Susan G. Komen and the Problem with Pink

Susan G. Komen and the Problem with Pink

Last night, in the fervor against Komen for cutting their Planned Parenthood funding (a decision now reversed), someone discovered a pink gun sold by Discount Gun Sales, which lead Scott Wooledge to quip at DailyKos, "Perfect for shooting yourself in the foot!" Might it also be good for killing off pink for good?

In 1991, the Susan G. Komen Foundation handed out pink ribbons, a riff on the red ribbon for AIDS awareness, to Race for the Cure participants in New York City. In the two decades that have followed, pink and breast cancer awareness have merged into a full-fledged branded commodity, with portions of sales of thousands of pink items far from simply ribbons offered by an array of merchandisers "to support the fight against breast cancer" (or, in some unfortunate cases, to simply appear that they do -- see update below).

According to the information posted on Discount Gun sales, a portion of each "Walther P-22 Hope Edition in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month" (the gun above) sold by Discount Gun Sales will be donated to the Seattle branch of Susan G. Komen, or, actually, "Susan B. Koman." They add:

Discount Gun Sales is proud to team up with the Susan B. Koman Foundation to offer the Walther P-22 Hope Edition in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A portion of each P-22 Hope Edition will be donated to the Seattle Branch of the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

The P-22 Hope Edition has an exclusive DuraCoat Pink slide in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness month. Utilizing the same reliable controls and firing mechanism that has made the Walther P-22 America’s top selling handgun, the Hope Edition will be a limited production pistol offered exclusively through Discount Gun Sales.

As Komen reverses track and apologizes to the American public for “recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women’s lives,” as CEO Nancy Brinker said, it will be interesting to see whether Komen can regain the confidence of those who, until recently, had supported their mission without question. And with darker questions lingering about what really happened (including apparent instructions from Komen Foundation officials to "obfuscate the issues when confronted with questions about why Komen cut off funding to Planned Parenthood") and how that might be related to pro-life activist and Susan G. Komen SVP Karen Handel, can we stomach the once seemingly innocent proliferation of "breast cancer awareness pink" -- which now appears on merchandise ranging from stickers, tote bags, T-shirts, lip balm, and sock monkeys to walkers, devotional Bibles for women, figurines, sunglasses, car charms, and muffin cups, not to mention guns -- at all?

Breast cancer screenings notwithstanding -- has Susan G. Komen killed pink (and thereby, a 20-year brand) in, essentially, a week's time? And if not, can we ever look at it the same way again?

Update: Discount Gun Sales has now removed the gun from the website. Andrea Rader at Susan G. Komen said via email, "this story about Komen and a handgun partnership is absolutely wrong...Komen does not partner with firearms manufacturers at the national level and our Seattle Affiliate has no record of receiving funds from this company. You’ll also note that Discount Guns took this off their website (and had our name wrong in any event – we are not the Susan B. Komen [or the Susan B. Koman] foundation)."

it may not have killed pink all together, but I'll surely never look at it the same way again...nor will I ever support it again - plenty of other breast cancer charities to support

Oh the irony of it all. They were cutting funding because they were pro-life yet here they are licensing a deal with a gun company to make pink guns. Guns really aren't what you could call a pro-life sort of object. By flip-flopping on their decisions whereby opening up their organization to closer scrutinization they've shot themselves in the foot and have potentially destroyed an organization by #$%$ off most all of the donors from all sides.
      • Steve D 3 mths ago
ask the roughly quarter of a million women annually in America alone that protect themselves with guns if they are a "pro-life sort of object". But then again most of the time they are only protecting themselves against rape or having crap beat out of them so i guess thats not a big deal huh? (was i a little heavy on the sarcasm on that last sentence)

Oh and the stats come from the gun unfriendly Obama DOJ.

you just reinforced my point of view...guns are not a pro-life sort of object. If a woman is being raped or beat and she shoots the guy with her gun....she is hoping that he doesn't live. Guns cause death a lot of the time...to humans and animals. They are certainly not creating life.

What pro-life hypocrites fail to realize is that breast cancer and abortion are TWO SEPARATE ISSUES. The funding that Komen gave to Planned Parenthood was used only for the former. Komen is in their right to cut funding for political purposes if they want, but myself and millions of other people now have the right to cut our funding to Komen for the same reason. There are plenty of other organizations dedicated to fighting breast cancer that don't confuse their primary purpose with political ideology, and those will be the ones that get my money.

So they have seperate accounts for breast cancer screening abd abortion NOT!!!
      • KaraW 3 mths ago
Actually, they DO have separate accounts.
      • Just_Looking2966 3 mths ago
Howard, do you have the slightest idea how accounting works? Even if all the PP money was in one bank account....the proportional funding of things occurs in the bookkeeping process...on paper.

For all I know they do have an actual separation of funds because of all the accounting and reporting procedures they have to follow.

Elephant...I like the post...but just had to mention that lately I've seen many pro-life people posting about how it's been "proven" that abortion causes breast cancer. What????? If there's any argument it's that birth control causes cancer. And I would have to believe that since breast cancer has no restrictions on who it affects...the coincidence that a person who gets breast cancer and also had an abortion that is just that ....a coincidence.

Although Komen's public statement was that the money would go toward helping poor women get mammograms, it didn't happen (at least not as of 2009, when Planned Parenthood performed over 200,000 abortions and zero mammograms); women who called PP to get free mammograms were referred to local mammogram providers, like hospitals and mobile units. Sadly, most of Komen's leaders are using donations made in good faith "for the cure" to further their own, personal, political agendas.
      • Just_Looking2966 3 mths ago
they were referred to other locations but those mammograms were paid for by PP
      • Just_Looking2966 3 mths ago
PP probably had arrangements with certain facilities to have those mammograms done at a lower cost because there would be many referrals.

People dont chose to get cancer. Komen by design is a much better Non Profit than most.

People act irresponsibly to get pregnant. Planned Parenthood, should be named Unplanned Parenthood.

Now that PP is getting millions how about a contract to Komen? Not a two way street............
      • KaraW 3 mths ago
How is using birth control and having it fail acting irresponsibly? If you did everything to prevent a pregnancy you couldn't afford/didn't want, what did you di wrong? Before you say anything, MANY women who receive abortions are married, not "sleeping around". They just have too many kids and can't afford any more.

It all boils down to the fact that American women are just no darned good anymore. Modern American women have become angry, shrill-voiced, nut-busting, clipped-hair, fat, lazy, pill popping, pant-suit/pajama pants wearing, credit card maxed, selfish, cat-hoarding, tv-addicted, spiteful-feminist, alcoholic spinsters bent on making life miserable for American men. They've traded their femininity for another serving of slop from the buffet table. American women should be corralled and treated like the live stock they've become. American women, despite angrily demanding full custody of children, cannot and do not want the responsibility of raising children. They leave the task to illegal women to raise the children. I tell you, American women are just no good anymore. Just think of those useless Obese Loads. Think about the tracks these animals leave in the bath tub, cuz they're to hefty for conventional toilets. Think about the debris stuck in the folds of their fat. Can we all say biohazard? And as these pink ladies show, dumb as stumps.

Planned Parenthood - Less than 10% of our business involves murder.

Looks like Komen lacks the courage of their conviction. Defunding planned parenthood is the right thing to do. Amazing how hard the liberals fight to kill children and save those on death row.

At some point in time the human body gets a soul, or to the non believers it becomes a human unto one's "SELF". When that moment happens NOBODY really knows! Nobody can know! Myself, I do not want to challenge that to see if I am killing a human or not! Do you?

When I saw the corporate headquarters I was amazed at how large it was! I truly wonder how much closer to the cure they might be if more money was put towards the cure and not supplying large offices and huge administration costs? My wife and I donate quite a bit to needy organizations but always look at the ADMIN costs (what is used to run the organization) so we know what % of our donation will actually go towards what we made it for in the first place. 2009 - 2010 the ADMIN costs of this charity was 11.3%. We do not give to a charity unless the ADMIN costs are 10% or below...an example would be MDA which comes in at 8% for 2010. I truly believe in the cause of this charity but they need to put more of the donations towards the cure and less towards administrative costs.

Aren't we all getting a little carried away here with the details... isn't it about the cause? Let's not make this look like it's all about the money like we already know it is.

When I donate monies to an organization, it's because I believe in their cause...... I don't expect them to dole monies to other organizations; especially those I do not support.
