women's rights. There are more women than men that both sexes especially men are now allowed to marry each other and live as one like couples.

Really we have no choices .....anyway all the best to this kind of new sexual system inorder to avoid unnecessarily divorce, separation, molest, rape cases and sexual crime issues happening all over many places since the beginning of this world up to this present day.....this kind of story never ends.

I don't believe this. For example my former neighbor burned herself with a hot iron and then lied to the cops that her husband was responsible for her injury. Women lie and enjoy playing the victim, either to draw attention to themselves or to get back at someone

About four months ago we did a similar study with men concerning violence and abuse from women. Our study found that 100% of the men had been punched, kicked, slapped, pushed and berated by woman that they had an intimate relationship with. Additionally many said that this even happens with women they had no intimate relationship with. It strange that the government or the media never study men and abuse. Oh yeah I forgot men deserve it.

It is not surprising. It also happens to gay couples. It is always the younger who bullies the older. If older man prefers younger man or younger girls, and get abused, don't blame them, blame yourself.

Stay single then abuse will never happen. Why looking for trouble? We need inner peace. Love is short term and will give more suffering in long run.

What these women have in common is that they never learned how to keep their big traps shut. You know what to say to a woman with two black eyes? Nothing youve already told her twice.
      • G 5 mths ago
Hope they track u down and help yr partner who's walking around with probably more than 2 black eyes. If u get anywhere near me, i'd skewer yr eyeballs with my 5 inch heels. Lousy excuse for a man and human being.

The article or no comment picks up on this point.I,like many men will do nothing if I hear that a man is abusing my sister/female relative, unless it is right in front of me.When I tried to straighting the guy out,she jumped on my back, started fighting me and told me to leave him alone. Now,I am not welcome there to visit my sister and her kids. When they break up,it's another and then another abusive man. When she finds a decent man,it is over fast. She abuses him and cheats on him with an abusive man. They say they want "bad boys" today. Why should I risk killing the guy, going to jail and the 1st letter I get from a relative says she has simply found another abusive man?..This is just another "poor woman" article that does not tell the whole story.Like the prostitute articles.Oh,they are trafficed or evil men are taking advantage of them because of poverty.I saw an interview with a prostitute. They asked her if they gave her a job paying p12T a month would she take it.Millions of Filipinos would. She said no,she said she can make that in 4-10 days.I would bet more than half of them would tell you the same.I am sure lonely men try to "rescue" them. They wont go because they are not victims, they love it.A lot of them who are being "abused" love it,also.

That;s kinda what makes the world go 'round. Much of this is media sensationalism! And just who the hell came up with this 1-in-4 crap anyway? And just what do they mean by "attacked"?!? Go find another planet where everything is just 'peaches-'n-cream!!

If women were bigger and stronger than men, those numbers would be far worse.Women would be beating the $hit out of men.He does not talk enough. He does not keep me laughing and entertained. He does not give me constant attention. He does not make enough money.Even things like these would be grounds for brutal a$$ whippings.

Talk to the ladies in Bolivia and Peru. See if their abuse compares to that in the U.S. We cry foul at the drop of a hat.....or rather the news media does in order to creat news.

The actual statistics are 4.3 per 1000 females are the victims of violence at the hands of an intimate partner. Not news to claim that a phone survey done on 9000 females does not compute, more like something a tabloid should publish.

Setting my woman straight when she gets fresh mouthed, is nobody's business but my own. If you don't smack her in her fresh mouth, she might get ideas in that head of her's and then you will have to kick a mud hole in her butt. I am not saying you should kill your woman, but you should always remind her of her place.

ridiculous there are many women who attack men but we do not report it as there would be a stigma, how may women who claim attack actually are displaying wounds recieved from there partner defending themself

I was loading a dishwasher at work one time and a "little girl" coworker told me I was doing it wrong. I told her that the last time the dishwasher at home started to tell me what to do I told her to pack her bags and get out. Still with the same woman after 15 years.

Did you know that in one state they track ALL violent crimes against women as assults. So if a man robs a liquor store and the clerk is a women - it is a crime against women. doesn't matter if he hit her or not. Luck of the draw who your clerk is!
Stats ARE flawed and have AGENDAS. CDC makes this a medical disease - just like they said firearms are a medical disease. i suppose falling off ladders make ladders a disease...and let's not forget slipping in bathtubs!!

I'm not saying women are not attacked frequently, but 25% of all of them?

Gotta post it again. Again and again and again to combat the propaganda machine. It's disgusting, really. Regardless of your personal experiences, you have to know that when you perpetrate this ridiculous fantasy about how women suck, they deserve it, they walk all over men, there are ACTUAL WOMEN suffering under these ideas.
HERE ARE THE STATS FROM FBI.GOV
Expanded homicide data table by murder circumstances, 2010:
      Husband:110
      Wife:603
      Boyfriend:131
      Girlfriend:492

Keep looking around. The actual numbers are out there. Please protect the women in your life and otherwise. Know the facts.

OK, as a man i would say most everything that was posted in the article is TRUE, i work with men on the construction site all day long and the stories they tell me make me wanna vomit, ive herd them telling stories of the old college days of get them blind drunk and let all my friends have screw them, HA-HA so funny #$%$ bag. i here them talking about hitting their wife or cheating on them, the cheating i hear alot of, not sure about the ratio of who does to who doesn't, but I LOVE MY WIFE AND WOULD NEVER HURT HER OR CHEAT OR MISS TREAT HER, not all men are geared toward being faithful or responsible, and the same goes for a lot of women as iv had a bunch of them hit on me while looking at my wedding band, guess that's what makes us all different....
